Point Sensor Networks Struggle to Detect and Quantify Short Controlled Releases at Oil and Gas Sites

This study evaluated multiple commercially available continuous monitoring (CM) point sensor network (PSN) solutions under single-blind controlled release testing conducted at operational upstream and midstream oil and natural gas (O&G) sites. During releases, PSNs reported site-level emission rate estimates of 0 kg/h between 38 and 86% of the time. When non-zero site-level emission rate estimates were provided, no linear correlation between the release rate and the reported emission rate estimate was observed. The average, aggregated across all PSN solutions during releases, shows 5% of the mixing ratio readings at downwind sensors were greater than the site's baseline plus two standard deviations. Four of seven total PSN solutions tested during this field campaign provided site-level emission rate estimates with the site average relative error ranging from -100% to 24% for solution D, -100% to -43% for solution E, -25% for solution F (solution F was only at one site), and -99% to 430% for solution G, with an overall average of -29% across all sites and solutions. Of all the individual site-level emission rate estimates, only 11% were within ±2.5 kg/h of the study team's best estimate of site-level emissions at the time of the releases.

Characterizing the Opportunity Space for Sustainable Hydrothermal Valorization of Wet Organic Wastes

Resource recovery from wet organic wastes can support circular economies by creating financial incentives to produce renewable energy and return nutrients to agriculture. In this study, we characterize the potential for hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL)-based resource recovery systems to advance the economic and environmental sustainability of wastewater sludge, FOG (fats, oils, and grease), food waste, green waste, and animal manure management through the production of liquid biofuels (naphtha, diesel), fertilizers (struvite, ammonium sulfate), and power (heat, electricity). From the waste management perspective, median costs range from -193 $·tonne-1 (FOG) to 251 $·tonne-1 (green waste), and median carbon intensities range from 367 kg CO2 eq·tonne-1 (wastewater sludge) to 769 kg CO2 eq·tonne-1 (green waste). From the fuel production perspective, the minimum selling price of renewable diesel blendstocks are within the commercial diesel price range (2.37 to 5.81 $·gal-1) and have a lower carbon intensity than petroleum diesel (101 kg CO2 eq·MMBTU-1). Finally, through uncertainty analysis and Monte Carlo filtering, we set specific targets (i.e., achieve wastewater sludge-to-biocrude yield >0.440) for the future development of hydrothermal waste management system components. Overall, our work demonstrates the potential of HTL-based resource recovery systems to reduce the costs and carbon intensity of resource-rich organic wastes.

[Estimation of Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Emission Reduction Potential of Beijing During the 14th Five-Year Plan Period Under the Background of "Carbon Peak and Neutrality"]

To achieve the goal of "carbon peak and neutrality," the strict requirements for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions control in the agricultural sector were recommended in relevant plans for Beijing during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. Through collecting agricultural activity data and calculating and screening the emission factors, the amount and emission characteristics of agricultural GHG emissions in Beijing in 2020 were estimated and set as the baseline condition. On this basis, the GHG emissions in 2025 with optimized measurements implemented, which were selected in combination with the natural conditions and planting-breeding mode of Beijing, were set as the reduction condition. The emission reduction potential and its distribution during the 14th Five-Year Plan Period were predicted simultaneously. Meanwhile, the reduction effects on the GHG emissions of optimized measurements were evaluated. In addition, relevant policy recommendations on GHG reduction were proposed accordingly. The results revealed that the total agricultural GHG emissions in Beijing were estimated to be 456000 t (CO2-eq) in 2020, primarily from sources of animal intestinal fermentation and manure management, with contribution rates of 50.7% and 26.7%, respectively. Spatially, it was mainly distributed in districts with large livestock and poultry breeding scales, such as Shunyi District, Miyun District, and Yanqing District, etc. It was predicted that in 2025, the total agricultural GHG emissions would be 349000 t (CO2-eq), and the emission reduction potential in the 14th Five-Year Plan period would be 107000 t (CO2-eq). Animal intestinal fermentation would be the emission source with the largest reduction potential (60000 tons, CO2-eq), followed by the emission source of animal manure management (37000 tons, CO2-eq). Adjusting fodder composition and optimizing manure management were analyzed to be the most effective optimized measurements for agricultural GHG emission reduction. Moreover, the emission reduction potential of CH4 would be greater than that of N2O. The emission reduction potential would be mainly distributed in Miyun District, Shunyi District, Yanqing District, Fangshan District, Tongzhou District, and other suburbs with large livestock and poultry breeding scales, accounting for more than 10% of the total emission reduction potential for each. These regions with large emission reduction potential should be prioritized and then the assessments should be extended to the whole city. The measurements were recommended as follows:① the research and promotion of technologies such as fodder optimization and the efficient treatment of manure should be strengthened, ② the scope of the combination of planting and breeding model should be expanded to promote the development of circular agriculture, and ③ relevant standards, guidelines, and specifications for green and low-carbon agriculture should be formulated, and the regulatory and policy system for synergy reduction of agricultural pollution and GHG should be developed.

Modeling of the Spatial Distribution of Forest Carbon Storage in a Tropical/Subtropical Island with Multiple Ecozones

Visual data on the geographic distribution of carbon storage help policy makers to formulate countermeasures for global warming. However, Taiwan, as an island showing diversity in climate and topography, had lacked valid visual data on the distribution of forest carbon storage between the last two forest surveys (1993-2015). This study established a model to estimate and illustrate the distribution of forest carbon storage. This model uses land use, stand morphology, and carbon conversion coefficient databases accordingly for 51 types of major forests in Taiwan. An estimation in 2006 was conducted and shows an overall carbon storage of 165.65 Mt C, with forest carbon storage per unit area of 71.56 t C ha-1, where natural forests and plantations respectively contributed 114.15 Mt C (68.9%) and 51.50 Mt C (31.1%). By assuming no change in land use type, the carbon sequestration from 2006 to 2007 by the 51 forest types was estimated to be 5.21 Mt C yr-1 using historical tree growth and mortality rates. The result reflects the reality of the land use status and the events of coverage shifting with time by combining the two forest surveys in Taiwan.

[Effect of Water-Fertilizer-Gas Coupling on Soil N2O Emission and Yield in Greenhouse Tomato]

To reveal the effect of water, fertilizer, and gas coupling on soil N₂O emissions in greenhouse tomato soil and suggest appropriate measures for increasing yield and reducing N₂O emissions, static chamber-gas chromatography was used to study the effects of soil N₂O emissions. The variation laws of soil temperature, water-filled pore space (WFPS), NO₃^--N content, and O₂ content and the influence mechanism of N₂O emission under the condition of water-fertilizer-gas coupling were analyzed. Aerated conditions comprised two water levels, 0.6 W and 1.0 W (representing 40% deficit irrigation and full irrigation, W represents when sufficient irrigation water was available), and three nitrogen levels (120 kg·hm^-2, 180 kg·hm^-2, and 240 kg·hm^-2, representing low, medium, and high nitrogen, respectively, with 50% F, 75% F, and F, F is the recommended amount of nitrogen application locally). Three levels of fertilization were used as controlled unaerated full irrigation (O representing aeration, and CK representing conventional drip irrigation). Nine treatments were designed in the experiment. The results showed that the tomato field cumulative emission of N₂O under full irrigation (W2F1O, W2F2O, and W2F3O) increased by an average of 55.7% compared with the corresponding treatment at W1 level (P<0.05). The N₂O emissions of W1F3O, W2F3O, and W2F3CK fields significantly increased by 13.4% and 43.8% compared with medium nitrogen W1F2O, W2F2O, and W2F2CK and low nitrogen W1F1O, W2F1O, and W2F1CK treatments, respectively (P<0.05).Compared with the corresponding unaerated full irrigation, the emissions (W2F1O, W2F2O, and W2F3O) significantly increased by 11.2% (P<0.05). Aeration, the increase of nitrogen rate, and irrigation amount resulted in the increment of tomato yield and yield-scaled N₂O emissions. Compared with medium nitrogen, the yield and yield-scaled N₂O emission of high nitrogen treatment increased by 12.5% (P<0.05) and 3.9% (P>0.05), respectively. Compared with low nitrogen treatment, the yield and yield-scaled N₂O emission of high nitrogen treatment increased by 30.4% and 9.6% (P<0.05), respectively. The yield and yield-scaled N₂O emissions of aerated full irrigation significantly increased by 29.7% and 18.7%, respectively, compared with aerated deficient irrigation. Compared with unaerated irrigation treatment, the yield under aerated treatment increased by 10.4% (P<0.05), and the yield-scaled N₂O emission increased by 3.9% (P>0.05). Under the conditions of increasing irrigation water, decreasing fertilizer application, and aeration, partial factor productivity, and irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) can be significantly increased. After comprehensive consideration of cumulative N₂O emissions, tomato production, nitrogen fertilizer utilization efficiency, IWUE, and yield-scaled N₂O emission, it can be concluded that aerated low nitrogen full irrigation is an optimal management mode. The results provide reference for increasing yield and reducing emissions of greenhouse tomato.

The Impacts of Regulations and Financial Development on the Operations of Supply Chains with Greenhouse Gas Emissions

To establish a micro foundation to understand the impacts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission regulations and financial development levels on firms’ GHG emissions, we build a two-stage dynamic game model to incorporate GHG emission regulations (in terms of an emission tax) and financial development (represented by the corresponding financing cost) into a two-echelon supply chain. With the subgame perfect equilibrium, we identify the conditions to determine whether an emission regulatory policy and/or financial development can affect GHG emissions in the supply chain. We also reveal the impacts of the strictness of GHG emission regulation, the financial development level, and the unit GHG emission rate on the operations of the supply chain and the corresponding profitability implications. Managerial insights are also discussed.

[Influences of different irrigation amounts on carbon sequestration in wheat-maize rotation system]

Irrigation can influence greenhouse gas (GHG) emission and carbon footprint in agricultural production. In this study, annual GHG emissions (including CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O) were monitored with static opaque chamber and gas chromatography from a wheat-maize rotation system under different irrigation treatments in the Guanzhong Plain of China during 2014-2015. A total of four different irrigation treatments were conducted, e.g. W₀, W₁₂₀, W₁₈₀, and W₂₄₀, where the subscripts represented the irrigation amounts in mm. Net global warming potential (NGWP) and carbon footprint were used to evaluate the influence of different irrigation amounts on GHG emission and composition of carbon footprint of crop production. Compared with treatment W₀, wheat yield of treatments W₁₂₀, W₁₈₀, and W₂₄₀ increased by 31.3%, 44.3% and 33.7%, while corn yield increased by 9.9%, 22.6%, and 33.8%, respectively. Similarly, annual CO₂ emission increased by 22.2%, 24.3% and 15.1% and annual N₂O emission by 18.6%, 67.8%, and 91.5%, respectively, while annual CH₄ absorption decreased by 51.7%, 79.6% and 97.8%, respectively. The values of NGWP increased by 20.1%, 31.6%, and 31.4%, respectively. The carbon footprint of treatment W₁₂₀ was 19.1% lower than that of W₀, while W₁₈₀ and W₂₄₀ showed no significant difference. Treatments W₁₂₀ and W₂₄₀ increased carbon footprint per unit crop yield by 44.5% and 23.3%, respectively, while W₁₈₀ showed no significant difference. Considering both the economic and environmental effects of different irrigation amounts, we recommend the irrigating amount of 180 mm for the wheat-maize rotation system in the Guanzhong Plain of China for the purposes of water saving and carbon sequestration.

Estimating the Additional Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Korea: Focused on Demolition of Asbestos Containing Materials in Building

When asbestos containing materials (ACM) must be removed from the building before demolition, additional greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are generated. However, precedent studies have not considered the removal of ACM from the building. The present study aimed to develop a model for estimating GHG emissions created by the ACM removal processes, specifically the removal of asbestos cement slates (ACS). The second objective was to use the new model to predict the total GHG emission produced by ACM removal in the entire country of Korea. First, an input-equipment inventory was established for each step of the ACS removal process. Second, an energy consumption database for each equipment type was established. Third, the total GHG emission contributed by each step of the process was calculated. The GHG emissions generated from the 1,142,688 ACS-containing buildings in Korea was estimated to total 23,778 tonCO₂eq to 132,141 tonCO₂eq. This study was meaningful in that the emissions generated by ACS removal have not been studied before. Furthermore, the study deals with additional problems that can be triggered by the presence of asbestos in building materials. The method provided in this study is expected to contribute greatly to the calculation of GHG emissions caused by ACM worldwide.

The Greenhouse Gas Emission from Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Construction in China

This study proposes an inventory analysis method to evaluate the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from Portland cement concrete pavement construction, based on a case project in the west of China. The concrete pavement construction process was divided into three phases, namely raw material production, concrete manufacture and pavement onsite construction. The GHG emissions of the three phases are analyzed by a life cycle inventory method. The CO₂e is used to indicate the GHG emissions. The results show that for 1 km Portland cement concrete pavement construction, the total CO₂e is 8215.31 tons. Based on the evaluation results, the CO₂e of the raw material production phase is 7617.27 tons, accounting for 92.7% of the total GHG emissions; the CO₂e of the concrete manufacture phase is 598,033.10 kg, accounting for 7.2% of the total GHG emissions. Lastly, the CO₂e of the pavement onsite construction phase is 8396.59 kg, accounting for only 0.1% of the total GHG emissions. The main greenhouse gas is CO₂ in each phase, which accounts for more than 98% of total emissions. N₂O and CH₄ emissions are relatively insignificant.

Greenhouse gas emissions from the treatment of household plastic containers and packaging: replacement with biomass-based materials

The purpose of this study was to quantify the life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction that could be achieved by replacement of fossil-derived materials with biodegradable, biomass-based materials for household plastic containers and packaging, considering a variety of their treatment options. The biomass-based materials were 100% polylactide or a combination of polybutylene succinate adipate and polylactide. A scenario analysis was conducted considering alternative recycling methods. Five scenarios were considered: two for existing fossil-derived materials (the current approach in Japan) and the three for biomass-based materials. Production and waste disposal of 1 m(3) of plastic containers and packaging from households was defined as the functional unit. The results showed that replacement of fossil-derived materials with biomass-based materials could reduce life-cycle GHG emissions by 14-20%. Source separation and recycling should be promoted. When the separate collection ratio reached 100%, replacement with biomass-based materials could potentially reduce GHG emissions by 31.9%. Food containers are a priority for replacement, because they alone could reduce GHG emissions by 10%. A recycling system for biomass-based plastics must be carefully designed, considering aspects such as the transition period from fossil-derived plastics to biomass-based plastics.
