Noble-Metal Nanoparticle-Embedded Silicon Nanogratings via Single-Step Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structuring

Here, we show that direct femtosecond laser nanostructuring of monocrystalline Si wafers in aqueous solutions containing noble-metal precursors (such as palladium dichloride, potassium hexachloroplatinate, and silver nitrate) allows for the creation of nanogratings decorated with mono- (Pd, Pt, and Ag) and bimetallic (Pd-Pt) nanoparticles (NPs). Multi-pulse femtosecond-laser exposure was found to drive periodically modulated ablation of the Si surface, while simultaneous thermal-induced reduction of the metal-containing acids and salts causes local surface morphology decoration with functional noble metal NPs. The orientation of the formed Si nanogratings with their nano-trenches decorated with noble-metal NPs can be controlled by the polarization direction of the incident laser beam, which was justified, for both linearly polarized Gaussian and radially (azimuthally) polarized vector beams. The produced hybrid NP-decorated Si nanogratings with a radially varying nano-trench orientation demonstrated anisotropic antireflection performance, as well as photocatalytic activity, probed by SERS tracing of the paraaminothiophenol-to-dimercaptoazobenzene transformation. The developed single-step maskless procedure of liquid-phase Si surface nanostructuring that proceeds simultaneously with the localized reduction of noble-metal precursors allows for the formation of hybrid Si nanogratings with controllable amounts of mono- and bimetallic NPs, paving the way toward applications in heterogeneous catalysis, optical detection, light harvesting, and sensing.

Scanning Algorithm Optimization for Achieving Low-Roughness Surfaces Using Ultrashort Laser Pulses: A Comparative Study

Femtosecond laser-assisted material surface modification is a rapidly growing field with numerous applications, including tribology, micromechanics, optofluidics, and medical implant treatment. For many of these applications, precise control of surface roughness after laser treatment is crucial, as it directly affects the final properties of the work surface. However, achieving low mean surface roughness values (<100 nm) is challenging due to the fundamental principles of laser light-matter interactions. The complex physical processes that occur during laser material interactions make it difficult to achieve the desired surface roughness, and only advanced scanning methods can potentially solve this issue. In our study, we analyzed laser scanning algorithms to determine the optimal method for producing surfaces with minimal roughness. We investigated how scanning parameters such as the overlap of modifications, the amount of successive line shift, and laser-scanner synchronization impact surface roughness. Using a numerical model, we obtained results that showed good agreement with experimentally acquired data. Our detailed theoretical and experimental analysis of different scanning methods can provide valuable information for the future optimization of minimal-roughness micromachining.

Femtosecond Laser Cutting of 110-550 µm Thickness Borosilicate Glass in Ambient Air and Water

The cutting quality and strength of strips cut with femtosecond-duration pulses were investigated for different thicknesses of borosilicate glass plates. The laser pulse duration was 350 fs, and cutting was performed in two environments: ambient air and water. When cutting in water, a thin flowing layer of water was formed at the front surface of the glass plate by spraying water mist next to a laser ablation zone. The energy of pulses greatly exceeded the critical self-focusing threshold in water, creating conditions favorable for laser beam filament formation. Laser cutting parameters were individually optimized for different glass thicknesses (110-550 µm). The results revealed that laser cutting of borosilicate glass in water is favorable for thicker glass (300-550 µm) thanks to higher cutting quality, higher effective cutting speed, and characteristic strength. On the other hand, cutting ultrathin glass plates (110 µm thickness) demonstrated almost identical performance and cutting quality results in both environments. In this paper, we studied cut-edge defect widths, cut-sidewall roughness, cutting throughput, characteristic strength, and band-like damage formed at the back surface of laser-cut glass strips.

Ultrashort Pulse Excited Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy in Molecules

Vibrational fingerprints of molecules and low-dimension materials can be traced with subnanometer resolution by performing Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Strong atomic-scale localization of light in the plasmonic nanocavity of the STM enables high spatial resolution in STM-TERS; however, the temporal resolution is so far limited. Here, we demonstrate stable TERS measurements from subphthalocyanine (SubPc) molecules excited by ∼500 fs long laser pulses in a low-temperature (LT) ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) STM. The intensity of the TERS signal excited with ultrashort pulses scales linearly with the increasing flux of the laser pulses and exponentially with the decreasing gap-size of the plasmonic nanocavity. Furthermore, we compare the characteristic features of TERS excited with ultrashort pulses and with a continuous-wave (CW) laser. Our work lays the foundation for future experiments of time-resolved femtosecond TERS for the investigation of molecular dynamics with utmost spatial, temporal, and energy resolutions simultaneously.

High-Repetition-Rate Femtosecond Laser Processing of Acrylic Intra-Ocular Lenses

The study of laser processing of acrylic intra-ocular lenses (IOL) by using femtosecond laser pulses delivered at high-repetition rate is presented in this work. An ultra-compact air-cooled femtosecond diode laser (HighQ2-SHG, Spectra-Physics) delivering 250 fs laser pulses at the fixed wavelength of 520 nm with a repetition rate of 63 MHz was used to process the samples. Laser inscription of linear periodic patterns on the surface and inside the acrylic substrates was studied as a function of the processing parameters as well as the optical absorption characteristics of the sample. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), and micro-Raman Spectroscopy were used to evaluate the compositional and microstructural changes induced by the laser radiation in the processed areas. Diffractive characterization was used to assess 1st-order efficiency and the refractive index change.

On-Fly Femtosecond-Laser Fabrication of Self-Organized Plasmonic Nanotextures for Chemo- and Biosensing Applications

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and surface-enhanced photoluminescence (SEPL) are emerging as versatile widespread methods for biological, chemical, and physical characterization in close proximity of nanostructured surfaces of plasmonic materials. Meanwhile, single-step, facile, cheap, and green technologies for large-scale fabrication of efficient SERS or SEPL substrates, routinely demonstrating both broad plasmonic response and high enhancement characteristics, are still missing. In this research, single-pulse spallative micron-size craters in a thick Ag film with their internal nanotexture in the form of nanosized tips are for the first time shown to demonstrate strong polarization-dependent enhancement of SEPL and SERS responses from a nanometer-thick covering Rhodamine 6G layer with average enhancement factors of 40 and 2 × 10(6), respectively. Additionally, the first detailed experimental study is reported for physical processes, underlying the formation mechanisms of ablative nanotextures on such "thick" metal films. Such mechanisms demonstrate a complex "hybrid" fluence-dependent ablation character-appearance of spallative craters, typical for bulk material, at low fluences and formation of upright standing nanotips (frozen nanojets), usually associated with thin-film ablation, in the crater centers at higher fluences. Moreover, special emphasis was made on the possibility to reshape the nanotopography of such spallative craters through multipulse laser-induced merging of their small nanotips into larger ones. The presented approach holds promise to be one of the cheapest and easiest-to-implement ways to mass-fabricate various efficient spallation-nanotextured single-element plasmonic substrates for routine chemo- and biosensing, using MHz-repetition-rate femtosecond fiber laser sources with multiplexed laser-beams.

Imaging of the DNA damage-induced dynamics of nuclear proteins via nonlinear photoperturbation

Understanding the cellular response to DNA strand breaks is crucial to decipher the mechanisms maintaining the integrity of our genome. We present a novel method to visualize how the mobility of nuclear proteins changes in response to localized DNA damage. DNA strand breaks are induced via nonlinear excitation with femtosecond laser pulses at λ = 1050 nm in a 3D-confined subnuclear volume. After a time delay of choice, protein mobility within this volume is analysed by two-photon photoactivation of PA-GFP fusion proteins at λ = 775 nm. By changing the position of the photoactivation spot with respect to the zone of lesion the influence of chromatin structure and of the distance from damage are investigated. As first applications we demonstrate a locally confined, time-dependent mobility increase of histone H1.2, and a progressive retardation of the DNA repair factor XRCC1 at damaged sites. This assay can be used to map the response of nuclear proteins to DNA damage in time and space.

Towards Stable Trapping of Single Macromolecules in Solution

The implementation of high instantaneous peak power of a femtosecond laser pulse at moderate time-averaged power (~10 mW) to trap latex nanoparticles, which is otherwise impossible with continuous wave illumination at similar power level, has recently been shown [De, A. K., Roy, D., Dutta, A. and Goswami, D. "Stable optical trapping of latex nanoparticles with ultrashort pulsed illumination", Appd. Opt., 48, G33 (2009)]. However, direct measurement of the instantaneous trapping force/stiffness due to a single pulse has been unsuccessful due to the fleeting existence (~100 fs) of the laser pulse compared with the much slower time scale associated with the available trapping force/stiffness calibration techniques, as discussed in this proceeding article. We also demonstrate trapping of quantum dots having dimension similar to macromolecules.

Fluorescence advantages with microscopic spatiotemporal control

We present a clever design concept of using femtosecond laser pulses in microscopy by selective excitation or de-excitation of one fluorophore over the other overlapping one. Using either a simple pair of femtosecond pulses with variable delay or using a train of laser pulses at 20-50 Giga-Hertz excitation, we show controlled fluorescence excitation or suppression of one of the fluorophores with respect to the other through wave-packet interference, an effect that prevails even after the fluorophore coherence timescale. Such an approach can be used both under the single-photon excitation as well as in the multi-photon excitation conditions resulting in effective higher spatial resolution. Such high spatial resolution advantage with broadband-pulsed excitation is of immense benefit to multi-photon microscopy and can also be an effective detection scheme for trapped nanoparticles with near-infrared light. Such sub-diffraction limit trapping of nanoparticles is challenging and a two-photon fluorescence diagnostics allows a direct observation of a single nanoparticle in a femtosecond high-repetition rate laser trap, which promises new directions to spectroscopy at the single molecule level in solution. The gigantic peak power of femtosecond laser pulses at high repetition rate, even at low average powers, provide huge instantaneous gradient force that most effectively result in a stable optical trap for spatial control at sub-diffraction limit. Such studies have also enabled us to explore simultaneous control of internal and external degrees of freedom that require coupling of various control parameters to result in spatiotemporal control, which promises to be a versatile tool for the microscopic world.
