A place for time: the spatiotemporal structure of neural dynamics during natural audition

We use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to analyze neural responses to natural auditory stimuli. We characterize the fMRI time series through the shape of the voxel power spectrum and find that the timescales of neural dynamics vary along a spatial gradient, with faster dynamics in early auditory cortex and slower dynamics in higher order brain regions. The timescale gradient is observed through the unsupervised clustering of the power spectra of individual brains, both in the presence and absence of a stimulus, and is enhanced in the stimulus-locked component that is shared across listeners. Moreover, intrinsically faster dynamics occur in areas that respond preferentially to momentary stimulus features, while the intrinsically slower dynamics occur in areas that integrate stimulus information over longer timescales. These observations connect the timescales of intrinsic neural dynamics to the timescales of information processing, suggesting a temporal organizing principle for neural computation across the cerebral cortex.

Alteration of brain dynamics during dual-task overground walking

When walking in our natural environment, we often solve additional cognitive tasks. This increases the demand of resources needed for both the cognitive and motor systems, resulting in Cognitive-Motor Interference (CMI). A large portion of neurophysiological investigations on CMI took place in static settings, emphasizing the experimental rigor but overshadowing the ecological validity. As a more ecologically valid alternative to treadmill and desktop-based setups to investigate CMI, we developed a dual-task walking scenario in virtual reality (VR) combined with Mobile Brain/Body Imaging (MoBI). We aimed at investigating how brain dynamics are modulated by dual-task overground walking with an additional task in the visual domain. Participants performed a visual discrimination task in VR while standing (single-task) and walking overground (dual-task). Even though walking had no impact on the performance in the visual discrimination task, a P3 amplitude reduction along with changes in power spectral densities (PSDs) were observed for discriminating visual stimuli during dual-task walking. These results reflect an impact of walking on the parallel processing of visual stimuli even when the cognitive task is particularly easy. This standardized and easy to modify VR paradigm helps to systematically study CMI, allowing researchers to control for the impact of additional task complexity of tasks in different sensory modalities. Future investigations implementing an improved virtual design with more challenging cognitive and motor tasks will have to investigate the roles of both cognition and motion, allowing for a better understanding of the functional architecture of attention reallocation between cognitive and motor systems during active behavior.

Short-term prediction through ordinal patterns

Prediction in natural environments is a challenging task, and there is a lack of clarity around how a myopic organism can make short-term predictions given limited data availability and cognitive resources. In this context, we may ask what kind of resources are available to the organism to help it address the challenge of short-term prediction within its own cognitive limits. We point to one potentially important resource: ordinal patterns, which are extensively used in physics but not in the study of cognitive processes. We explain the potential importance of ordinal patterns for short-term prediction, and how natural constraints imposed through (i) ordinal pattern types, (ii) their transition probabilities and (iii) their irreversibility signature may support short-term prediction. Having tested these ideas on a massive dataset of Bitcoin prices representing a highly fluctuating environment, we provide preliminary empirical support showing how organisms characterized by bounded rationality may generate short-term predictions by relying on ordinal patterns.

The role of brain-localized gamma and alpha oscillations in inattentional deafness: implications for understanding human attention

Introduction

The processes involved in how the attention system selectively focuses on perceptual and motor aspects related to a specific task, while suppressing features of other tasks and/or objects in the environment, are of considerable interest for cognitive neuroscience. The goal of this experiment was to investigate neural processes involved in selective attention and performance under multi-task situations. Several studies have suggested that attention-related gamma-band activity facilitates processing in task-specific modalities, while alpha-band activity inhibits processing in non-task-related modalities. However, investigations into the phenomenon of inattentional deafness/blindness (inability to observe stimuli in non-dominant task when primary task is demanding) have yet to observe gamma-band activity.

Methods

This EEG experiment utilizes an engaging whole-body perceptual motor task while carrying out a secondary auditory detection task to investigate neural correlates of inattentional deafness in natural immersive high workload conditions. Differences between hits and misses on the auditory detection task in the gamma (30-50 Hz) and alpha frequency (8-12 Hz) range were carried out at the cortical source level using LORETA.

Results

Participant auditory task performance correlated with an increase in gamma-band activity for hits over misses pre- and post-stimulus in left auditory processing regions. Alpha-band activity was greater for misses relative to hits in right auditory processing regions pre- and post-stimulus onset. These results are consistent with the facilitatory/inhibitory role of gamma/alpha-band activity for neural processing. Additional gamma- and alpha-band activity was found in frontal and parietal brain regions which are thought to reflect various attentional monitoring, selection, and switching processes.

Discussion

The results of this study help to elucidate the role of gamma and alpha frequency bands in frontal and modality-specific regions involved with selective attention in multi-task immersive situations.

ACTION AFFORDANCE AFFECTS PROXIMAL AND DISTAL GOAL-ORIENTED PLANNING

Visual attention is mainly goal-directed and allocated based on the upcoming action. However, it is unclear how far this feature of gaze behavior generalizes in more naturalistic settings. The present study investigates the influence of action affordances on active inference processes revealed by eye movements during interaction with familiar and novel tools. In a between-subject design, a cohort of participants interacted with a VR controller in a low-realism environment; another performed the task with an interaction setup that allowed differentiated hand and finger movements in a high-realism environment. We investigated the differences in odds of fixations and their eccentricity towards the tool parts before action initiation. The results show that participants fixate more on the tool's effector part before action initiation when asked to produce tool-specific movements, especially with unfamiliar tools. These findings suggest that fixations are made in a task-oriented way to plan the distal goals of producing the task and tool-specific actions well before action initiation. Moreover, with more realistic action affordance, fixations were biased toward the tool handle when it was oriented incongruent with the subjects' handedness. We hypothesize that these fixations are made towards the proximal goal of planning the grasp even though the perceived action on the tools is identical for both experimental setups. Taken together, proximal and distal goal-oriented planning is contextualized to the realism of action/interaction afforded by an environment.
