Preparation and Orthogonal Analysis for Dual-Responsive Electrochromic Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Devices

In this work, we provide a fabrication method for dual-responsive electrochromic (EC) polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) devices. The EC PDLC device was developed by combing the PDLC technique and a colored complex formed via a redox reaction without a specific EC molecule in a simple preparation method. The mesogen played dual roles in the device for scattering in the form of microdroplets and participating in the redox reactions. Orthogonal experiments were performed with the acrylate monomer concentration, the ionic salt concentration, and the cell thickness as factors to investigate the electro-optical performance for the achievement of optimized fabrication conditions. The optimized device presented four switchable states modulated by external electric fields. The light transmittance of the device was changed by an alternative current (AC) electric field while the color change was realized by a direct current (DC) electric field. Variations of mesogen and ionic salt species can modulate the color and hue of devices, which solves the disadvantage of a single color for traditional EC devices. This work lays the foundation for realizing patterned multi-colored patterned displays and anti-counterfeiting via screen printing and inkjet printing techniques.

Energy Dissipation and Dynamic Fragmentation of Alkali-Activated Rubber Mortar under Multi-Factor Coupling Effect

Recycled rubber aggregate (RRA) made from ground tire rubber has been promoted for its light weight and shock resistance. The high alkalinity of alkali-activated slag mortar has a modification effect on the surface of RRA. This paper studies the performance of alkali-activated slag mortar using RRA as aggregate (RASM), which has significance for applications in low-carbon building materials. The orthogonal test analysis method was used to analyze the significance and correlation of the main variables of the test. The dynamic energy absorption capacity and crushing state of RASM under the synergistic effect of various factors were studied using the separating Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test system. The energy absorption characteristics and failure modes of RASM were analyzed by SEM and microscopic pore characterization. The results show that the increase of the alkali equivalent of the mix ratio will increase the peak value of the absorption energy of the specimen. When the size of the RRA is between 0.48 mm~0.3 mm, the dynamic energy absorption of the specimen will reach its peak value. Although the increase in the total volume of RRA will reduce the energy absorption capacity of RASM specimens, its crack resistance is enhanced.

An Orthogonal Experimental Study on the Preparation of Cr Coatings on Long-Size Zr Alloy Tubes by Arc Ion Plating

Cr-coated Zr alloys are widely considered the most promising accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) cladding materials for engineering applications in the near term. In this work, Cr coatings were prepared on the surfaces of 1400 mm long N36 cladding tubes using an industrial multiple arc source system. Orthogonal analyses were conducted to demonstrate the significance level of various process parameters influencing the characteristics of coatings (surface roughness, defects, crystal orientation, grain structure, etc.). The results show that the arc current mainly affects the coating deposition rate and the droplet particles on the surface or inside the coatings; however, the crystal preferred orientation and grain structure are more significantly influenced by the gas pressure and negative bias voltage, respectively. Then, the underlying mechanisms are carefully discussed. At last, a set of systemic methods to control the quality and microstructures of Cr coatings are summarized.

The Influence of Audio-Visual Interactions on Psychological Responses of Young People in Urban Green Areas: A Case Study in Two Parks in China

Audio-visual interactions in green spaces are important for mental health and wellbeing. However, the influence of audio-visual interactions on psychological responses is still less clear. This study introduced a new method, namely the audio-visual walk (AV-walk), to obtain data on the audio-visual context, audio-visual experiences, and psychological responses in two typical parks, namely Cloves Park and Music Park in Harbin, China. Some interesting results are as follows: First, based on Pearson’s correlation analysis, sound pressure level and roughness were significantly correlated with psychological responses in Cloves Park (p < 0.05). Second, the results of stepwise regression models showed the impact intensity of acoustic comfort was 1.64–1.68 times higher than that of visual comfort on psychological responses of emotion dimension, while visual comfort was 1.35–1.37 times higher than acoustic comfort on psychological responses of cognition dimension in Music Park. In addition, an orthogonal analysis diagram explained the influence of audio-visual interactions on psychological responses of young people. The audio-visual context located beside the waterscape with a relatively higher level of acoustic and visual comfort was the most cheerful (2.60), relaxed (2.45), and energetic (2.05), while the audio-visual context close to an urban built environment tended to be both acoustically and visually uncomfortable, and the psychological state was decreased to the most depressed (−0.25), anxious (−0.75), fatigued (−1.13) and distracted (−1.13).

Approaches for the quantitative analysis of oxidation state in cerium oxide nanomaterials

Cerium oxide nanomaterials (nanoceria, CNMs) are receiving increased attention from the research community due to their unique chemical properties, most prominent of which is their ability to alternate between the Ce3+ and Ce4+ oxidation states. While many analytical techniques and methods have been employed to characterize the amounts of Ce3+ and Ce4+ present (Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio) within nanoceria materials, to-date no studies have used multiple complementary analytical tools (orthogonal analysis) with technique-independent oxidation state controls for quantitative determinations of the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio. Here, we describe the development of analytical methods measuring the oxidation states of nanoceria analytes using technique-independent Ce3+ (CeAlO3:Ge) and Ce4+ (CeO2) control materials, with a particular focus on x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) approaches. The developed methods were demonstrated in characterizing a suite of commercial nanoceria products, where the two techniques (XPS and EELS) were found to be in good agreement with respect to Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio. Potential sources of artifacts and discrepancies in the measurement results were also identified and discussed, alongside suggestions for interpreting oxidation state results using the different analytical techniques. The results should be applicable towards producing more consistent and reproducible oxidation state analyses of nanoceria materials.

Optimized Calibration Procedure of the Damage Parameters of AA6082-T6 Sheets

The constitutive equation of AA6082-T6 sheets is investigated by an extended Rousselier damage model. Previous research is mainly comprised of single-pull test specimens, notched tensile specimens, tensile specimens with a hole, and shear specimens. To decrease the natural material errors, a new specimen is used. In this paper, a clinched joint is regarded as a specimen to calibrate the initial void volume fraction kω and the shear damage parameter f0 by using the orthogonal analysis method, which can reduce the simulation times and accuracy. It also reveals that the initial void volume fraction f0 affects the void volume fraction in the neck and the groove of the clinched joint, and the shear damage parameter kω affects just the void volume fraction f in the neck of the clinched joint. It checks the force-displacement curve, shape of the clinched joint, and the fracture location, and approves that these damage parameters can describe the deformation process, fracture location, and shape of the clinched joint.
