Is the treatment for osteochondrolipomas and lipomas the same? Case report and review of the literature on osteochondrolipoma of chest wall

Lipomas containing bony and chondroid areas are called osteochondrolipomas. Osteochondrolipomas are extremely rare and their treatment is not known exactly. In this article, we report a 41-year-old male patient who had a 45 mm long subcutaneous mass in the chest wall which was detected 15 years before. When the mass started to grow recently, the patient was admitted to our hospital. Total excision was performed to the mass of the chest wall. According to the histopathological examination of the material, the lesion was an osteochondrolipoma. It might be challenging to diagnose such rare osteochondrolipomas in the tru-cut or small biopsy specimens. Differential diagnosis may be challenging clinically, radiologically, and histopathologically. To our knowledge, this is the fifth case of a totally excised osteochondrolipoma of the chest wall which was reported in the literature.

Osteochondrolipoma of the Mandible

Objective: Lipomas are very common benign tumors located in any part of the body in which fat is normally present, but lipomas containing both osseous and cartilaginous elements are rare. Methods: A case of osteochondrolipoma in a 72-year-old man is reported. The tumor in the mental region was 2×1.5×1.5 cm. Results: After resection of the tumor, there has been no recurrence during the 6-month postoperative follow-up. Histological examination confirmed the definitive diagnosis. Conclusions: Osteochondrolipoma is an extremely unusual lesion that should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of soft-tissue tumors.

Scapular osteochondrolipoma: Imaging features with pathological correlation

Osteochondrolipoma is an extremely rare histological variant of lipoma with osseous and cartilaginous differentiation. The present study reports an unusual case of an osteochondrolipoma occurring in the left scapular region of a 49-year-old male. The physical examination revealed a 3-cm, hard, non-tender and minimally mobile mass. Plain radiography revealed a faintly ossified soft-tissue mass without evidence of bone erosion. Computed tomography (CT) confirmed the presence of a lesion and the normal appearance of the scapula. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a well-circumscribed subcutaneous mass with an almost homogeneous high signal intensity on the T1- and T2-weighted sequences. Contrast-enhanced fat-suppressed T1-weighted sequences demonstrated a faint peripheral and septal enhancement of the mass. A marginal excision of the tumor was performed. Histologically, the tumor was predominantly composed of mature adipocytes mixed with thin trabeculae of mature bone. In addition, small amounts of mature hyaline cartilage and osteoid were identified in the periphery of the lesion. Based on these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as an osteochondrolipoma. The patient demonstrated no evidence of local recurrence within six months of follow-up. Although rare, osteochondrolipoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis of a well-defined, calcified/ossified, subcutaneous mass in the scapular region.

Parosteal osteochondrolıpoma of the mandıble

Osteochondrolipoma is a rare benign soft tissue neoplasm. It is occasionally considered to be a variant of adipose tissue neoplasm ‘lipoma’ showing multiple differentiation pathways of pluripotent stem cells. As with the lipomas they can be seen at any location and show cartilagenous and osteoid differentiation when located parosteally. We present a case of osteochondrolipoma located at the symphysis of the mandible. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an oral osteochondrolipoma associated with parosteal localization.

Osteochondrolipoma of the submandibular region: a case report and review of the literature

Lipoma is an extremely common and ubiquitous benign soft tissue tumor composed of mature adipose tissue, with frequent differentiation towards other mesenchymal elements such as blood vessels, fibrous tissue, or muscle. They are typically slow-growing, encapsulated, superficial or deep, and have a wide range in size depending on their location. The presence of cartilage or bone is very rare, with most reported cases in the head and neck area. We report the case of an osteochondrolipoma of the submandibular region with associated benign bone marrow elements, with a review of the literature and discussion of the differential diagnosis.
