Atomistic Simulation of Physical Vapor Deposition of Optical Thin Films

A review of the methods and results of atomistic modeling of the deposition of thin optical films and a calculation of their characteristics is presented. The simulation of various processes in a vacuum chamber, including target sputtering and the formation of film layers, is considered. Methods for calculating the structural, mechanical, optical, and electronic properties of thin optical films and film-forming materials are discussed. The application of these methods to studying the dependences of the characteristics of thin optical films on the main deposition parameters is considered. The simulation results are compared with experimental data.

Optical Protective Window Design and Material Selection Issues in the Multi-Sensor Electro-Optical Surveillance Systems

Multi-sensor imaging systems have a very important role and wide applications in surveillance and security systems. In many applications, it is necessary to use an optical protective window as an optical interface connecting the imaging sensor and object of interest's space; meanwhile an imaging sensor is mounted in a protective enclosure, providing separation from environmental conditions. Optical windows are often used in various optical and electro-optical systems, fulfilling different sometimes very unusual tasks. There are lots of examples in the literature that define optical window design for targeted applications. Through analysis of the various effects that follow optical window application in connection with imaging systems, we have suggested a simplified methodology and practical recommendation for how to define optical protective window specifications in multi-sensor imaging systems, using a system engineering approach. In addition, we have provided initial set of data and simplified calculation tools that can be used in initial analysis to provide proper window material selection and definition of the specifications of optical protective windows in multi-sensor systems. It is shown that although the optical window design seems as a simple task, it requires serious multidisciplinary approach.

Deep-UV laser direct writing of photoluminescent ZnO submicron patterns: an example of nanoarchitectonics concept

Micro- and nanopatterning of metal oxide materials is an important process to develop electronic or optoelectronic devices. ZnO is a material of choice for its semiconducting and photoluminescence properties. In the frame of the nanoarchitectonics concept, we have developed and investigated a new process that relies on direct writing laser patterning in the Deep-UV (DUV) range to prepare photoluminescent microstructures of ZnO at room temperature, under air. This process is based on a synthesis of colloidal ZnO nanocrystals (NCs) with a careful choice of the ligands on the surface to obtain an optimal (i) stability of the colloids, (ii) redissolution of the non-insolated parts and (iii) cross-linking of the DUV-insolated parts. The mechanisms of photocrosslinking are studied by different spectroscopic methods. This room temperature process preserves the photoluminescence properties of the NCs and the wavelength used in DUV allows to reach a sub-micrometer resolution, which opens new perspectives for the integration of microstructures on flexible substrates for optoelectronic applications.

Wide-Angle Tunable Critical Coupling in Nanophotonic Optical Coatings with Low-Loss Phase Change Material

Realizing perfect light absorption in stacked thin films of dielectrics and metals through critical light coupling has recently received intensive research attention. In addition, realizing ultra-thin perfect absorber and tunable perfect absorber in the visible spectrum is essential for novel optoelectronics applications. However, the existing thin film stacks cannot show tunable perfect absorption in a wide-angle range. Here, a tunable perfect absorption from normal incidence to a wide-angle range (0° to 70°) by utilizing a two-layer stack consisting of a high refractive index low-loss dielectric on a high reflecting metal is proposed. This is experimentally demonstrated by depositing a thin layer of low-loss phase change material such as stibnite (Sb₂ S₃ ) on a thin layer of silver. This structure shows tunable perfect absorption with large spectral tunability in the visible wavelength. Furthermore, the absorption enhancement in 2D materials by transferring monolayer molybdenum disulfide on the stack, which shows 96% light absorption with enhanced photoluminescence, is demonstrated. In addition, the thin film stack can work as a scalable phase modulator offering a maximum phase tunability of ≈140° by changing the structural state of Sb₂ S₃ from amorphous to crystalline.

Heat-Resistant Black Insulative Thin Films for Flat-Panel Displays in Al-Doped Ag-Fe-O Systems

Multilayer antireflection (AR) coatings require a material with a large and constant absorption coefficient over the whole visible range and thermal stability. Coatings for use in touch panel displays are also required to be electrically insulative. In this study, 60 mol % Ag-40 mol % (Fe_1-xAl_x)-O (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0) thin films are prepared by pulsed laser deposition, and their optical properties, electric resistance, and thermal stability are clarified by combining the experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Over the visible range, large and constant absorption coefficients are obtained for all compositions. The standard deviations of the absorption coefficients of the x = 0.75 and 1.0 samples are found to be smaller than those of conventional materials like graphite and CrO_x. High sheet resistance (R_sheet > 10⁷ Ω·sq^-1) is also confirmed. It is determined that nanometer-sized Ag dispersed into a matrix, which was confirmed to be ionic Ag in the matrix phase, is responsible for the absorption at a shorter visible light range and insulative nature even at high Ag content. The films with high Al content are stable up to 500 °C. The potential of these black insulative Ag-Al-Fe-O thin films for use as black AR coatings is confirmed by optical simulations with multilayer stacks.

High-Performance Planar Thin Film Thermochromic Window via Dynamic Optical Impedance Matching

Window coatings with dynamic solar transmittance represent an excellent opportunity to reduce building heating and cooling loads, which account for >40% of energy consumed by the built environment. In particular, inorganic vanadium dioxide-based thermochromic coatings offer long lifetimes (>30 years) and can be passively integrated into a window system without additional electronics or power requirements. However, their limited solar modulation depth and wide phase-change hysteresis have traditionally restricted their ability to adapt to changing weather conditions. Here, we derive an optical performance limit for thin film vanadium dioxide coatings, which we find to be far beyond the current literature. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate a solution-processed multilayer thin film coating that uses temperature-dependent optical impedance matching to approach the optical performance limit. The thin film coating demonstrated has a record solar transmittance modulation of 21.8% while maintaining a high level of visible transparency (∼50%) and minimal hysteresis (∼10 °C). This work represents a step-change in thin film thermochromic window coatings and, as a result, establishes planar thin film vanadium dioxide as the most viable morphology for high-performance thermochromic windows.

Polymer Encapsulants Incorporating Light-Guiding Architectures to Increase Optical Energy Conversion in Solar Cells

The fabrication of a new type of solar cell encapsulation architecture comprising a periodic array of step-index waveguides is reported. The materials are fabricated through patterning with light in a photoreactive binary blend of crosslinking acrylate and urethane, wherein phase separation induces the spontaneous, directed formation of broadband, cylindrical waveguides. This microstructured material efficiently collects and transmits optical energy over a wide range of entry angles. Silicon solar cells comprising this encapsulation architecture show greater total external quantum efficiencies and enhanced wide-angle light capture and conversion. This is a rapid, straightforward, and scalable approach to process light-collecting structures, whereby significant increases in cell performance may be achieved.

Hybrid Nanocomposite Films Comprising Dispersed VO2 Nanocrystals: A Scalable Aqueous-Phase Route to Thermochromic Fenestration

Buildings consume an inordinate amount of energy, accounting for 30-40% of worldwide energy consumption. A major portion of solar radiation is transmitted directly to building interiors through windows, skylights, and glazed doors where the resulting solar heat gain necessitates increased use of air conditioning. Current technologies aimed at addressing this problem suffer from major drawbacks, including a reduction in the transmission of visible light, thereby resulting in increased use of artificial lighting. Since currently used coatings are temperature-invariant in terms of their solar heat gain modulation, they are unable to offset cold-weather heating costs that would otherwise have resulted from solar heat gain. There is considerable interest in the development of plastic fenestration elements that can dynamically modulate solar heat gain based on the external climate and are retrofittable onto existing structures. The metal-insulator transition of VO₂ is accompanied by a pronounced modulation of near-infrared transmittance as a function of temperature and can potentially be harnessed for this purpose. Here, we demonstrate that a nanocomposite thin film embedded with well dispersed sub-100-nm diameter VO₂ nanocrystals exhibits a combination of high visible light transmittance, effective near-infrared suppression, and onset of NIR modulation at wavelengths <800 nm. In our approach, hydrothermally grown VO₂ nanocrystals with <100 nm diameters are dispersed within a methacrylic acid/ethyl acrylate copolymer after either (i) grafting of silanes to constitute an amorphous SiO₂ shell or (ii) surface functionalization with perfluorinated silanes and the use of a perfluorooctanesulfonate surfactant. Homogeneous and high optical quality thin films are cast from aqueous dispersions of the pH-sensitive nanocomposites onto glass. An entirely aqueous-phase process for preparation of nanocrystals and their effective dispersion within polymeric nanocomposites allows for realization of scalable and viable plastic fenestration elements.

Suppressing Structural Colors of Photocatalytic Optical Coatings on Glass: The Critical Role of SiO2

The appearance of structural colors on coated-glass is a critical esthetical drawback toward industrialization of photocatalytic coatings on windows for architecture or automobile. Herein we describe a rational approach to suppress the structural color of mesoporous TiO₂-based coatings preserving photoactivity and mechanical stiffness. Addition of SiO₂ as third component is discussed. Ti_xSi_(1-x)O₂ mesoporous coatings were fabricated by one-step liquid deposition process through the evaporation induced self-assembling and characterized by GI-SAXS, GI-WAXS, electron microscopies, and in situ Environmental Ellipsometry Porosimetry. Guided by optical simulation, we investigated the critical role of SiO₂ on the optical responses of the films but also on the structural, mechanical, and photocatalytic properties, important requirements to go toward real applications. We demonstrate that adding SiO₂ to porous TiO₂ allows tuning and suppression of structural colors through refractive index matching and up to 160% increase in mechanical stiffening of the films. This study leads us to demonstrate an example of "invisible" coating, in which the light reflection is angle- and thickness-independent, and exhibiting high porosity, mechanical stiffness, and photoactivity.
