Literature analysis of artificial intelligence in biomedicine

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines, using machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL) and neural networks (NNs). AI enables machines to learn from experience and perform human-like tasks. The field of AI research has been developing fast over the past five to ten years, due to the rise of 'big data' and increasing computing power. In the medical area, AI can be used to improve diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, surgery, drug discovery, or for other applications. Therefore, both academia and industry are investing a lot in AI. This review investigates the biomedical literature (in the PubMed and Embase databases) by looking at bibliographical data, observing trends over time and occurrences of keywords. Some observations are made: AI has been growing exponentially over the past few years; it is used mostly for diagnosis; COVID-19 is already in the top-3 of diseases studied using AI; China, the United States, South Korea, the United Kingdom and Canada are publishing the most articles in AI research; Stanford University is the world's leading university in AI research; and convolutional NNs are by far the most popular DL algorithms at this moment. These trends could be studied in more detail, by studying more literature databases or by including patent databases. More advanced analyses could be used to predict in which direction AI will develop over the coming years. The expectation is that AI will keep on growing, in spite of stricter privacy laws, more need for standardization, bias in the data, and the need for building trust.

Current Progress and Challenges of Using Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Dentistry-A Narrative Review

The concept of machines learning and acting like humans is what is meant by the phrase "artificial intelligence" (AI). Several branches of dentistry are increasingly relying on artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The literature usually focuses on AI models. These AI models have been used to detect and diagnose a wide range of conditions, including, but not limited to, dental caries, vertical root fractures, apical lesions, diseases of the salivary glands, maxillary sinusitis, maxillofacial cysts, cervical lymph node metastasis, osteoporosis, cancerous lesions, alveolar bone loss, the need for orthodontic extractions or treatments, cephalometric analysis, age and gender determination, and more. The primary contemporary applications of AI in the dental field are in undergraduate teaching and research. Before these methods can be used in everyday dentistry, however, the underlying technology and user interfaces need to be refined.

Neural networks: further insights into error function, generalized weights and others

The article is a continuum of a previous one providing further insights into the structure of neural network (NN). Key concepts of NN including activation function, error function, learning rate and generalized weights are introduced. NN topology can be visualized with generic plot() function by passing a "nn" class object. Generalized weights assist interpretation of NN model with respect to the independent effect of individual input variables. A large variance of generalized weights for a covariate indicates non-linearity of its independent effect. If generalized weights of a covariate are approximately zero, the covariate is considered to have no effect on outcome. Finally, prediction of new observations can be performed using compute() function. Make sure that the feature variables passed to the compute() function are in the same order to that in the training NN.

Predicting the Posture of High-Rise Building Machines Based on Multivariate Time Series Neural Network Models

High-rise building machines (HBMs) play a critical role in the successful construction of super-high skyscrapers, providing essential support and ensuring safety. The HBM's climbing system relies on a jacking mechanism consisting of several independent jacking cylinders. A reliable control system is imperative to maintain the smooth posture of the construction steel platform (SP) under the action of the jacking mechanism. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), and Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN) are three multivariate time series (MTS) neural network models that are used in this study to predict the posture of HBMs. The models take pressure and stroke measurements from the jacking cylinders as inputs, and their outputs determine the levelness of the SP and the posture of the HBM at various climbing stages. The development and training of these neural networks are based on historical on-site data, with the predictions subjected to thorough comparative analysis. The proposed LSTM and GRU prediction models have similar performances in the prediction process of HBM posture, with medians R2 of 0.903 and 0.871, respectively. However, the median MAE of the GRU prediction model is more petite at 0.4, which exhibits stronger robustness. Additionally, sensitivity analysis showed that the change in the levelness of the position of the SP portion of the HBM exhibited high sensitivity to the stroke and pressure of the jacking cylinder, which clarified the position of the cylinder for adjusting the posture of the HBM. The results show that the MTS neural network-based prediction model can change the HBM posture and improve work stability by adjusting the jacking cylinder pressure value of the HBM.

Optimal Tracking Control of a Nonlinear Multiagent System Using Q-Learning via Event-Triggered Reinforcement Learning

This article offers an optimal control tracking method using an event-triggered technique and the internal reinforcement Q-learning (IrQL) algorithm to address the tracking control issue of unknown nonlinear systems with multiple agents (MASs). Relying on the internal reinforcement reward (IRR) formula, a Q-learning function is calculated, and then the iteration IRQL method is developed. In contrast to mechanisms triggered by time, an event-triggered algorithm reduces the rate of transmission and computational load, since the controller may only be upgraded when the predetermined triggering circumstances are met. In addition, in order to implement the suggested system, a neutral reinforce-critic-actor (RCA) network structure is created that may assess the indices of performance and online learning of the event-triggering mechanism. This strategy is intended to be data-driven without having in-depth knowledge of system dynamics. We must develop the event-triggered weight tuning rule, which only modifies the parameters of the actor neutral network (ANN) in response to triggering cases. In addition, a Lyapunov-based convergence study of the reinforce-critic-actor neutral network (NN) is presented. Lastly, an example demonstrates the accessibility and efficiency of the suggested approach.
