Field sizes and the future of farmland biodiversity in European landscapes

Lower diversity of plant and animal farmland species are usually reported where cropland has been aggregated into larger fields, which raises prospects of curbing declines in European farmland biodiversity and associated ecosystem services by halting trends to field size increases associated to agricultural intensification, without having to set aside arable land for conservation. Here, we consider the factors underlying trade-offs between farmer income and biodiversity as mediated by field size at local and landscape scales, and how these trade-offs may be overcome. Field sizes are still increasing, facilitated by increasing farm sizes and land consolidation. Decreases in working time and fuel expenses when fields are larger, uptake of larger machinery and subsidies favoring larger farms provide incentives to manage land in larger units, putting farmland biodiversity further at risk. Yet, field size-mediated ecological-economic trade-offs are largely ignored in policy and research. We recommend internalizing the ecological effects of changes in landscape-scale field size into land consolidation scheme design, ensuring that EU Common Agricultural Policy post-2020 rewards farmers that maintain and recreate fine-grained landscapes where these are essential for farmland biodiversity targets, and reducing economic-ecological trade-offs by stimulating agricultural research and innovation for economically efficient yet biodiversity-friendly farming in fine-grained landscapes.

Invalid-Resource-Aware Spectrum Assignment for Advanced-Reservation Traffic in Elastic Optical Network

Elastic optical networks (EONs) can make service accommodation more flexible and precise by employing efficient routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) algorithms. In order to improve the efficiency of RSA algorithms, the advanced-reservation technique was introduced into designing RSA algorithms. However, few of these advanced-reservation-based RSA algorithms were focused on the unavailable spectrum resources in EONs. In this paper, we propose an Advanced-Reservation-based Invalid-Spectrum-Aware (AR-ISA) resource allocation algorithm to improve the networking performance and the resource alignment of EONs. By employing a new index, Invalid Spectrum Rate (ISR), to record the proportion of unavailable spectrum resources in EONs, the proposed AR-ISA algorithm set a network load threshold to trigger the postponement of an arriving service. Compared with the traditional slack-based AR mechanism, the proposed algorithm has more concerns about the current spectrum usage of the path designated by the service than the conflicts between AR services and other existing services. To further increase the networking performance, the proposed algorithm adopts defragmentation to increase the number of available spectrum resources when postponing a service. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed AR-ISA algorithm has obvious effectiveness in reducing the service blocking rate and increasing the spectrum alignment rate.

Targeting of Fumarate Hydratase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis Using Allosteric Inhibitors with a Dimeric-Binding Mode

With the growing worldwide prevalence of antibiotic-resistant strains of tuberculosis (TB), new targets are urgently required for the development of treatments with novel modes of action. Fumarate hydratase (fumarase), a vulnerable component of the citric acid cycle in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), is a metabolic target that could satisfy this unmet demand. A key challenge in the targeting of Mtb fumarase is its similarity to the human homolog, which shares an identical active site. A potential solution to this selectivity problem was previously found in a high-throughput screening hit that binds in a nonconserved allosteric site. In this work, a structure-activity relationship study was carried out with the determination of further structural biology on the lead series, affording derivatives with sub-micromolar inhibition. Further, the screening of this series against Mtb in vitro identified compounds with potent minimum inhibitory concentrations.

High-density characterization of a localized reentry circuit occurred after AF ablation

We present the case of a localized reentry circuit that developed 24 h after radiofrequency ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF). The circuit was of interest because it overlapped with sites of previous defragmentation during AF. The circuit presented a small funnel that measured only 1.4 mm at its narrowest segment. Fractionated signals, which codify for slow conduction zones, corresponded to the isthmus site. Ablation at this site interrupted the atrial tachycardia.
