Topology of WC/Co Interfaces in Cemented Carbides

WC-Co cemented carbides build one of the important classes of metal matrix composites. We show in this paper that the use of machine vision methods makes it possible to obtain sufficiently informative statistical data on the topology of the interfaces between tungsten carbide grains (WC) and a cobalt matrix (Co). For the first time, the outlines of the regions of the cobalt binder were chosen as a tool for describing the structure of cemented carbides. Numerical processing of micrographs of cross sections of three WC-Co alloys, which differ in the average grain size, was carried out. The distribution density of the angles in the contours of cobalt "lakes" is bimodal. The peaks close to 110° (so-called outcoming angles) correspond to the contacts between the cobalt binder and the WC/WC grain boundaries. The peaks close to 240° (or incoming angles) correspond to the WC "capes" contacting the cobalt "lakes" and are determined by the angles between facets of WC crystallites. The distribution density of the linear dimensions of the regions of the cobalt binder, approximated with ellipses, were also obtained. The distribution density exponentially decreases with the lengths of the semi-axes of the ellipsoid, approximating the area of the cobalt binder. The possible connection between the obtained data on the shape of cobalt areas and the crack trajectories in cemented carbides is discussed.

Faceting/Roughening of WC/Binder Interfaces in Cemented Carbides: A Review

Hardmetals (or cemented carbides) were invented a hundred years ago and became one of the most important materials in engineering. The unique conjunction of fracture toughness, abrasion resistance and hardness makes WC-Co cemented carbides irreplaceable for numerous applications. As a rule, the WC crystallites in the sintered WC-Co hardmetals are perfectly faceted and possess a truncated trigonal prism shape. However, the so-called faceting-roughening phase transition can force the flat (faceted) surfaces or interfaces to become curved. In this review, we analyze how different factors can influence the (faceted) shape of WC crystallites in the cemented carbides. Among these factors are the modification of fabrication parameters of usual WC-Co cemented carbides; alloying of conventional cobalt binder using various metals; alloying of cobalt binder using nitrides, borides, carbides, silicides, oxides; and substitution of cobalt with other binders, including high entropy alloys (HEAs). The faceting-roughening phase transition of WC/binder interfaces and its influence on the properties of cemented carbides is also discussed. In particular, the increase in the hardness and fracture toughness of cemented carbides correlates with transition of WC crystallites from a faceted to a rounded shape.

First-Principles Study of the Surfaces and Equilibrium Shape of Discharge Products in Li-Air Batteries

Li-air batteries are a promising alternative to Li-ion batteries as they theoretically provide the highest possible specific energy density. Mainly, Li₂O₂ (lithium peroxide) and to a lesser extent, Li₂O (lithium oxide) are assumed to be the discharge products of these batteries formed with the soluble LiO₂ (lithium superoxide) considered to be an intermediate product. Bulk Li₂O₂ is an electronic insulator, and the precipitation of this compound on the cathode is thought to be the main limiting factor in achieving high capacities in lithium-oxygen cells. For the most promising electrolytes including solvents with high donor numbers, microscopy observations frequently reveal crystallite morphologies of Li₂O₂ compounds, rather than uniform layers covering the electrode surface. The precise morphologies of Li₂O and Li₂O₂ particles, and their effect and their extent of contact with the electrode, which may all affect the capacity and rechargeability, however, remain largely undetermined. Here, we address the stability of various Li₂O and Li₂O₂ surfaces and consequently, their crystallite morphologies using density functional theory calculations and ab initio thermodynamics. In contrast to previous studies, we also consider high-index surface terminations, which exhibit surprisingly low surface energies. We carefully analyze the reasons for the stability of these high-index surfaces, which also prominently influence the equilibrium shape of the particles, at least for Li₂O₂, and discuss the consequences for the observed morphology of the reaction products.

Equilibrium shapes of a heterogeneous bubble in an electric field: a variational formulation and numerical verifications

The equilibrium shape of a bubble/droplet in an electric field is important for electrowetting over dielectrics (EWOD), electrohydrodynamic (EHD) enhancement for heat transfer and electro-deformation of a single biological cell among others. In this work, we develop a general variational formulation in account of electro-mechanical couplings. In the context of EHD, we identify the free energy functional and the associated energy minimization problem that determines the equilibrium shape of a bubble in an electric field. Based on this variational formulation, we implement a fixed mesh level-set gradient method for computing the equilibrium shapes. This numerical scheme is efficient and validated by comparing with analytical solutions at the absence of electric field and experimental results at the presence of electric field. We also present simulation results for zero gravity which will be useful for space applications. The variational formulation and numerical scheme are anticipated to have broad applications in areas of EWOD, EHD and electro-deformation in biomechanics.

Extended Superspheres for Shape Approximation of Near Polyhedral Nanoparticles and a Measure of the Degree of Polyhedrality

Crystalline nanoparticles or nanoprecipitates with a cubic structure often have near polyhedral shapes composed of low-index planes with {100}, {111} and {110}. To consider such near polyhedral shapes, algebraic formulas of extended superspheres that can express intermediate shapes between spheres and various polyhedra have been presented. Four extended superspheres, (i) {100} regular-hexahedral; (ii) {111} regular-octahedral (iii) {110} rhombic-dodecahedral and (iv) {100}-{111}-{110} rhombicuboctahedral superspheres are treated in this study. A measure ∏ to indicate the degree of polyhedrality is presented to discuss shape transitions of the extended superspheres. As an application of ∏ superspherical coherent precipitate is shown.

Equilibrium shape of (4)He crystal under zero gravity below 200 mK

Equilibrium crystal shape is the lowest energy crystal shape that is hardly realized in ordinary crystals because of their slow relaxation. (4)He quantum crystals in a superfluid have been expected as unique exceptions that grow extremely fast at very low temperatures. However, on the ground, gravity considerably deforms the crystals and conceals the equilibrium crystal shape, and thus, gravity-free environment is needed to observe the equilibrium shape of (4)He. We report the relaxation processes of macroscopic (4)He crystals in a superfluid below 200 mK under zero gravity using a parabolic flight of a jet plane. When gravity was removed from a gravity-flattened (4)He crystal, the crystal rapidly transformed into a shape with flat surfaces. Although the relaxation processes were highly dependent on the initial condition, the crystals relaxed to a nearly homothetic shape in the end, indicating that they were truly in an equilibrium shape minimizing the interfacial free energy. Thanks to the equilibrium shape, we were able to determine the Wulff's origin and the size of the c-facet together with the vicinal surface profile next to the c-facet. The c-facet size was extremely small in the quantum crystals, and the facet-like flat surfaces were found to be the vicinal surfaces. At the same time, the interfacial free energy of the a-facet and s-facet was also obtained.
