On the diverse roles of fluid dynamic drag in animal swimming and flying

Questions of energy dissipation or friction appear immediately when addressing the problem of a body moving in a fluid. For the most simple problems, involving a constant steady propulsive force on the body, a straightforward relation can be established balancing this driving force with a skin friction or form drag, depending on the Reynolds number and body geometry. This elementary relation closes the full dynamical problem and sets, for instance, average cruising velocity or energy cost. In the case of finite-sized and time-deformable bodies though, such as flapping flyers or undulatory swimmers, the comprehension of driving/dissipation interactions is not straightforward. The intrinsic unsteadiness of the flapping and deforming animal bodies complicates the usual application of classical fluid dynamic forces balance. One of the complications is because the shape of the body is indeed changing in time, accelerating and decelerating perpetually, but also because the role of drag (more specifically the role of the local drag) has two different facets, contributing at the same time to global dissipation and to driving forces. This causes situations where a strong drag is not necessarily equivalent to inefficient systems. A lot of living systems are precisely using strong sources of drag to optimize their performance. In addition to revisiting classical results under the light of recent research on these questions, we discuss in this review the crucial role of drag from another point of view that concerns the fluid-structure interaction problem of animal locomotion. We consider, in particular, the dynamic subtleties brought by the quadratic drag that resists transverse motions of a flexible body or appendage performing complex kinematics, such as the phase dynamics of a flexible flapping wing, the propagative nature of the bending wave in undulatory swimmers, or the surprising relevance of drag-based resistive thrust in inertial swimmers.

Solid-State Nanopore Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer

Analysis of field-controlled dynamics of ionized substances in a vacuum enables mass spectroscopy of particles and molecules. Analogously, here we report that nanoscale tracking of electrophoretically driven fast motions of single nanoparticles allows label-free and nondestructive detection of their mass in liquid. We fine-traced the time-dependent positions of space-filtered regular motions of particles passed through a thin solid-state nanopore by dissecting the associated ionic blockade phenomena under a scope of multiphysics simulations. Characterizing the viscous-drag-mediated exponential decay in the electrophoretic speed of particles ejected into an electrolyte solution from the nanochannel, we demonstrated the discrimination of nanoparticles by the femtogram mass difference. The present method is viable for mass measurement of virtually any object that can be put through the sensing zone, the sensor capability of which may find many applications such as pathogen screening and proteomics.

An approach to identifying the effect of technique asymmetries on body alignment in swimming exemplified by a case study of a breaststroke swimmer

Despite the importance of maintaining good alignment to minimize resistive drag in swimming there is a paucity of literature relating to the effect of technique asymmetries on rotations of the body about a vertical axis (yaw). The purpose of this paper was to present an approach to analyzing the effect of technique asymmetries on rotations in swimming, exemplifying the process with a case study of a breaststroke swimmer. The kinematics and angular kinetics of an elite female international breaststroke swimmer performing a 'fatigue set' of four 100m swims were derived from digitized three-dimensional video data using a 13 segment body model. Personalised anthropometric data required to quantify accurately segment and whole body centres of mass and segmental angular momentum were obtained by the elliptical zone method. Five episodes of torques producing yaw occurred in the stroke cycle sampled for each 100m swim of this swimmer. These torques were linked to bilateral differences in upper limb kinematics during 1) out-sweep; 2) in-sweep; 3) upper limb recovery; and lower limb kinematics during 4) Lower limb recovery and 5) the kick. It has been shown that by quantifying whole body torques, in conjunction with the kinematic movement patterns, the effect of technique asymmetries on body alignment can be assessed. Assessment of individual swimmers in this manner provides a solid foundation for planning interventions in strength, flexibility, and technique to improve alignment and performance. Hydrodynamic frictional performance of fouled panels: a comparative study of different coating types

This research study delves into the hydrodynamic frictional characteristics of fouled panels coated with different types of coatings, investigating how fouling coverage and surface roughness influence drag. The investigation incorporates data on the overall percentage coverage of fouling, as well as roughness measurements obtained through a 3D profilometer. Drag data collected from a flowcell simulation of real-world flow conditions complements these measurements. Notably, the determination of the level of fouling leverages the capabilities of CIE L*a*b as an image analysis method, focusing on the overall coverage rather than individual fouling species. The objective is to illustrate how fouled panels perform under varying flow and coating conditions compared to their clean counterparts. Furthermore, the paper proposes a roughness scaling approach that considers both the percentage coverage and measured areal roughness for each coating type, encompassing both fouled and unfouled areas. This approach provides valuable insights into the combined effects of fouling and surface roughness on hydrodynamic performance, enhancing our understanding of the intricate interplay between these factors.
