On the division of labor in the maintenance of intersubjectivity: insights from the study of other-initiated repair in Vietnamese

Few ideas have figured more centrally in the history of social theory than that of the division of labor. Here we ask whether conversational interaction, like other forms of social activity, exhibits a division of labor and, if so, what functions this serves and how it might be understood in relation to the theories of Marx and Durkheim. We begin by noting that, though conversational participants actively work to achieve and sustain understanding, much of the time this work is invisible and only its products are displayed in the form of sequentially fitted next turns at talk. However, in sequences of other-initiated repair, the work involved in the maintenance of intersubjectivity rises to the surface. On these occasions, we can see and thus describe what participants do to achieve and sustain what they take to be adequate understanding. In our data, which consist of video recordings of casual conversations among Vietnamese same-generation peers, participants continuously display an orientation to relations of relative seniority through the selection of terms used to accomplish interlocutor reference. This pervasive orientation is also reflected in practices of repair initiation. Specifically, seniors regularly initiate repair with so-called "open class" forms such as "huh?" and "ha?" which display a minimal grasp of the talk targeted, require little effort to produce and, at the same time, push responsibility for resolving the problem onto the trouble source speaker (i.e., the junior member of the dyad). In contrast, juniors often initiate repair of a senior participant's talk by displaying a detailed understanding of what has been said, either in the form of a repeat or a reformulation, and inviting the senior to confirm. We suggest then that this asymmetry in the distribution of initiation practices reflects a "division of intersubjective labor". We conclude with some thoughts on the theoretical implications of our findings and relate them not only to the theories of Marx and Durkheim but also to the writings of feminist sociolinguists who sought to describe the way in which women seem to be burdened more than men with what Fishman called "interactional shitwork."

Right hemisphere damage and other-initiated repair in everyday conversation

Right hemisphere damage causes communication problems in conversation, but its precise effects have been challenging to study. As such, there are few clinical assessments focused on right hemisphere damage and conversation, and essentially no evidence-based interventions. Other-initiated repair sequences (i.e. moments when a problem of hearing or understanding are indicated and addressed) are a well-described aspect of interaction, with a large body of empirical research evidencing their organisation. Because of the communicative activities they implicate, these sequences may also be a site in which the symptoms of right hemisphere communication disorder become salient. This study explores the organisation of other-initiated repair sequences in interactions involving people with right hemisphere communication disorder using conversation analysis. Two people with right hemisphere communication disorder caused by stroke and four of their familiar conversation partners were recorded in triadic interactions; 104 minutes of recordings were collected, and 28 other-initiated repair sequences were subjected to analysis. This included other-initiations of repair produced by participants with right hemisphere communication disorder, and other-initiations of repair addressed to them. Participants with right hemisphere communication disorder were found to implement efficacious other-initiations of repair, to recognise core aspects of the trouble sources indicated in their own turns, and to design suitable repair solutions. That is, their inferences about communication problems were successful. However, one participant with right hemisphere communication disorder displayed difficulty managing aspects of the repair sequences, with her conversation partners also orienting towards her difficulties. It is argued that her difficulties were driven by problems dealing with multifaceted and ambiguous conversational moments. These observed difficulties suggest that other-initiated repair sequences may be valuable for detecting right hemisphere communication disorder, and highlight the possible role of conversational sampling in clinical assessment.

Conversation breakdowns in the audiology clinic: the importance of mutual gaze

BACKGROUND

Conversational breakdowns are a persistent concern for older adults with hearing impairment (HI). Previous studies in experimental settings have investigated potential causes of breakdowns in conversations with a person with HI, and effective strategies for repairing these breakdowns. However, little research has explored the causes of hearing-related communication breakdowns, and their repairs, in extended, naturally occurring conversations in a healthcare setting.

AIMS

To analyse systematically instances of clients' initiations of repair within video-recorded initial audiology appointments, and to examine the interactional environment in which they occurred.

METHODS & PROCEDURES

Participants included 26 audiologists and their older adult clients (aged 55+ years). Companions were present in 17 of the 63 appointments. Conversation analysis (CA) was used to examine the video-recorded audiology appointments with older adults with HI. The corpus was systematically analysed for all instances of 'other-initiated repair' by clients (initiation of repair targeting the prior speakers' turn). A collection of 51 instances of other-initiated repair were identified. These instances were analysed in detail for: (1) the interactional environment in which they occurred; (2) the strategy by which the client initiated repair; and (3) the strategies used by the audiologist to repair the communication breakdown.

OUTCOMES & RESULTS

In 76% (n = 39) of the 51 cases of other-initiated repair from the client, there was a lack of mutual gaze between participants (i.e., either the audiologist or the client were looking away or facing in another direction during the prior turn). More specifically, many of these instances occurred when the audiologist was speaking to the client while multitasking. Audiologists used multiple-repair strategies in their responsive turn in an attempt to repair the communication breakdown efficiently.

CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS

These findings, from extended, naturally occurring conversations with older adults with HI in clinic settings, highlight the importance of face-to-face communication even in quiet one-to-one settings. Clinicians should remain aware of their movements and gaze when speaking to clients during appointments. The findings also provide further support for the importance of communication programs in hearing rehabilitation.

The intersection of turn-taking and repair: the timing of other-initiations of repair in conversation

The transitions between turns at talk in conversation tend to occur quickly, with only a slight gap of ∼100–300 ms between them. This estimate of central tendency, however, hides a wealth of complex variation, as a number of factors, such as the type of turns involved, have been shown to influence the timing of turn transitions. This article considers one specific type of turn that does not conform to the statistical trend, namely turns that deal with troubles of speaking, hearing, and understanding, known as other-initiations of repair (OIR). The results of a quantitative analysis of 169 OIRs in face-to-face conversation reveal that the most frequent cases occur after gaps of ∼700 ms. Furthermore, OIRs that locate a source of trouble in a prior turn specifically tend to occur after shorter gaps than those that do not, and those that correct errors in a prior turn, while rare, tend to occur without delay. An analysis of the transitions before OIRs, using methods of conversation analysis, suggests that speakers use the extra time (i) to search for a late recognition of the problematic turn, (ii) to provide an opportunity for the speaker of the problematic turn to resolve the trouble independently, and (iii) to produce visual signals, such as facial gestures. In light of these results, it is argued that OIRs take priority over other turns at talk in conversation and therefore are not subject to the same rules and constraints that motivate fast turn transitions in general.
