Earth's earliest and deepest purported fossils may be iron-mineralized chemical gardens

Recognizing fossil microorganisms is essential to the study of life's origin and evolution and to the ongoing search for life on Mars. Purported fossil microbes in ancient rocks include common assemblages of iron-mineral filaments and tubes. Recently, such assemblages have been interpreted to represent Earth's oldest body fossils, Earth's oldest fossil fungi, and Earth's best analogues for fossils that might form in the basaltic Martian subsurface. Many of these putative fossils exhibit hollow circular cross-sections, lifelike (non-crystallographic, constant-thickness, and bifurcate) branching, anastomosis, nestedness within ‘sheaths’, and other features interpreted as strong evidence for a biological origin, since no abiotic process consistent with the composition of the filaments has been shown to produce these specific lifelike features either in nature or in the laboratory. Here, I show experimentally that abiotic chemical gardening can mimic such purported fossils in both morphology and composition. In particular, chemical gardens meet morphological criteria previously proposed to establish biogenicity, while also producing the precursors to the iron minerals most commonly constitutive of filaments in the rock record. Chemical gardening is likely to occur in nature. Such microstructures should therefore not be assumed to represent fossil microbes without independent corroborating evidence.

A New Frontier for Palaeobiology: Earth's Vast Deep Biosphere

Diverse micro-organisms populate a global deep biosphere hosted by rocks and sediments beneath land and sea, containing more biomass than any other biome except forests. This paper reviews an emerging palaeobiological archive of these dark habitats: microfossils preserved in ancient pores and fractures in the crust. This archive, seemingly dominated by mineralized filaments (although rods and coccoids are also reported), is presently far too sparsely sampled and poorly understood to reveal trends in the abundance, distribution, or diversity of deep life through time. New research is called for to establish the nature and extent of the fossil record of Earth's deep biosphere by combining systematic exploration, rigorous microanalysis, and experimental studies of both microbial preservation and the formation of abiotic pseudofossils within the crust. It is concluded that the fossil record of Earth's largest microbial habitat may still have much to tell us about the history of life, the evolution of biogeochemical cycles, and the search for life on Mars.

A new epiphyllous fly-speck fungus from the Early Cretaceous Potomac Group of Virginia (125-112 Ma): Protographum luttrellii, gen. et sp. nov

Fly-speck fungi reproduce via thyriothecia that consist of sporogenous tissue appressed to cuticle surfaces of plant leaves and covered by a shield-like scutellum. Thyriothecial scutella likely evolved repeatedly in Dothideomycetes (Ascomycota), and their morphology varies by lineage. Fly-speck fungi have an exceptionally good fossil record that begins in the Mesozoic. The interpretation of scutellum characters in fossils may provide insights into origins of Dothideomycetes and help calibrate the timing of ascomycete evolution. From sediments of the Lower Cretaceous (125-112 Ma) Potomac Group of Virginia, from Dutch Gap Canal, lower Zone 1, we found scutella similar to those of extant Aulographaceae (Dothideomycetes), attached to a single piece of dispersed coniferous cuticle. We analyze hyphae and scutellum development among four extant Aulographaceae species for comparison with the fossil. The excellent preservation of fungi on the leaf cuticle surface allows us to infer a developmental sequence for the fossil. Scutellum development begins with coordinated growth of multiple neighboring generator hyphae and continues with hyphae producing two-dimensional pseudomonopodial, dichotomous, radial growth. Asci and ascospores were not found. We coded states for seven morphological characters using direct observations of the fossil and eight extant taxa, and using the literature for 28 others. We inferred a phylogeny using nuclear 18S and 28S rDNA of 36 extant taxa, 34 Dothideomycetes and two Arthoniomycetes. The phylogeny includes newly determined sequences from five species, two from Aulographaceae. With a branch-and-bound search, we inferred the most parsimonious placements of the fossil given the molecular tree topology. The parsimony analysis constrained by the rDNA phylogeny places the fossil taxon among stem lineages near Aulographaceae or among the known living members of Aulographaceae. We describe the fossil morphotype as Protographum luttrellii, gen. et sp. nov. The fossil provides the oldest evidence of morphological characters restricted among extant fungi to Aulographaceae.

Arthrobotrys blastospora sp. nov. (Orbiliomycetes): A Living Fossil Displaying Morphological Traits of Mesozoic Carnivorous Fungi

The evolution of carnivorous fungi in deep time is still poorly understood as their fossil record is scarce. The approximately 100-million-year-old Cretaceous Palaeoanellus dimorphus is the earliest fossil of carnivorous fungi ever discovered. However, its accuracy and ancestral position has been widely questioned because no similar species have been found in modern ecosystems. During a survey of carnivorous fungi in Yunnan, China, two fungal isolates strongly morphologically resembling P. dimorphus were discovered and identified as a new species of Arthrobotrys (Orbiliaceae, Orbiliomycetes), a modern genus of carnivorous fungi. Phylogenetically, Arthrobotrys blastospora sp. nov. forms a sister lineage to A. oligospora. A. blastospora catches nematodes with adhesive networks and produces yeast-like blastospores. This character combination is absent in all other previously known modern carnivorous fungi but is strikingly similar to the Cretaceous P. dimorphus. In this paper, we describe A. blastospora in detail and discuss its relationship to P. dimorphus.
