Optically Driven Janus Microengine with Full Orbital Motion Control

Microengines have shown promise for a variety of applications in nanotechnology, microfluidics, and nanomedicine, including targeted drug delivery, microscale pumping, and environmental remediation. However, achieving precise control over their dynamics remains a significant challenge. In this study, we introduce a microengine that exploits both optical and thermal effects to achieve a high degree of controllability. We find that in the presence of a strongly focused light beam, a gold-silica Janus particle becomes confined at the stationary point where the optical and thermal forces balance. By using circularly polarized light, we can transfer angular momentum to the particle, breaking the symmetry between the two forces and resulting in a tangential force that drives directed orbital motion. We can simultaneously control the velocity and direction of rotation of the particle changing the ellipticity of the incoming light beam while tuning the radius of the orbit with laser power. Our experimental results are validated using a geometrical optics phenomenological model that considers the optical force, the absorption of optical power, and the resulting heating of the particle. The demonstrated enhanced flexibility in the control of microengines opens up new possibilities for their utilization in a wide range of applications, including microscale transport, sensing, and actuation.

Template Electrosynthesis of High-Performance Graphene Microengines

Template-prepared graphene/Pt and graphene/Au tubular microengines, with extremely high electrocatalytic activity and propulsion efficiency, are described. The new bubble-propelled graphene/metal micromotors are synthesized rapidly and inexpensively by the direct electrodeposition of graphene oxide (GO) within the conical pores of a polycarbonate template membrane followed by deposition of the inner metal layer. The presence of high number of edges and defects in the graphene layer results in highly reactive microporous Pt or Au catalytic structures. The high catalytic activity leads to an ultrafast bubble propulsion (as high as 170 body lengths/sec) and operation at extremely low levels (0.1%) of the peroxide fuel. The effect of such dramatically enhanced catalytic surface area on the bubble growth and motor speed has been theoretically modeled. The template-prepared graphene-based microengines display distinct moving trajectories, along with long microbubble tails. The fast catalytic locomotion and attractive performance of the new graphene/Pt micromotors hold considerable promise for diverse applications.

Single-Component TiO2 Tubular Microengines with Motion Controlled by Light-Induced Bubbles

In this work, light-controlled bubble-propelled single-component metal oxide tubular microengines have for the first time been demonstrated. For such a simple single-component TiO2 tubular microengine in H2O2 aqueous solution under UV irradiation, when the inner diameter and length of the tube are regulated, the O2 molecules will nucleate and grow into bubbles preferentially on the inner concave surface rather than on the outer surface, resulting in a vital propulsion of the microengine. More importantly, the motion state and speed can be modulated reversibly, fast (the response time is less than 0.2 s) and wirelessly by adjusting UV irradiation. Consequently, the as-developed TiO2 tubular microengine promises potential challenged applications related to photocatalysis, such as "on-the-fly" photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutes and photocatalytic inactivation of bacteria due to the low cost, single component, and simple structure, as well as the facile fabrication in a large-scale.

Bacterial isolation by lectin-modified microengines

New template-based self-propelled gold/nickel/polyaniline/platinum (Au/Ni/PANI/Pt) microtubular engines, functionalized with the Concanavalin A (ConA) lectin bioreceptor, are shown to be extremely useful for the rapid, real-time isolation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria from fuel-enhanced environmental, food, and clinical samples. These multifunctional microtube engines combine the selective capture of E. coli with the uptake of polymeric drug-carrier particles to provide an attractive motion-based theranostics strategy. Triggered release of the captured bacteria is demonstrated by movement through a low-pH glycine-based dissociation solution. The smaller size of the new polymer-metal microengines offers convenient, direct, and label-free optical visualization of the captured bacteria and discrimination against nontarget cells.
