Physical Properties and Durability of Lime-Cement Mortars Prepared with Water Containing Micro-Nano Bubbles of Various Gases

The paper presents the experimental studies on the effect of the water containing micro-nano bubbles of various gases on the physico-mechanical properties of lime-cement mortars. In total, 7 types of mortars were prepared: with water containing the micro-nano bubbles of O₂, O₃ or CO₂ as 50% or 100% substitute of ordinary mixing water (tap water) and the reference mortar prepared using tap water. In order to determine the influence of water with micro-nano bubbles of gases, the consistency of fresh mortar and the physical properties of hardened mortar, i.e., specific and apparent density, total porosity, water absorption by weight and capillary absorption, were established. The mechanical strength of the considered mortars was studied as well by conducting the tests for flexural and compressive strengths following 14, 28 and 56 days. Reduced workability and capillary absorption were observed in the modified mortars within the range of 0.9-8.5%. The mortars indicated an increase in the flexural strength after 28 days ranging from 3.4% to 23.5% and improved compressive strength in 1.2-31%, in comparison to the reference mortar. The conducted studies indicated increased flexural and compressive strengths along with the share of micro-nano bubbles of gases in the mixing water.

Effect of Micro-Nano Bubble Water and Silica Fume on Properties of C60 Concrete

Micro-nano bubble water (WNBW) in concrete is relatively uncommon due to its newness as a technology. This paper presents the preparation of C60 concrete with 35% fly ash (FA) through WNBW and varying amounts of silica fume (0%, 4%, 7%, and 10% SF). The study examines the impact of WNBW and SF on the working performance, compressive strength, and durability of concrete. The findings indicate that applying WNBW and SF independently or jointly deteriorates the working performance of fresh concrete. However, compared to regular mixing water, WNBW reduces the concrete passing time through the V-funnel, decreasing by 40%, 39.1%, 42.9%, and 50.5% for the four varying SF contents. Furthermore, using WNBW, SF, or both resulted in the increased compressive strength of concrete at 7 days and 28 days, with 7% SF content yielding a 12.2% and 6.6% increase, respectively. Using a combination of WNBW and SF has been shown to decrease the impermeability of concrete effectively. The addition of 4% SF results in the lowest electric flux when using regular mixing water, with a discernible decrease of 30.1% compared to the control group. Conversely, using WNBW as mixing water yields a decrease in electric flux at each SF content, with the maximum decrease being 39.7%. Furthermore, both the single and combined use of these materials can contribute to the reduction in the carbonation resistance of the concrete. C60 concrete mixed with 7% SF and 100% WNBW boasts enhanced frost resistance, as indicated by the mass loss and dynamic elastic modulus loss being the least following freeze-thaw under the same SF content. According to the findings of the tests, there is evidence that the incorporation of 7% SF and 100% WNBW into C60 concrete results in lowered viscosity, a highly advantageous attribute for actual construction. Additionally, this mixture displays impressive compressive strength and durability properties. These results provide technical support regarding the integration of WNBW and SF in C60 concrete.

Additive-Free Method for Enhancing the Volume Phase Transition Rate in Light-Responsive Hydrogels: A Study of Micro-Nano Bubble Water on PNIPAM-co-AAc Hydrogels

Light-responsive hydrogels containing light-thermal convertible pigments have received interest for their possible applications in light-responsive shutters, valves, drug delivery systems, etc. However, their utility is limited by the slow response time. In this study, we investigated the use of micro-nano bubble water as a preparation solvent to accelerate the volume phase transition kinetics of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (PNIPAM-co-AAc) hydrogels. The hydrogels were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and dissolved oxygen (DO) measurements. The mechanical properties, surface morphology, and chemical composition of the hydrogels were analyzed by Young's modulus measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, respectively. The results showed that hydrogels prepared with bubble water changed the volume transition rate by more than two orders of magnitude by simply changing the standing time of the bubble water for only a few hours. The cooperative diffusion coefficients obtained from the light-induced volume transition kinetics correlated linearly with Young's modulus and metastable state swelling ratio. Our results suggest that bubbles act as efficient water channels, thereby modulating the response rate and providing a simple, additive-free method for preparing hydrogels with a wide range of response rates.
