Radiofrequency field enhancement with high dielectric constant (HDC) pads in a receive array coil at 3.0T

PURPOSE

To investigate the use of a new high-dielectric constant (HDC) material for improving SNR and transmission efficiency for clinical MRI applications at 3 Tesla (T) with cervical spine imaging.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Human subjects were imaged using a commercial cervical spine receive array coil on a clinical system with and without pads containing Barium Titanate beads in deuterium water placed around the neck. Numerical electromagnetic field simulations of the same configuration were also performed.

RESULTS

Experimental and simulated maps of transmit and receive fields showed greater efficiency for imaging the cervical spine when the pads were present. Experimental measurements showed a significant improvement in SNR with the pads present and an average input power reduction of 46%.

CONCLUSION

Use of HDC material can enhance SNR and transmission efficiency for clinical imaging of the cervical spine at 3.0T.

Improvements of transmit efficiency and receive sensitivity with ultrahigh dielectric constant (uHDC) ceramics at 1.5 T and 3 T

PURPOSE

Incorporating high dielectric constant (HDC) materials into radiofrequency (RF) coils has been shown to effectively improve RF coil performance at 7 and 3 T because of the induced displacement current in the high dielectric constant materials. The displacement current is proportional to the RF field frequency and permittivity of the material. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of high dielectric constant materials with even greater permittivity on the RF field at 1.5 T and 3 T.

METHODS

Several monolithic ceramic materials with an ultrahigh dielectric constant ranging from 1200 to 3300 were investigated at 1.5 T and 3 T with phantom and human brain imaging along with computer modeling.

RESULTS

Experimental measurements in phantom studies showed a significant enhancement of signal-to-noise ratio (50-100%) and strong transmission power reduction (3-27-fold). Under suboptimal experimental conditions in this study, the signal-to-noise ratio in the human brain cortex was nearly doubled, which produced high-resolution image without the associated stronger magnetic susceptibility artifacts and elevated specific absorption rate concerns at higher field strengths.

CONCLUSIONS

Use of ultrahigh dielectric constant ceramic materials is a simple and low-cost approach that could further improve the RF technology to maximize image signal-to-noise ratio and reduce RF energy deposition for human studies. Asymmetric Glycolated Substitution for Enhanced Permittivity and Ecocompatibility of High-Performance Photovoltaic Electron Acceptor

Traditional organic photovoltaic materials exhibit low dielectric constants (εr) of 3 to 4, restricting the further enhancement of power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein we design and synthesize a fused-ring electron acceptor named Y6-4O through introducing an asymmetric highly polarizable oligo(ethylene glycol) side chain onto the pyrrole unit of Y6. Compared with alkylated Y6 (εr = 3.36), asymmetric glycolated Y6-4O shows a notably higher εr value of 5.13 and better solubility in nonhalogen solvents. Because of the higher εr value, the devices based on as-cast PM6:Y6-4O processed using toluene exhibit a higher charge separation yield, slower bimolecular recombination kinetics, and less voltage loss relative to the control devices based on PM6:Y6. Consequently, a high PCE of 15.2% is achieved for PM6:Y6-4O-based devices, whereas the PM6:Y6-based devices show PCEs of only 7.38%. 15.2% is the highest PCE for the as-cast nonhalogenated processed OSC devices, and it is also much higher than the values (<8.5%) reported for OSCs based on high-permittivity (εr > 5) organic photovoltaic semiconductors.

Toward whole-cortex enhancement with an ultrahigh dielectric constant helmet at 3T

PURPOSE

To present a 3T brain imaging study using a conformal prototype helmet constructed with an ultra-high dielectric constant (uHDC; ε_r ~ 1000) materials that can be inserted into standard receive head-coils.

METHODS

A helmet conformal to a standard human head constructed with uHDC materials was characterized through electromagnetic simulations and experimental work. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), transmit efficiency, and power deposition with the uHDC helmet inserted within a 20-channel head coil were measured in vivo and compared with a 64-channel head coil and the 20-channel coil without the helmet. Seven healthy volunteers were analyzed.

RESULTS

Simulation and in vivo experimental results showed that transmit efficiency was improved by nearly 3 times within localized regions for a quadrature excitation, with a measured global increase of 58.21 ± 6.54% over 7 volunteers. The use of a parallel transmit spokes pulse compensated for severe degradation of B 1 + homogeneity, at the expense of higher global and local specific absorption rate levels. A SNR histogram analysis with statistical testing demonstrated that the uHDC helmet enhanced a 20-channel head coil to the level of the 64-channel head coil, with the improvements mainly within the cortical brain regions.

CONCLUSION

A prototype uHDC helmet enhanced the SNR of a standard head coil to the level of a high density 64-channel coil, although transmit homogeneity was compromised. Further improvements in SNR may be achievable with optimization of this technology, and could be a low-cost approach for future radiofrequency engineering work in the brain at 3T.

Dense Sm and Mn Co-Doped BaTiO₃ Ceramics with High Permittivity

The structure, valence state, and dielectric properties of (Ba_1−xSm_x)(Ti_0.99Mn_0.01)O₃ (BSTM) (x = 0.02‒0.07) ceramics prepared via a high temperature (1400 °C/12 h) solid state reaction were investigated. A homogeneous and dense microstructure was observed in all samples. With increasing Sm content, the crystal structure changed from tetragonal (x ≤ 0.06) to cubic (x = 0.07) and unit cell volume (V₀) decreased continuously, which was mainly due to the substitution of Ba²⁺ ions by smaller Sm³⁺ ions in the perovskite lattice. Electron paramagnetic resonance investigation revealed that Mn ions were reduced from high valence to low valence under the role of Sm³⁺ donor, and only Mn²⁺ ions were observed at x = 0.07. The Curie temperature (T_c) moved to lower values, from 105.5 down to 20.4 °C, and the x = 0.07 sample satisfied Y5V specification with high permittivity (ε′_RT > 13,000) and low loss (tan δ < 0.03).

A Sensor for Characterisation of Liquid Materials with High Permittivity and High Dielectric Loss

This paper reports on a sensor based on multi-element complementary split-ring resonator for the measurement of liquid materials. The resonator consists of three split rings for improved measurement sensitivity. A hole is fabricated at the centre of the rings to accommodate a hollow glass tube, through which the liquid sample can be injected. Electromagnetic simulations demonstrate that both the resonant frequency and quality factor of the sensor vary considerably with the dielectric constant and loss tangent of the liquid sample. The volume ratio between the liquid sample and glass tube is 0.36, yielding great sensitivity in the measured results for high loss liquids. Compared to the design based on rectangular split rings, the proposed ring structure offers 37% larger frequency shifts and 9.1% greater resonant dips. The relationship between dielectric constant, loss tangent, measured quality factor and resonant frequency is derived. Experimental verification is conducted using ethanol solution with different concentrations. The measurement accuracy is calculated to be within 2.8%, and this validates the proposed approach.

Enhanced Dielectric and Hydrophobic Properties of Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)/TiO2 Nanowire Arrays Composite Film Surface Modified by Electrospinning

In this research, we designed a feasible method to prepare composite films with high permittivity and significantly enhanced hydrophobic performance, which showed huge potential in the electrowetting field. TiO2 nanowire arrays were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal process, and poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) was spin-coated on the nanowire arrays to form composite, the surface of which was modified by electrospinning. Due to the great orientation of TiO2 nanowires, dipoles and space charges are in ordered arrangement along the electric field, and this strongly reinforced the Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars (MWS) polarization, thus the permittivity of the composite (TiO2 nanowire length/film thickness is 0.769) reaches 53 at 1 kHz, which is nearly 3 times higher than pure P(VDF-TrFE). Meanwhile the composite film possesses low dielectric loss (0.07) and low conductivity (2.69 × 10-9 S/cm), showing good insulation. The contact angle of the composite after electrospinning (about 137°) was greatly enhanced from pure P(VDF-TrFE) spin-coated film (about 89°), which can be attributed to the microrough structure built by P(VDF-TrFE) nanofibers.
