Morphology and Phylogeny of Lyophylloid Mushrooms in China with Description of Four New Species

The lyophylloid agarics are a group of ecologically highly diversified macrofungi, some of which are very popular edible mushrooms. However, we know little about lyophylloid species diversity in China. In this study, we described four new species from China: Lyophyllum atrofuscum, L. subalpinarum, L. subdecastes, and Ossicaulis sichuanensis. We conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses of Lyophyllaceae based on the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nLSU) and the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS). Phylogenetic analyses by the maximum likelihood method and Bayesian inference showed that the four new species are unique monophyletic species. A key to the species of Lyophyllum from China and a key to Ossicaulis worldwide were given.

Two new species of Phaeohelotium (Leotiomycetes: Helotiaceae) from Chile and their putative ectomycorrhizal status

Species of the genus Phaeohelotium (Leotiomycetes: Helotiaceae) are cup fungi that grow on decaying wood, leaves, litter, and directly on soil. Northern Hemisphere species are primarily found on litter and wood, whereas in the Southern Hemisphere the genus includes a mix of saprotrophs as well as taxa that grow on soil in association with ectomycorrhizal trees. The diversity of this genus has not been fully explored in southern South America. Here we describe two species from Chile, Phaeohelotium maiusaurantium sp. nov. and Ph. pallidum sp. nov., found on soil in Patagonian Nothofagaceae-dominated forests. We present macro- and micromorphological descriptions, illustrations, and molecular phylogenetic analyses. The two new species are placed in Phaeohelotium with high support in our 15-locus phylogeny as well as phylogenetic reconstructions based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene. Our ITS phylogeny places both Ph. maiusaurantium and Ph. pallidum in a well-supported subclade that includes ectomycorrhizal root tip samples from Australasia. Similar species can be separated from these new taxa based on morphological characteristics, biogeography, substrate, and sequence data. In addition, two unnamed species from Chilean Nothofagaceae forests (Phaeohelotium sp. 1 and Phaeohelotium sp. 2) are documented from scant collections and sequence data and await description until more material becomes available. A new order, Entrophosporales, and three new Entrophospora species in Glomeromycota

As a result of phylogenomic, phylogenetic, and morphological analyses of members of the genus Claroideoglomus, four potential new glomoid spore-producing species and Entrophospora infrequens, a new order, Entrophosporales, with one family, Entrophosporaceae (=Claroideoglomeraceae), was erected in the phylum Glomeromycota. The phylogenomic analyses recovered the Entrophosporales as sister to a clade formed by Diversisporales and Glomeraceae. The strongly conserved entrophosporoid morph of E. infrequens, provided with a newly designated epitype, was shown to represent a group of cryptic species with the potential to produce different glomoid morphs. Of the four potential new species, three enriched the Entrophosporales as new Entrophospora species, E. argentinensis, E. glacialis, and E. furrazolae, which originated from Argentina, Sweden, Oman, and Poland. The fourth fungus appeared to be a glomoid morph of the E. infrequens epitype. The physical association of the E. infrequens entrophosporoid and glomoid morphs was reported and illustrated here for the first time. The phylogenetic analyses, using nuc rDNA and rpb1 concatenated sequences, confirmed the previous conclusion that the genus Albahypha in the family Entrophosporaceae sensu Oehl et al. is an unsupported taxon. Finally, the descriptions of the Glomerales, Entrophosporaceae, and Entrophospora were emended and new nomenclatural combinations were introduced.

Four new species of Diaporthe (Diaporthaceae, Diaporthales) from forest plants in China

Species of Diaporthe inhabit a wide range of plant hosts as plant pathogens, endophytes and saprobes. During trips to collect forest pathogens in Beijing, Jiangxi, Shaanxi and Zhejiang Provinces in China, 16 isolates of Diaporthe were obtained from branch cankers and leaf spots. These isolates were studied by applying a polyphasic approach including morphological, cultural data, and phylogenetic analyses of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS), calmodulin (cal), histone H3 (his3), partial translation elongation factor-1α (tef-1α) and β-tubulin (tub2) loci. Results revealed four new taxa, D.celticola, D.meliae, D.quercicola, D.rhodomyrti spp. nov. and two known species, D.eres and D.multiguttulata.

Description of Crinitomyces reliqui gen. nov., sp. nov. and Reassignment of Trichosporiella flavificans and Candida ghanaensis to the Genus Crinitomyces

The systematic position of 16 yeast strains isolated from Thailand, Hungary, The Netherlands, and the Republic of Poland were evaluated using morphological, physiological, and phylogenetic analyses. Based on the similarity of the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene, the strains were assigned to two distinct species, Trichosporiella flavificans and representatives of a new yeast species. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that Candida ghanaensis CBS 8798T showed a strong relationship with the aforementioned two species. The more fascinating issue is that Candida and Trichosporiella genera have been placed in different subphyla, Saccharomycotina and Pezizomycotina, respectively. The close relationship between Trichosporiella flavificans, Candida ghanaensis and the undescribed species was unexpected and needed to be clarified. As for morphological and physiological characteristics, the three yeast species shared a hairy colony appearance and an ability to assimilate 18 carbon sources. Based on phylogenetic analyses carried out in the present study, Crinitomyces gen. nov. was proposed to accommodate the new yeast species, Crinitomyces reliqui sp. nov. (Holotype: TBRC 15054, Isotypes: DMKU-FW23-23 and PYCC 9001). In addition, the two species Trichosporiella flavificans and Candida ghanaensis were reassigned to the genus Crinitomyces as, Crinitomyces flavificans (Type: CBS 760.79) comb. nov. and Crinitomyces ghanaensis (Type: CBS 8798) comb. nov., respectively.

A new genus and four new species in the /Psathyrella s.l. clade from China

Based on traditional morphological and phylogenetic analyses (ITS, LSU, tef-1α and β-tub) of psathyrelloid specimens collected from China, four new species are here described: Heteropsathyrellamacrocystidia, Psathyrellaamygdalinospora, P.piluliformoides, and P.truncatisporoides. H.macrocystidia forms a distinct lineage and groups together with Cystoagaricus, Kauffmania, and Typhrasa in the /Psathyrella s.l. clade, based on the Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian analyses. Thus, the monospecific genus Heteropsathyrella gen. nov. is introduced for the single species. Detailed descriptions, colour photos, and illustrations are presented in this paper.

Morpho-phylogenetic evidence reveals new species in Rhytismataceae (Rhytismatales, Leotiomycetes, Ascomycota) from Guizhou Province, China

Karst formations represent a unique eco-environment. Research in the microfungi inhabiting this area is limited. During an ongoing survey of ascomycetous microfungi from karst terrains in Guizhou Province, China, we discovered four new species, which are introduced here as Hypodermaparalinderae, Terrierakarsti, T.meitanensis and T.sigmoideospora placed in Rhytismataceae, based on phylogenetic analyses and morphological characters. Molecular analyses, based on concatenated LSU-ITS-mtSSU sequence data, were used to infer phylogenetic affinities. Detail descriptions and comprehensive illustrations of these new taxa are provided and relationships with the allied species are discussed, based on comparative morphology and molecular data.

Red yeasts from leaf surfaces and other habitats: three new species and a new combination of Symmetrospora (Pucciniomycotina, Cystobasidiomycetes)

Our understanding of the systematics of red yeasts has greatly improved with the availability of sequence data and it is now clear that the majority of these fungi belong to three different classes of Pucciniomycotina (Basidiomycota): Agaricostilbomycetes, Cystobasidiomycetes, and Microbotryomycetes. Despite improvements in phylogenetic placement, the taxonomy of these fungi has long been in need of revision and still has not been entirely resolved, partly due to missing taxa. In the present study, we present data of culture-based environmental yeast isolation, revealing several undescribed species of Symmetrospora, which was recently introduced to accommodate six species previously placed in the asexual genera Sporobolomyces and Rhodotorula in the gracilis/marina clade of Cystobasidiomycetes. Based on molecular phylogenetic analyses of three rDNA loci, morphology, and biochemical studies, we formally describe the following new species: Symmetrospora clarorosea sp. nov. from leaf surfaces in Portugal and the USA; S. pseudomarina sp. nov. from leaf surfaces in Brazil, and the USA and decaying wood in the USA; and S. suhii sp. nov. from a beetle gut in the USA, leaf surfaces in Brazil and marine water in the Taiwan and Thailand. Finally, we propose a new combination for Sporobolomyces oryzicola based on our molecular phylogenetic data, Symmetrospora oryzicola comb. nov.
