Regulation of anion-Na+ coordination chemistry in electrolyte solvates for low-temperature sodium-ion batteries

High-performance sodium storage at low temperature is urgent with the increasingly stringent demand for energy storage systems. However, the aggravated capacity loss is induced by the sluggish interfacial kinetics, which originates from the interfacial Na+ desolvation. Herein, all-fluorinated anions with ultrahigh electron donicity, trifluoroacetate (TFA-), are introduced into the diglyme (G2)-based electrolyte for the anion-reinforced solvates in a wide temperature range. The unique solvation structure with TFA- anions and decreased G2 molecules occupying the inner sheath accelerates desolvation of Na+ to exhibit decreased desolvation energy from 4.16 to 3.49 kJ mol-1 and 24.74 to 16.55 kJ mol-1 beyond and below -20 °C, respectively, compared with that in 1.0 M NaPF6-G2. These enable the cell of Na||Na3V2(PO4)3 to deliver 60.2% of its room-temperature capacity and high capacity retention of 99.2% after 100 cycles at -40 °C. This work highlights regulation of solvation chemistry for highly stable sodium-ion batteries at low temperature.

The Intrinsic Radius as a Key Parameter in the Generalized Born Model to Adjust Protein-Protein Electrostatic Interaction

The generalized Born (GB) model is an extension of the continuum dielectric theory of Born solvation energy and is a powerful method for accelerating the molecular dynamic (MD) simulations of charged biological molecules in water. While the effective dielectric constant of water that varies as a function of the separation distance between solute molecules is incorporated into the GB model, adjustment of the parameters is indispensable for accurate calculation of the Coulomb (electrostatic) energy. One of the key parameters is the lower limit of the spatial integral of the energy density of the electric field around a charged atom, known as the intrinsic radius ρ. Although ad hoc adjustment of ρ has been conducted to improve the Coulombic (ionic) bond stability, the physical mechanism by which ρ affects the Coulomb energy remains unclear. Via energetic analysis of three differently sized systems, here, we clarify that the Coulomb bond stability increases with increasing ρ and that the increased stability is caused by the interaction energy term, not by the self-energy (desolvation energy) term, as was supposed previously. Our results suggest that the use of larger values for the intrinsic radii of hydrogen and oxygen atoms, together with the use of a relatively small value for the spatial integration cutoff in the GB model, can better reproduce the Coulombic attraction between protein molecules.

Critical Review on Low-Temperature Li-Ion/Metal Batteries

With the highest energy density ever among all sorts of commercialized rechargeable batteries, Li-ion batteries (LIBs) have stimulated an upsurge utilization in 3C devices, electric vehicles, and stationary energy-storage systems. However, a high performance of commercial LIBs based on ethylene carbonate electrolytes and graphite anodes can only be achieved at above -20 °C, which restricts their applications in harsh environments. Here, a comprehensive research progress and in-depth understanding of the critical factors leading to the poor low-temperature performance of LIBs is provided; the distinctive challenges on the anodes, electrolytes, cathodes, and electrolyte-electrodes interphases are sorted out, with a special focus on Li-ion transport mechanism therein. Finally, promising strategies and solutions for improving low-temperature performance are highlighted to maximize the working-temperature range of the next-generation high-energy Li-ion/metal batteries.

Sense and simplicity in HADDOCK scoring: Lessons from CASP-CAPRI round 1

Our information-driven docking approach HADDOCK is a consistent top predictor and scorer since the start of its participation in the CAPRI community-wide experiment. This sustained performance is due, in part, to its ability to integrate experimental data and/or bioinformatics information into the modelling process, and also to the overall robustness of the scoring function used to assess and rank the predictions. In the CASP-CAPRI Round 1 scoring experiment we successfully selected acceptable/medium quality models for 18/14 of the 25 targets - a top-ranking performance among all scorers. Considering that for only 20 targets acceptable models were generated by the community, our effective success rate reaches as high as 90% (18/20). This was achieved using the standard HADDOCK scoring function, which, thirteen years after its original publication, still consists of a simple linear combination of intermolecular van der Waals and Coulomb electrostatics energies and an empirically derived desolvation energy term. Despite its simplicity, this scoring function makes sense from a physico-chemical perspective, encoding key aspects of biomolecular recognition. In addition to its success in the scoring experiment, the HADDOCK server takes the first place in the server prediction category, with 16 successful predictions. Much like our scoring protocol, because of the limited time per target, the predictions relied mainly on either an ab initio center-of-mass and symmetry restrained protocol, or on a template-based approach whenever applicable. Higher Desolvation Energy Reduces Molecular Recognition in Multi-Drug Resistant HIV-1 Protease

Designing HIV-1 protease inhibitors that overcome drug-resistance is still a challenging task. In this study, four clinical isolates of multi-drug resistant HIV-1 proteases that exhibit resistance to all the US FDA-approved HIV-1 protease inhibitors and also reduce the substrate recognition ability were examined. A multi-drug resistant HIV-1 protease isolate, MDR 769, was co-crystallized with the p2/NC substrate and the mutated CA/p2 substrate, CA/p2 P1'F. Both substrates display different levels of molecular recognition by the wild-type and multi-drug resistant HIV-1 protease. From the crystal structures, only limited differences can be identified between the wild-type and multi-drug resistant protease. Therefore, a wild-type HIV-1 protease and four multi-drug resistant HIV-1 proteases in complex with the two peptides were modeled based on the crystal structures and examined during a 10 ns-molecular dynamics simulation. The simulation results reveal that the multi-drug resistant HIV-1 proteases require higher desolvation energy to form complexes with the peptides. This result suggests that the desolvation of the HIV-1 protease active site is an important step of protease-ligand complex formation as well as drug resistance. Therefore, desolvation energy could be considered as a parameter in the evaluation of future HIV-1 protease inhibitor candidates.
