Abstract
Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is one of the mainstays in the treatment of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), but different approaches to monitoring exist. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to compare the effectiveness and complication rate of ventricular drainage (VD) versus intracranial parenchymal (IP) catheters to monitor and treat raised ICP in patients with TBI. Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and the Cochrane Database were searched for articles comparing ICP monitoring-based management with VDs and monitoring with IP monitors through March 2018. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed independently by two authors. Outcomes assessed were mortality, functional outcome, need for decompressive craniectomy, length of stay, overall complications, such as infections, and hemorrhage. Pooled effect estimates were calculated with random effects models and expressed as relative risk (RR) for dichotomous outcomes and mean difference (MD) for ordinal outcomes, with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). Six studies were included: one randomized controlled trial and five observational cohort studies. Three studies reported mortality, functional outcome, and the need for a surgical decompression, and three only reported complications. The quality of the studies was rated as poor, with critical or serious risk of bias. The pooled analysis did not show a statistically significant difference in mortality (RR = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.60-1.36, p = 0.41) or functional outcome (MD = 0.23, 95% CI = 0.67-1.13, p = 0.61). The complication rate of VDs was higher (RR = 2.56, 95% CI = 1.17-5.61, p = 0.02), and consisted mainly of infectious complications; that is, meningitis. VDs caused more complications, particularly more infections, but there was no difference in mortality or functional outcome between the two monitoring modalities. However, the studies had a high risk of bias. A need exists for high quality comparisons of VDs versus IP monitor-based management strategies on patient outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This review examined the effectiveness of telemonitoring versus usual care on self-care behaviors among community-dwelling adults with heart failure. INTRODUCTION Heart failure is a global health crisis. There is a body of high-level evidence demonstrating that telemonitoring is an appropriate and effective therapy for many chronic conditions, including heart failure. The focus has been on traditional measures such as rehospitalizations, length of stay, cost analyses, patient satisfaction, quality of life, and death rates. What has not been systematically evaluated is the effectiveness of telemonitoring on self-care behaviors. Involving patients in self-care is an important heart failure management strategy. INCLUSION CRITERIA This review included studies on adult participants (18 years and older), diagnosed with heart failure (New York Heart Association Class I - IV), who used telemonitoring in the ambulatory setting. Studies among pediatric patients with heart failure, adult patients with heart failure in acute care settings, or those residing in a care facility were excluded. METHODS Eight databases, including CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, MEDLINE, Epistemonikos, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, PsycINFO, and Web of Science were systematically searched for English-language studies between 1997 and 2019. Studies selected for retrieval were assessed by two independent reviewers for methodological quality using critical appraisal checklists appropriate to the study design. Those meeting a priori quality standards of medium or high quality were included in the review. RESULTS Twelve publications were included in this review (N = 1923). Nine of the 12 studies were randomized controlled trials and three were quasi-experimental studies. Based on appropriate JBI critical appraisal tools, the quality of included studies was deemed moderate to high. In a majority of the studies, a potential source of bias was related to lack of blinding of treatment assignment. Telemonitoring programs ranged from telephone-based support, interactive websites, and mobile apps to remote monitoring systems and devices. Self-care outcomes were measured with the European Heart Failure Self-care Behaviour Scale in nine studies and with the Self-care of Heart Failure Index in three studies. Telemonitoring improved self-care behaviors across 10 of these studies, achieving statistical significance. Clinical significance was also observed in nine of the 12 studies. All studies utilized one of two validated instruments that specifically measure self-care behaviors among patients with heart failure. However, in some studies, variation in interpretation and reporting was observed in the use of one instrument. CONCLUSIONS Overall, telemonitoring had a positive effect on self-care behavior among adult, community-dwelling patients with heart failure; however, there is insufficient and conflicting evidence to determine how long the effectiveness lasts. Longitudinal studies are needed to determine the sustained effect of telemonitoring on self-care behaviors. In addition, the limitations of the current studies (eg, inadequate sample size, study design, incomplete statistical reporting, self-report bias) should be taken into account when designing future studies. This review provides evidence for the use of telemonitoring, which is poised for dramatic expansion given the current clinical environment encouraging reduced face-to-face visits. Abstract
A primary goal of improving neonatal cardiopulmonary bypass has been making the circuit smaller and reduce the blood contacting surfaces. As bypass circuit size has decreased, bloodless surgery has become possible even in neonates. Since transfusion guidelines are difficult to construct based on existing literature, these technical advances should be taken advantage of in conjunction with an individualized transfusion scheme, based on monitoring of oxygen availability to the tissues. For the majority of neonatal heart operations, several centers have shifted toward normothermic bypass even for complex neonatal surgeries, in order to avoid the adverse effects of hypothermia. Deep hypothermic circulatory arrest is no longer a necessity but an option, and selective antegrade cerebral perfusion has become common practice; however, technical uncertainties with regard to this technique have to be addressed, based on reliable neurologic monitoring. Maintenance of patient-specific heparin concentrations during bypass is another key goal, since neonates have lower baseline antithrombin concentrations and, therefore, a higher risk for inadequate thrombin inhibition and postoperative bleeding. Due to the immaturity of their hemostatic system, the standard coagulation tests alone are inappropriate to guide hemostatic therapy in neonates. The use of indirect heparin concentration assays and global viscoelastic assays in the operating room is likely to represent the optimal strategy, and requires validation in neonates. Monitoring of global and regional indexes of oxygen availability and consumption on bypass have become possible; however, their use in neonates still has outstanding technical issues which should be addressed and hence needs further validation. Due to the immaturity of the neonatal myocardium, single-shot cold cardioplegia solutions are thought to confer the best myocardial protection; their superiority when compared to more conventional modalities, however, remains to be demonstrated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-management is an important pillar for diabetes control and to achieve it, glucose self-monitoring devices are needed. Currently, there exist several different devices in the market and many others are being developed. However, whether these devices are suitable to be used in resource constrained settings is yet to be evaluated. AIMS To assess existing glucose monitoring tools and also those in development against the REASSURED which have been previously used to evaluate diagnostic tools for communicable diseases. METHODS We conducted a scoping review by searching PubMed for peer-review articles published in either English, Spanish or Portuguese in the last 5 years. We selected papers including information about devices used for self-monitoring and tested on humans with diabetes; then, the REASSURED criteria were used to assess them. RESULTS We found a total of 7 continuous glucose monitoring device groups, 6 non-continuous, and 6 devices in development. Accuracy varied between devices and most of them were either invasive or minimally invasive. Little to no evidence is published around robustness, affordability and delivery to those in need. However, when reviewing publicly available prices, none of the devices would be affordable for people living in low- and middle-income countries. CONCLUSIONS Available devices cannot be considered adapted for use in self-monitoring in resource constraints settings. Further studies should aim to develop less-invasive devices that do not require a large set of components. Additionally, we suggest some improvement in the REASSURED criteria such as the inclusion of patient-important outcomes to increase its appropriateness to assess non-communicable diseases devices.

Abstract
Background Perioperative quantitative monitoring of neuromuscular function in patients receiving neuromuscular blockers has
become internationally recognized as an absolute and core necessity in modern anesthesia care. Because of their kinetic nature, artifactual recordings of acceleromyography-based neuromuscular monitoring devices are not unusual. These generate a great deal of cynicism among anesthesiologists, constituting an obstacle toward their widespread adoption. Through outlier analysis techniques, monitoring devices can learn to detect and flag signal abnormalities. Outlier analysis (or anomaly detection) refers to the problem of finding patterns in data that do not conform to expected behavior. Objective This study was motivated by the development of a smartphone app intended for neuromuscular monitoring based on combined accelerometric and angular hand movement data. During the paired comparison stage of this app against existing acceleromyography monitoring devices, it was noted that the results from both devices did not always concur. This study aims to engineer a set of features that enable the detection of outliers in the form of erroneous train-of-four (TOF) measurements from an acceleromyographic-based device. These features are tested for their potential in the detection of erroneous TOF measurements by developing an outlier detection algorithm. Methods A data set encompassing 533 high-sensitivity TOF measurements from 35 patients was created based on a multicentric open label trial of a purpose-built accelero- and gyroscopic-based neuromuscular monitoring app. A basic set of features was extracted based on raw data while a second set of features was purpose engineered based on TOF pattern characteristics. Two cost-sensitive logistic regression (CSLR) models were deployed to evaluate the performance of these features. The final output of the developed models was a binary classification, indicating if a TOF measurement was an outlier or not. Results A total of 7 basic features were extracted based on raw data, while another 8 features were engineered based on TOF pattern characteristics. The model training and testing were based on separate data sets: one with 319 measurements (18 outliers) and a second with 214 measurements (12 outliers). The F1 score (95% CI) was 0.86 (0.48-0.97) for the CSLR model with engineered features, significantly larger than the CSLR model with the basic features (0.29 [0.17-0.53]; P<.001). Conclusions The set of engineered features and their corresponding incorporation in an outlier detection algorithm have the potential to increase overall neuromuscular monitoring data consistency. Integrating outlier flagging algorithms within neuromuscular monitors could potentially reduce overall acceleromyography-based reliability issues. Abstract
The diagnosis of cryptogenic stroke is made by exclusion. However, current evidence supports the role of atrial fibrillation episodes as a cause of this condition. Prospective data have demonstrated the benefits of long‐term electrocardiographic monitoring to identify atrial fibrillation in association with cryptogenic stroke. This aim of this article was to analyze the contemporary evidence for the possible relationship between atrial fibrillation and cryptogenic stroke and the role of continuous electrocardiographic monitoring to clarify this hypothesis.

Abstract
Introduction Various neurological conditions can impair hand function. Affected individuals cannot fully participate in activities of daily living due to the lack of fine motor control. Neurorehabilitation emphasizes repetitive movement and subjective clinical assessments that require clinical experience to administer. Methods Here, we perform a review of literature focused on the use of hand-worn devices for rehabilitation and assessment of hand function. We paid particular attention to protocols that involve brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) since BCIs are gaining ground as a means for detecting volitional signals as the basis for interactive motor training protocols to augment recovery. All devices reviewed either monitor, assist, stimulate, or support hand and finger movement. Results A majority of studies reviewed here test or validate devices through clinical trials, especially for stroke. Even though sensor gloves are the most commonly employed type of device in this domain, they have certain limitations. Many such gloves use bend or inertial sensors to monitor the movement of individual digits, but few monitor both movement and applied pressure. The use of such devices in BCI protocols is also uncommon. Discussion We conclude that hand-worn devices that monitor both flexion and grip will benefit both clinical diagnostic assessment of function during treatment and closed-loop BCI protocols aimed at rehabilitation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the well-documented health benefits associated with wearable monitoring devices (WMDs), adherence among community-dwelling older adults remains low. By providing guidance on the purpose and benefits of using WMDs, facilitating goal-setting aligned with the device's features, promoting comprehension of the health data captured by the device, and assisting in overcoming technological challenges, peers and health care professionals can potentially enhance older adults' adherence to WMDs. However, the effectiveness of such support mechanisms in promoting adherence to WMDs among older adults remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE The aims of this systematic review were to examine the effects of peer- or professional-led intervention programs designed to improve adherence to WMDs among community-dwelling older adults and to identify the intervention components that may positively influence the effects of the intervention. METHODS We conducted a comprehensive search across 7 electronic databases (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials [CENTRAL], PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, British Nursing Index, Web of Science, and CINAHL) to identify articles published between January 1, 2010, and June 26, 2023. We specifically targeted randomized controlled trials that examined the impact of peer- or professional-led interventions on enhancing adherence to WMDs among individuals aged 60 years and older residing in the community. Two independent reviewers extracted data from the included studies and assessed the potential risk of bias in accordance with the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomized trials, version 2. RESULTS A total of 10,511 studies were identified through the database search. Eventually, we included 3 randomized controlled trials involving 154 community-dwelling older adults. The participants had a mean age of 65 years. Our review revealed that increasing awareness of being monitored and implementing the SystemCHANGE approach, a habit change tool focusing on personal goals and feedback, were effective strategies for enhancing adherence to WMDs among older adults. All of the included studies exhibited a low risk of bias. CONCLUSIONS By collaboratively designing specific goals related to WMDs with health care professionals, including nurses and physicians, older adults exhibited a higher likelihood of adhering to the prescribed use of WMDs. These goal-setting tools provided a framework for structure and motivation, facilitating the seamless integration of WMDs into their daily routines. Researchers should prioritize interventions that target awareness and goal-setting as effective approaches to enhance adherence to WMDs among older adults, thereby maximizing the realization of associated health benefits.

Abstract
It is plausible to assume that healthcare practitioners do not know to what extent bed/body alarms could reduce falls when compared to other fall prevention measures. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the following: Do bed/body alarms reduce the incidence of falls and/or subsequent injuries in a facility that uses such devices, as compared to a facility in which no bed/body alarms were used among the elderly over a 5-month period? A retrospective chart review was conducted in 2 homogenous long-term care facilities. The sample size was N = 160 across the 2 facilities and included 80 residents at each facility. Analysis of the data indicated that there was a total of 94 falls in the facility that used the bed/body alarms, and a total of 70 falls in the facility that did not use the bed/body alarms. Further analysis of the data indicated that there was a slightly higher mean for falls with injuries within the facility that did use the bed/body alarms (M = 18.800) as compared to a mean of 14.0 for the facility that did not use the bed/body alarms (p = .001). The analysis of data suggested that the use of bed/body alarms did not reduce falls within the elderly population. However, since response time to the alarms was not noted, it is plausible to assume that reduction in falls could have been achieved if response time was also studied as an intervening variable.

Abstract
Background The delivery channels and approaches related to cardiac rehabilitation (CR), such as eHealth, mHealth, and telehealth, are evolving. Several studies have identified their effects on patients with coronary heart disease, although no studies have focused on all the approaches collectively. Methods Randomized controlled trials have investigated lipid profiles, through systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and body mass index (BMI). Stata software was used for analysis, while Egger's linear regression test and Begg's funnel plot were also applied. Results Technology-based home CR revealed significantly lower total cholesterol (TC) levels (standardized mean difference (SMD) = -0.19; 95% confidence interval [CI]: [-0.27, -0.11]); triglyceride (TG) levels (SMD = -0.26; 95% CI: [-0.35, 0.17]); low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (SMD = -0.18; 95% CI: [ -0.25, -0.11]); SBP (SMD = -0.26; 95% CI: [-0.33, -0.19]); DBP (SMD = -0.24; 95% CI: [-0.32, -0.16]); BMI (SMD = -0.12; 95% CI: [-0.18, -0.05]), and improved high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels (SMD = 0.22; 95% CI: [0.14, 0.31]). Conclusions Technology-based home CR can be used to lower TC, TG, and LDL levels, alongside the BMI, SBP, and DBP indexes, while also raising HDL levels; thus, its use should be widely promoted.

Abstract
A lot of mileage has been made recently on the long and winding road toward seizure forecasting. Here we briefly review some selected milestones passed along the way, which were discussed at the International Conference for Technology and Analysis of Seizures-ICTALS 2022-convened at the University of Bern, Switzerland. Major impetus was gained recently from wearable and implantable devices that record not only electroencephalography, but also data on motor behavior, acoustic signals, and various signals of the autonomic nervous system. This multimodal monitoring can be performed for ultralong timescales covering months or years. Accordingly, features and metrics extracted from these data now assess seizure dynamics with a greater degree of completeness. Most prominently, this has allowed the confirmation of the long-suspected cyclical nature of interictal epileptiform activity, seizure risk, and seizures. The timescales cover daily, multi-day, and yearly cycles. Progress has also been fueled by approaches originating from the interdisciplinary field of network science. Considering epilepsy as a large-scale network disorder yielded novel perspectives on the pre-ictal dynamics of the evolving epileptic brain. In addition to discrete predictions that a seizure will take place in a specified prediction horizon, the community broadened the scope to probabilistic forecasts of a seizure risk evolving continuously in time. This shift of gears triggered the incorporation of additional metrics to quantify the performance of forecasting algorithms, which should be compared to the chance performance of constrained stochastic null models. An imminent task of utmost importance is to find optimal ways to communicate the output of seizure-forecasting algorithms to patients, caretakers, and clinicians, so that they can have socioeconomic impact and improve patients' well-being.

Abstract
The Nearctic leafhopper Scaphoideus titanus Ball (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) is the main vector of the grapevine flavescence dorée (FD) phytoplasmas in Europe. To limit the impact of pest control activities on human health and the environment, EU legislation is withdrawing a growing number of active ingredients (a.i.), highlighting the need to evaluate alternative S. titanus management tools. In this context, we carried out a three-year (2021-2023) study in Italian vineyards characterized by high S. titanus populations. We compared the effectiveness of different insecticide-based strategies, i.e., targeting only nymphs (2021) or nymphs and adults (2022-2023), by spraying some of the currently allowed products (i.e., flupyradifurone, acetamiprid, sulfoxaflor, etofenprox, deltamethrin, and pyrethrins). The effectiveness of insecticide-based treatments was evaluated in terms of adult catches on yellow sticky traps. Furthermore, to achieve useful insights for optimizing current monitoring tools, we compared S. titanus catches on sticky traps of five different colors (i.e., yellow, green, blue, black, and white), as well as those achieved with two types of currently marketed yellow sticky traps. Results showed that etofenprox, deltamethrin, and sulfoxaflor were the most effective products for reducing S. titanus adult populations (33.64%, 30.30%, and 31.26%, respectively). Yellow and green sticky traps were more attractive to S. titanus adults than white, blue, and black ones. Moreover, a significant difference in capture efficiency was observed between two commercial yellow devices (i.e., tenfold higher catches using Glutor over Super color). Practical implications of our results are discussed in the context of current IPM against this key leafhopper vector of FD.

Abstract
Shoulder pain represents the most frequently reported musculoskeletal disorder, often leading to significant functional impairment and pain, impacting quality of life. Home-based rehabilitation programs offer a more accessible and convenient solution for an effective shoulder disorder treatment, addressing logistical and financial constraints associated with traditional physiotherapy. The aim of this systematic review is to report the monitoring devices currently proposed and tested for shoulder rehabilitation in home settings. The research question was formulated using the PICO approach, and the PRISMA guidelines were applied to ensure a transparent methodology for the systematic review process. A comprehensive search of PubMed and Scopus was conducted, and the results were included from 2014 up to 2023. Three different tools (i.e., the Rob 2 version of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool, the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal tool, and the ROBINS-I tool) were used to assess the risk of bias. Fifteen studies were included as they fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The results showed that wearable systems represent a promising solution as remote monitoring technologies, offering quantitative and clinically meaningful insights into the progress of individuals within a rehabilitation pathway. Recent trends indicate a growing use of low-cost, non-intrusive visual tracking devices, such as camera-based monitoring systems, within the domain of tele-rehabilitation. The integration of home-based monitoring devices alongside traditional rehabilitation methods is acquiring significant attention, offering broader access to high-quality care, and potentially reducing healthcare costs associated with in-person therapy.
