Lithium Manganese Sulfates as a New Class of Supercapattery Materials at Elevated Temperatures

To make supercapattery devices feasible, there is an urgent need to find electrode materials that exhibit a hybrid mechanism of energy storage. Herein, we provide a first report on the capability of lithium manganese sulfates to be used as supercapattery materials at elevated temperatures. Two compositions are studied: monoclinic Li₂Mn(SO₄)₂ and orthorhombic Li₂Mn₂(SO₄)₃, which are prepared by a freeze-drying method followed by heat treatment at 500 °C. The electrochemical performance of sulfate electrodes is evaluated in lithium-ion cells using two types of electrolytes: conventional carbonate-based electrolytes and ionic liquid IL ones. The electrochemical measurements are carried out in the temperature range of 20-60 °C. The stability of sulfate electrodes after cycling is monitored by in-situ Raman spectroscopy and ex-situ XRD and TEM analysis. It is found that sulfate salts store Li⁺ by a hybrid mechanism that depends on the kind of electrolyte used and the recording temperature. Li₂Mn(SO₄)₂ outperforms Li₂Mn₂(SO₄)₃ and displays excellent electrochemical properties at elevated temperatures: at 60 °C, the energy density reaches 280 Wh/kg at a power density of 11,000 W/kg. During cell cycling, there is a transformation of the Li-rich salt, Li₂Mn(SO₄)₂, into a defective Li-poor one, Li₂Mn₂(SO₄)₃, which appears to be responsible for the improved storage properties. The data reveals that Li₂Mn(SO₄)₂ is a prospective candidate for supercapacitor electrode materials at elevated temperatures.

Multi-Scale Characterization of High-Temperature Properties and Thermal Storage Stability Performance of Discarded-Mask-Modified Asphalt

In the context of the global pandemic of COVID-19, the use and disposal of medical masks have created a series of ethical and environmental issues. The purpose of this paper is to study and evaluate the high temperature properties and thermal storage stability of discarded-mask (DM)-modified asphalt from a multi-scale perspective using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and experimental methods. A series of tests was conducted to evaluate the physical, rheological, thermal storage stability and microscopic properties of the samples. These tests include softening point, rotational viscosity, dynamic shear rheology (DSR), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulation. The results showed that the DM modifier could improve the softening point, rotational viscosity and rutting factor of the asphalt. After thermal storage, the DM-modified asphalt produced segregation. The difference in the softening point between the top and bottom of the sample increased from 2.2 °C to 17.1 °C when the DM modifier admixture was increased from 1% to 4%. FT-IR test results showed that the main component of the DM modifier was polypropylene, and the DM-modified asphalt was mainly a physical co-blending process. MD simulation results show that the DM modifier can increase the cohesive energy density (CED) and reduce the fractional free volume (FFV) of asphalt and reduce the binding energy between base asphalt and DM modifier. Multi-scale characterization reveals that DM modifiers can improve the high temperature performance and reduce the thermal storage stability of asphalt. It is noteworthy that both macroscopic tests and microscopic simulations show that 1% is an acceptable dosage level.

High and Low Temperature Performance and Fatigue Properties of Silica Fume/SBS Compound Modified Asphalt

In order to study the high and low temperature properties, and fatigue properties, of silica fume/SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) compound modified asphalt (SFSCMA), dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) are used to study matrix asphalt (MA), silica fume modified asphalt (SFMA) (silica fume (SF) 6%), SBS modified asphalt (SBSMA) (mass ratio of SBS to Matrix asphalt 4%), and silica fume/SBS compound modified asphalt, and the high temperature rheological properties of silica fume/SBS compound modified asphalt with different silica fume additions are also studied. The modification mechanism of SFSCMA was studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The investigation results turn out: along with the increase in the content of SF, the high temperature performance of SFSCMA is improved significantly. When the content of SF is 6%, the high temperature performance is the best. When the content of SF is more than 6%, the high temperature property of SFSCMA is lower than that of SBSMA. It is suggested to choose 6% as the content of SF. Compared with MA, SFMA, and SBSMA, SFSCMA has excellent high temperature performance; compared with MA and SFMA, the low temperature performance of SFSCMA is improved, but it is worse than that of SBSMA. Moreover, when the temperature is lower than -30 °C, its low temperature performance is close to that of MA, or even worse than that of MA. After the compound modification of SF and SBSMA, the fatigue properties of the asphalt are improved, and the fatigue performance of SFSCMA is the best among the four kinds of asphalt. There is a cross-linking force in the network structure of SFSCMA, which restrains the flow of the whole system, so that the stability of the compound modified asphalt is significantly improved, which is favorable to the high temperature performance and fatigue resistance of the compound modified asphalt. However, due to its low mobility, it has a negative impact on the low temperature performance of the compound modified asphalt. In addition, according to previous studies, compared with diatomite, it is proven that SF can reach the same level as diatomite in improving the high temperature performance and fatigue performance of asphalt. Therefore, SF can be used as a good choice of asphalt modifier and can achieve the purpose of waste recycling and environmental protection.

Adaptive Volume Control in Titanium Alloy for High Temperature Performance

With the increase of time, the shrinkage of materials at fixed temperature could enhance the failure of fasteners. We report a potential way to alter the volume/length of alloy automatically through isothermal aging due to pseudospinodal decomposition mechanism. The volume of Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloy first shrunk and then expanded during isothermal aging at 550 °C. It can fit tightly and make up for volume loss. Transmission electron microscopy observation exhibits no obvious coarsening of intragranular α phase with the increasing time. However, composition evolution with time shows a gradual change through energy dispersive spectrometer analysis. The result shows that β stabilizers, V and Fe, are prone to diffuse to the β matrix, while α stabilizers, Al, prefer to segregate to the α phase. First principle calculations suggest that the structure transition for β to α cause the first decrease of volume, and the diffusion of V, Fe and Al is the origin of the later abnormal increase of volume.
