Interventional bronchoscopy in adults

INTRODUCTION

The field of interventional pulmonology (IP) is a rapidly maturing subspecialty of pulmonary medicine, which emphasizes advanced diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy for the evaluation and management of central airway obstruction, mediastinal/hilar adenopathy and lung nodules/masses, as well as minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic pleural procedures. Areas covered: This review describes advances in diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopic techniques. Expert commentary: In the past decade, there has been a remarkable growth in available technology and equipment, as well as clinical and translational research efforts focused on patient-centered outcomes. Furthermore, the recent establishment of a uniform accreditation standard for all IP fellowship programs in the United States was an important step in the continued evolution of this subspecialty of pulmonary medicine.

A Direct Bicarbonate Detection Method Based on a Near-Concentric Cavity-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy System

Raman spectroscopy has great potential as a tool in a variety of hydrothermal science applications. However, its low sensitivity has limited its use in common sea areas. In this paper, we develop a near-concentric cavity-enhanced Raman spectroscopy system to directly detect bicarbonate in seawater for the first time. With the aid of this near-concentric cavity-enhanced Raman spectroscopy system, a significant enhancement in HCO₃⁻ detection has been achieved. The obtained limit of detection (LOD) is determined to be 0.37 mmol/L—much lower than the typical concentration of HCO₃⁻ in seawater. By introducing a specially developed data processing scheme, the weak HCO₃⁻ signal is extracted from the strong sulfate signal background, hence a quantitative analysis with R² of 0.951 is made possible. Based on the spectra taken from deep sea seawater sampling, the concentration of HCO₃⁻ has been determined to be 1.91 mmol/L, with a relative error of 2.1% from the reported value (1.95 mmol/L) of seawater in the ocean. It is expected that the near-concentric cavity-enhanced Raman spectroscopy system could be developed and used for in-situ ocean observation in the near future.

Effects of Environmental Gas and Trace Water on the Friction of DLC Sliding with Metals

This paper describes an experimental study on the friction of a-C:H diamond-like carbon (DLC) and ta-C DLC coatings in gas with different concentration of trace water. Pin-on-disk sliding experiments were conducted with DLC coated disks and aluminum pins in hydrogen, nitrogen, and argon. Trace oxygen was eliminated to less than 0.1 ppm, while water in the gas was controlled between 0 and 160 ppm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and laser Raman spectroscopy were used to analyze the transfer films on the metal surfaces. It was found that trace water slightly increased friction in hydrogen gas, whereas trace water caused a significant decrease in the friction coefficient in nitrogen and argon, particularly with a-C:H DLC. The low friction in hydrogen was brought about by the formation of transfer films with structured amorphous carbon, but no differences in the structure and contents of the films were found in the tests with and without trace water. In nitrogen and argon, the low friction with a-C:H DLC was achieved by the gradual formation of transfer films containing structured amorphous carbon, and FT-IR spectra showed that the films contained CH, OH, C–O–C, and C–OH bonds.
