Postural Responses to Achilles Tendon Vibration Depend on Feet Positioning

Mechanical vibration of the Achilles tendon is widely used to analyze the role of proprioception in postural control. The response to this tendon vibration (TV) has been analyzed in the upright posture, but the feet positions have varied in past research. Moreover, investigators have addressed only temporal parameters of the center of pressure (CoP). We investigated the effect of TV on both temporal and spectral characteristics of the CoP motion. Eighteen healthy young adults, stood barefoot, with one foot on each side of a dual platform, wearing glasses with opaque lenses. We applied 20 seconds of Achilles TV (bilaterally with inertial vibrators at a frequency of 80 Hz and an amplitude of .2-.5 mm). We analyzed CoP signals pre-vibration (PRE,4-seconds), during vibration (VIB,20 seconds), and after vibration cessation (REC,20 seconds). We repeated this protocol in natural and standardized positions (15° feet angular opening). For determining CoP amplitude and velocity, we divided the 20 seconds into five phases of four seconds each and calculated spectral parameters for the whole 20-second signals. There was an adaptation process in the speed of the CoP mediolateral (p < .01) and anteroposterior (p < .01) and in the displacement of the CoP anteroposterior (p < .01), with higher values in the VIB condition. Velocity and displacement decreased progressively in the REC condition. Median and peak frequencies were higher in the VIB condition when compared to the REC condition, but only in the mediolateral direction (p = .01). The standardized foot position led to increased speed in CoP mediolateral, anteroposterior, and mediolateral displacement (p < .01). CoP spectral characteristics were not affected by foot positioning. We concluded that adaptation of CoP motion in the presence of TV and after its cessation are observable both in time and frequency domains. Feet positioning influenced CoP motion in the presence of TV and after its cessation but it did not affect its spectral characteristics.

Effect of support foot placement on football instep kick performance

Although the support foot plays an important role in kicking a football, there has been a paucity of research exploring the effect of the placement of the support foot on kicking performance. To investigate the kick performance under different support foot positions, ten male footballers were recruited to participate in two experiments: one determining the maximum ball speed and the second determining accuracy. The participants were instructed to plant their support foot on one of nine different spots marked in the form of a 3 × 3 shape on a piece of artificial grass and asked to kick the ball. In the first (maximum speed) test, the participants tried their best to kick the ball at the maximum ball speed from nine different support foot positions. In the second (accuracy) test, the participants kicked the ball toward the target area without restricting the support foot position. The ball speed, as well as the success rate, were recorded from each support foot position. Significantly higher ball speed and accuracy were obtained at medial positions than was the case at lateral positions from the nine spots. It was concluded that although footballers may choose different positions for support foot placement, the maximum ball speed and better accuracy could be expected when the support foot was next to or slightly in front of the ball centre without too much side-by-side separation (27-37 cm).

Foot Position Measurement during Assistive Motion for Sit-to-Stand Using a Single Inertial Sensor and Shoe-Type Force Sensors

Assistive motion for sit-to-stand causes lower back pain (LBP) among caregivers. Considering previous studies that showed that foot position adjustment could reduce lumbar load during assistive motion for sit-to-stand, quantitative monitoring of and instructions on foot position could contribute toward reducing LBP among caregivers. The present study proposes and evaluates a new method for the quantitative measurement of foot position during assistive motion for sit-to-stand using a few wearable sensors that are not limited to the measurement area. The proposed method measures quantitative foot position (anteroposterior and mediolateral distance between both feet) through a machine learning technique using features obtained from only a single inertial sensor on the trunk and shoe-type force sensors. During the experiment, the accuracy of the proposed method was investigated by comparing the obtained values with those from an optical motion capture system. The results showed that the proposed method produced only minor errors (less than 6.5% of body height) when measuring foot position during assistive motion for sit-to-stand. Furthermore, Bland–Altman plots suggested no fixed errors between the proposed method and the optical motion capture system. These results suggest that the proposed method could be utilized for measuring foot position during assistive motion for sit-to-stand.

Assessments of Ground Reaction Force and Range of Motion in Terms of Fatigue during the Body Weight Squat

The purpose of this study was to analyse in detail body weight squat (BWS)’ fatigue effect on the range of motions (ROM) of the hip, knee, ankle and ground reaction forces (GRF). Twenty male recreational athletes (24.0 ± 3.1 years, 178.85 ± 7.12 cm and 78.7 ± 11.45 kg) participated in this study. BWS were performed on four load cell platforms until the participants failed to continue. Participants performed 73 ± 27 repetitions and the duration to complete of the repetitions was 140.72 ± 62.28 s during the BWS exercise. The forefoot and hindfoot of the feet were on two load cells, thus, there were two under each foot. All of the data collected was divided into three sections for analysis (24 ± 9 repetitions for each). In terms of GRF of the fore feet and hind feet, significant differences and medium to large effect size were found between each section (p = 0.006~0.040, ES = 0.693~0.492). No significant differences were found between right and left leg in all sections. Significant differences were found in the ROM of the hip between the sections of first-third (p = 0.044, ES = 0.482) and second-third (p = 0.034, ES = 0.510), the ROM of the knee first-third (p = 0.014, ES = 0.602) and second-third (p = 0.005, ES = 0.701) and for the ROM of the ankle first-second (p = 0.045, ES = 0.479). As a result, end-of-exercise fatigue caused an increase in the ROM of the hip, knee and ankle. Thus, it is observed that fatigue induced increased ROM, also increases the GRF towards the forefeet.

Biomechanical effects of foot placement during pitching

Baseball coaches often focus on the landing position of a pitcher's front foot as a key aspect of mechanics. Furthermore, controversy persists regarding positioning the rear foot on the first base or third base end of the rubber. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of rear and front foot placement on pitching biomechanics. Our hypotheses were that there would be significant kinematic and kinetic differences associated with foot placement. This was a retrospective review including 144 healthy right-handed adult baseball pitchers divided into groups based on their rear and front foot placements: first base open (1B-Open), first base closed (1B-Closed), third base open (3B-Open), and third base closed (3B-Closed). Two-way ANOVAs detected no statistically significant main effects for kinetic variables but several for kinematic variables. Open pitchers had less shoulder abduction at the time of ball release and greater maximum shoulder internal rotation velocity in comparison with closed pitchers. They also had less forearm pronation at the time of ball release and greater maximum elbow extension velocity. Additional statistically significant results were found; however, low effect sizes may lessen the clinical significance of many of the results.

Effects of Toe Direction on Biomechanics of Trunk, Pelvis, and Lower-Extremity During Single-Leg Drop Landing

CONTEXT

Toe direction is an important factor affecting knee biomechanics during various movements. However, it is still unknown whether toe direction will affect trunk and pelvic movements.

OBJECTIVE

To examine and clarify the effects of toe directions on biomechanics of trunk and pelvis as well as lower-extremities during single-leg drop landing (SLDL).

DESIGN

Descriptive laboratory study.

SETTING

Research laboratory.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 27 male recreational-level athletes.

INTERVENTION(S)

Subjects performed SLDL under 3 different toe directions, including 0° (toe neutral), 20° (toe-in [TI]), and -20° (toe-out). SLDL was captured using a motion analysis system. Nondominant leg (27 left) was chosen for the analysis.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Peak values of kinematic and kinetic parameters during landing phase were assessed. In addition, those parameters at the timing of peak vertical ground reaction force were also assessed. The data were statistically compared among 3 different toe directions using 1-way repeated measures of analysis of variance or Friedman χ2 r test.

RESULTS

Peak knee abduction angle and moment in TI were significantly larger than in toe neutral and toe-out (P < .001). Moreover, peak greater anterior inclination, greater inclination, and rotation of trunk and pelvis toward the nonlanding side were seen in TI (P < .001). At the timing of peak vertical ground reaction force, trunk inclined to the landing side with larger knee abduction angle in TI (P < .001).

CONCLUSIONS

Several previous studies suggested that larger knee abduction angle and moment on landing side as well as trunk and pelvic inclinations during landing tasks were correlated with knee ligament injury. However, it is still unknown concerning the relationship between toe direction and trunk/pelvis movements during landing tasks. From the present study, TI during SLDL would strongly affect biomechanics of trunk and pelvis as well as knee joint, compared with toe neutral and toe-out.

Additional Haptic Information Provided by Anchors Reduces Postural Sway in Young Adults Less Than Does Light Touch

This study investigated the effect of adding haptic information to the control of posture, as well as comparing the effect of both the “light touch” (LT) and “anchor system” (AS) paradigms on postural sway. Additionally, it compared the effect of location and number of points of contact to the control of posture in young adults. The location consisted of using the anchors tied to the finger and held by the hands, and, for LT, the fingertip. For the number of points of contact, participants used two hands, and then separately the dominant hand, and the non-dominant hand, for both anchor and LT paradigms. Participants stood upright with feet-together and in tandem position while performing tasks that combined the use of anchors and LT, points of contact (hand grip and finger), and number of points of contact (two hands and one hand). In this study, the anchors consist of holding in each hand a flexible cable with the other end attached to the ground. The LT consists of slightly touching a rigid surface with the tip of the index finger. The results showed, first, that the anchors improved postural control less than did the LT. Second, they revealed that holding the anchors with the hands or with them tied to the fingertip resulted in a similar reduction in postural sway only in the tandem position. For the feet-together position, the anchors tied to the fingertip were ineffective. Similarly, the use of one or two hands did not affect the contribution of the anchors. However, using two hands in the LT condition was more effective than was one hand. Third, our results showed the presence of a temporal delay between force and center-of-pressure (COP) for the anchors, only in the AP direction with feet-together. In conclusion, overall, the anchors were less effective in reducing postural sway than was the LT. The anchors attached to fingertips were as effective as the hand-held anchors in the tandem position, yet ineffective during foot-together standing. Force-COP timing explains reduced postural sway with LT but not for the anchor; hence, exploratory and supra-postural components may be involved.

Effects of Changes of Foot Position on Romberg's Quotient of Postural Sway and Leg Muscles Electromyographic Activities in Standing

Changing of standing position and visual blocking methods have been used as a convenient evaluation of standing balance by physical therapists. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of changes of foot positions on Romberg's quotient of postural sway and the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscles activities in standing for normal men. Subjects were 45 college students. For the measurement of muscles activities, 15 subjects were selected at random from among the 45 students. The standing positions were standing with legs 10 cm apart, standing with legs together, tandem standing, standing on tiptoes, and standing on one leg with the eyes open and closed. Measurements were made using a center of foot pressure recorder and surface electromyography for 30 seconds. Romberg's quotient and the relative muscle activities of the leg were both found to be in the order standing with legs apart, standing with legs together, tandem standing, standing on tiptoes, standing on one leg. It has conventionally been considered that the instability of postural sway is increased when vision is blocked. The present results suggested that postural regulation by the physiological subsystem is indirectly affected by vision and somatosensory input.
