Non-homogeneous pairing in disordered two-orbital s-wave superconductors

We investigate the effects of non-magnetic disorder in a hybridized two-dimensional two-orbital s-wave superconductor (SC) model. The situation in which electronic orbitals overlap such that the hybridizationVi,jamong them is antisymmetric, under inversion symmetry, was taken into account. The on-site disorder is given by a random impurity potentialW. We find that while the random disorder acts to the detriment of superconductivity, hybridization proceeds to favor it. Accordingly, hybridization plays an important role in two-orbital models of superconductivity, in order to hold the long-range order against the increase of disorder. This makes the present model eligible to describe real materials, since the hybridization may be induced by pressure or doping. In addition, the regime from moderate to strong disorder reveals that the system is broken into SC islands with correlated local order parameters. These correlations persist to distances of several order lattice spacing which corresponds to the size of the SC-Islands.

Complex Rayleigh Waves in Nonhomogeneous Magneto-Electro-Elastic Half-Spaces

The complex Rayleigh waves play an important role in the energy conversion efficiency of magneto-electro-elastic devices, so it is necessary to explore the wave propagation characteristics for the better applications in engineering. This paper modifies the Laguerre orthogonal polynomial to investigate the complex Rayleigh waves propagating in nonhomogeneous magneto-electro-elastic half-spaces. The improved method simplifies the calculation process by incorporating boundary conditions into the constitutive relations, shortens the solving time by transforming the solution of wave equation to an eigenvalue problem, and obtains all wave modes, including real and imaginary and complex wavenumbers. The three-dimensional curves of full frequency spectrum and phase velocities are presented for the better description of the conversion from complex Rayleigh wave modes to real wave ones; besides, the displacement distributions, electric and magnetic potential curves are obtained in thickness and propagation directions, respectively. Numerical results are analyzed and discussed elaborately in three cases: variation of nonhomogeneous coefficients, absence of magnetism, and absence of electricity. The results can be used to optimize and fabricate the acoustic surface wave devices of the nonhomogeneous magneto-electro-elastic materials.

Magnetometer-Based Drift Correction During Rest inIMU Arm Motion Tracking

Real-time motion capture of the human arm in the home environment has many usecases, such as video game and therapy applications. The required tracking can be based onoff-the-shelf Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) with integrated three-axis accelerometers, gyroscopes,and magnetometers. However, this usually requires a homogeneous magnetic field to correctfor orientation drift, which is often not available inside buildings. In this paper, RPMC (RestPose Magnetometer-based drift Correction), a novel method that is robust to long term drift inenvironments with inhomogeneous magnetic fields, is presented. The sensor orientation is estimatedby integrating the angular velocity measured by the gyroscope and correcting drift around the pitchand roll axes with the acceleration information. This commonly leads to short term drift aroundthe gravitational axis. Here, during the calibration phase, the local magnetic field direction for eachsensor, and its orientation relative to the inertial frame, are recorded in a rest pose. It is assumed thatarm movements in free space are exhausting and require regular rest. A set of rules is used to detectwhen the user has returned to the rest pose, to then correct for the drift that has occurred with themagnetometer. Optical validations demonstrated accurate (root mean square error RMS = 6.1), lowlatency (61 ms) tracking of the user's wrist orientation, in real time, for a full hour of arm movements.The reduction in error relative to three alternative methods implemented for comparison was between82.5% and 90.7% for the same movement and environment. Therefore, the proposed arm trackingmethod allows for the correction of orientation drift in an inhomogeneous magnetic field by exploitingthe user's need for frequent rest.

Traffic evacuation time under nonhomogeneous conditions

During many manmade and natural crises such as terrorist threats, floods, hazardous chemical and gas leaks, emergency personnel need to estimate the time in which people can evacuate from the affected urban area. Knowing an estimated evacuation time for a given crisis, emergency personnel can plan and prepare accordingly with the understanding that the actual evacuation time will take longer. Given the urban area to be evacuated, street widths exiting the area's perimeter, the area's population density, average vehicle occupancy, transport mode share and crawl speed, an estimation of traffic evacuation time can be derived. Peak-hour traffic data collected at three, midblock, Mumbai sites of varying geometric features and traffic composition were used in calibrating a model that estimates peak-hour traffic flow rates. Model validation revealed a correlation coefficient of +0.98 between observed and predicted peak-hour flow rates. A methodology is developed that estimates traffic evacuation time using the model.

Advanced pharmacokinetic models based on organ clearance, circulatory, and fractal concepts

Three advanced models of pharmacokinetics are described. In the first class are physiologically based pharmacokinetic models based on in vitro data on transport and metabolism. The information is translated as transporter and enzyme activities and their attendant heterogeneities into liver and intestine models. Second are circulatory models based on transit time distribution and plasma concentration time curves. The third are fractal models for nonhomogeneous systems and non-Fickian processes are presented. The usefulness of these pharmacokinetic models, with examples, is compared.
