Biological markers for the effects of yoga as a complementary and alternative medicine

From the last few decades, there are increasing incidences of disorders like premature aging, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, and Alzheimer's disease In addition to medication, researchers have found that yoga, a mind-body therapy, can be used as an alternative medicine. Yoga combines specific physical postures, breathing techniques, relaxation and meditation that improve mental and physical health of the body. The purpose of this review is to collate the research evidences claiming health benefits of performing traditional yogic practices. What are the biological and other reliable indicators to suggest that doing asanas, pranayama, and meditation could reduce or treat wide range of life style disorders are discussed. Importantly, these indicators are otherwise used to assess the severity of disorders. In many of the study it has been shown that yoga improves the redox health of body whose imbalance has been well proven to cause many health complications. The impact of yoga on neurodegenerative diseases have revealed that it reverses memory loss, reduce anxiety, depression and stress, the biological indicators of disease. However, most studies have several limitations and therefore further research into yoga is needed to validate these findings.

Glimpse into the Lifestyle of Doctors

Background

Lifestyle disorders are on rise world over. Also, the role of doctors as leaders in propagating healthy lifestyles needs to get a reality check. Aims and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of lifestyle disorders, eating habits, nutrition patterns, and lifestyle of doctors by assessing health-related behaviours considering gender and other relevant demographic parameters. The objectives of the present study are to find out the relationship of lifestyle disorders among doctors and to study lifestyle disorders and related behaviour among male and female doctors and other subgroups.

Materials and Methods

Online survey was conducted using Googledoc in June to August 2021. Descriptive statistical analysis has been carried out in the present study. The student's t-test (two tailed, independent) has been used.

Results

About 50% rated a happiness quotient of 7 and 8. Surgeons had more diabetes and hypertension than physicians. Prevalence of hypertension was more in self-employed males versus males in job. About two-third participants scored ≥ 80% on healthy lifestyle score.

Conclusion

Our results call for a well-thought strategy to overcome the financial and technological hindrances to accurately identify health risk factors and plan corrective interventions. A healthy lifestyle both in terms of diet and exercise should be incorporated into the schedules of doctors.

Exploring the Role of Non-Coding RNAs in the Gut and Skin Microbiome: Implications for Colorectal Cancer and Healthy Longevity

In the last forty years, cancer mortality rates have risen by more than 40%, with colo-rectal cancer (CRC) ranking as the third most common kind worldwide, significantly affected by dietary factors. Restricted access to sophisticated medical treatment and insufficient comprehen-sion of colorectal cancer's biology contribute to its elevated occurrence. Researchers have recog-nized dysbiosis of the gut microbiome as a critical contributor to the development of colorectal cancer, as it influences the expression of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) and subsequent molecular pathways essential for tumor proliferation. Moreover, interactions between gut and skin microbi-ota can impact systemic health and ncRNA regulation, influencing CRC advancement. This study shows how important the gut-skin microbiome axis is in developing colorectal cancer. It suggests that targeting this axis may lead to new treatments, such as changing the microbiome through probiotics, prebiotics, or fecal microbiota transplantation. Nonetheless, we must address obstacles such as population heterogeneity and intricate microbiome-host interactions to facilitate the tran-sition of these medicines into clinical practice. This study seeks to elucidate the roles of dietary treatments, microbiomes, and ncRNAs in the etiology and prevention of colorectal cancer (CRC).

Probiotic foods: can their increasing use in India ameliorate the burden of chronic lifestyle disorders?

Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms which, when ingested in adequate amounts, confer health benefits on the host. Chronic diseases such as diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, coronary artery disease, a variety of chronic inflammatory disorders with an immune basis, and some forms of cancer are increasing in incidence around the world and in India, and may be attributable in part to rapid changes in our lifestyle. There is considerable public interest in India in the consumption of probiotic foods. This brief review summarizes the background of the gut microbiota, the immunological reactions induced by these, the evidence linking the microbiota to health outcomes, and the evidence linking the use of probiotics for amelioration of chronic lifestyle diseases.

Effect of milk and mustard oil consumption: A case study on youth in Delhi-NCR

Background: The diet is a major factor affecting the Body Mass Index (BMI) of an individual. BMI has long been the standard for measuring health and its normal range (18.5-24.9, according to the World Health Organization) is considered to be crucial for maintenance of proper health and to prevent various lifestyle disorders which are considered to have either direct or indirect effects on physical and mental well-being of our youth. Aim: To investigate the correlation between diet patterns and BMI, overall stamina and fatigue levels in the youth population residing in Delhi-NCR region of India. Methods: An online survey was conducted using a carefully designed Google form and the respondents were asked to give details about the basic health parameters and dietary lifestyle. Results: 67% of the respondents who consumed milk were found to have an ideal BMI. 64% of the respondents who consumed mustard oil as their predominant dietary fat showed normal BMI and more than 80% showed lower fatigue levels. Conclusion: Milk and mustard oil consumption is important for maintenance of an ideal BMI. Awareness should be created in the youth to have them as part of their daily diet.

Xenobiotics mediated modulation of gut microbiota and its role in lifestyle diseases: a critical appraisal on exposomics

Gastrointestinal tract of humans provides a niche to thousands of microbes, referred as gut microbiota (GM). GM establishes an intricate relationship with other organs via gut-organ axis, and modulates host health. The structure and functioning of these gut microbes can be influenced by the type of external exposome an individual experiences. Depending upon GM perturbations and host genotype, this can result in variable health implications. On the other hand, the huge arsenal of enzymes possessed by GM can chemically alter the xenobiotic structure. Its consequences can be numerous, including formation of harmful metabolites that cause organ damage, reversal of host detoxification pathways, or favourable health effects. Additionally, GM-mediated bio-transformation of pharmaceuticals can alter their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, potentially yielding variable drug responses, resulting into prolonged or ineffective treatments. To address this bi-facial relationship and the pivotal role of GM, this review incorporates recent in vitro, in vivo, and multiomics studies. It also suggests the need of machine learning approaches to decode the complex host-microbiota-xenobiotics interactions. These knowledge will aid in comprehending recent rise in chronic lifestyle-diseases which poses a huge burden on the health sector, and can also be a learning curve in making formulations and therapies for personalized treatment.
