Reducing Interfacial Losses in Solution-Processed Integrated Perovskite-Organic Solar Cells

Low bandgap organic semiconductors have been widely employed to broaden the light response range to utilize much more photons in the inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the serious charge recombination at the heterointerface contact between perovskite and organic semiconductors usually leads to large energy loss and limits the device performance. In this work, a titanium chelate, bis(2,4-pentanedionato) titanium(IV) oxide (C10H14O5Ti), was directly used as an interlayer between the perovskite layer and organic bulk heterojunction layer for the first time. Impressively, it was found that C10H14O5Ti can not only increase the surface potential of perovskite films but also show a positive passivation effect toward the perovskite film surface. Drawing from the above function, a smoother perovskite active layer with a higher work function was realized upon the use of C10H14O5Ti. As a result, the C10H14O5Ti-modified integrated devices show lower interfacial loss and obtain the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 20.91% with a high voltage of 1.15 V. The research offers a promising strategy to minimize the interfacial loss for the preparation of high-performance perovskite solar cells.

Multifunctional Heterocyclic-Based Spacer Cation for Efficient and Stable 2D/3D Perovskite Solar Cells

Two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite materials have shown the enormous potential to achieve both efficient and stable photovoltaic devices for commercial applications. Unfortunately, the single function of spacer cations limits their further improvements in efficiency to reach values as high as those of 3D perovskites. Herein, we developed a new-type multifunctional heterocyclic-based spacer cation of 2-(methylthio)-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole (MTIm⁺) to achieve a synchronous improvement of efficiency and stability for 2D/3D perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Owing to the presence of special chemical groups (imidazole and methylthio), strong interactions have been found between MTIm⁺ and the 3D perovskite component, leading to an excellent passivation effect. More important, at the initial stage of crystallization, uniform nucleation distribution would be generated around the spacer cation, which is helpful for improved crystallinity and reduced growth defects. The smaller layer space compared to that of cations based on aromatic hydrocarbons caused effective carrier transfer between inorganic layers in 2D/3D perovskites. As a result, the 2D/3D (n = 30) PSCs based on MTIm exhibit a champion PCE up to 21.25% with a high V_oc of 1.14 V. Besides, the 2D/3D perovskite devices have realized dramatically enhanced humidity and thermal stability, maintaining 94% of the starting PCE enduring aging at about 50% RH for 2880 h and at 85 °C for 360 h, respectively. We believe that it would provide a significant strategy to further promote the photovoltaic performances and the long-term stability of 2D/3D perovskite devices toward future practical applications.

Dopant-Free Organic Hole-Transporting Material for Efficient and Stable Inverted All-Inorganic and Hybrid Perovskite Solar Cells

Designing new hole-transporting materials (HTMs) with desired chemical, electrical, and electronic properties is critical to realize efficient and stable inverted perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) with a p-i-n structure. Herein, the synthesis of a novel 3D small molecule named TPE-S and its application as an HTM in PVSCs are shown. The all-inorganic inverted PVSCs made using TPE-S, processed without any dopant or post-treatment, are highly efficient and stable. Compared to control devices based on the commonly used HTM, PEDOT:PSS, devices based on TPE-S exhibit improved optoelectronic properties, more favorable interfacial energetics, and reduced recombination due to an improved trap passivation effect. As a result, the all-inorganic CsPbI₂ Br PVSCs based on TPE-S demonstrate a remarkable efficiency of 15.4% along with excellent stability, which is the one of the highest reported values for inverted all-inorganic PVSCs. Meanwhile, the TPE-S layer can also be generally used to improve the performance of organic/inorganic hybrid inverted PVSCs, which show an outstanding power conversation efficiency of 21.0%, approaching the highest reported efficiency for inverted PVSCs. This work highlights the great potential of TPE-S as a simple and general dopant-free HTM for different types of high-performance PVSCs.

Pyrite-Based Cr(VI) Reduction Driven by Chemoautotrophic Acidophilic Bacteria

Cr(VI) is considered as a priority pollutant, and its remediation has attracted increasing attention in the environmental area. In this study, the driving of pyrite-based Cr(VI) reduction by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was systematically investigated. The results showed that pyrite-based Cr(VI) reduction was a highly proton-dependent process and that pH influenced the biological activity. The passivation effect became more significant with an increase in pH, and there was a decrease in Cr(VI) reduction efficiency. However, Cr(VI) reduction efficiency was enhanced by inoculation with A. ferrooxidans. The highest reduction efficiency was achieved in the biological system with a pH range of 1–1.5. Pyrite dissolution and reactive site regeneration were promoted by A. ferrooxidans, which resulted in the enhanced effect in Cr(VI) reduction. The low linear relevancy between pH and Cr(VI) dosage in the biological system indicated a complex interaction between bacteria and pyrite. Secondary iron mineral formation in an unfavorable pH environment inhibited pyrite dissolution, but the passivation effect was relieved under the activity of A. ferrooxidans due to S/Fe oxidization. The balance between Cr(VI) reduction and biological activity was critical for sustainable Cr(VI) reduction. Pyrite-based Cr(VI) remediation driven by chemoautotrophic acidophilic bacteria is shown to be an economical and efficient method of Cr(VI) reduction.

Effect of Fullerene Passivation on the Charging and Discharging Behavior of Perovskite Solar Cells: Reduction of Bound Charges and Ion Accumulation

Ion accumulation of organometal halide perovskites (OHPs) induced by electrode polarization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) under illumination has been intensely studied and associated with a widely observed current-voltage hysteresis behavior. This work is dedicated to the investigation of the behavior of charged species at the compact TiO₂/OHP interface with respect to electrode polarization in PSC devices. By providing a comprehensive discussion of open-circuit voltage ( V_OC) buildup and V_OC decay under illumination and in the dark for the PSCs modified with [6,6]-phenyl-C₆₁ butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) at the TiO₂/OHP interface and their corresponding electrochemical impedance spectroscopies (EISs), a justified mechanism is proposed attempting to elucidate the dynamics of interfacial species with respect to the time and frequency domains. Our results demonstrate that the retarded V_OC buildup and decay observed in PSC devices are related to the formation of bound charges in TiO₂, which is essential to neutralize the oppositely charged ions accumulating at the OHP side. Besides, inserting a thicker PCBM at the TiO₂/OHP interface as a passivation layer can alleviate the electrode polarization more efficiently as verified by the low dielectric constant measured from EIS. Moreover, photoluminescence measurements indicate that PCBM at the TiO₂/OHP interface is capable of passivating a trap state and improving charge transfer. However, with respect to the time scale investigated in this work, the reduction of the hysteresis behavior on a millisecond scale is more likely due to less bound charge formation at the interface rather than shallow trap-state passivation by PCBM. After all, this work comprehensively demonstrates the interfacial properties of PSCs associated with PCBM passivation and helps to further understand its impact on charging/discharging as well as device performance.

Stable High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells via Grain Boundary Passivation

The trap states at grain boundaries (GBs) within polycrystalline perovskite films deteriorate their optoelectronic properties, making GB engineering particularly important for stable high-performance optoelectronic devices. It is demonstrated that trap states within bulk films can be effectively passivated by semiconducting molecules with Lewis acid or base functional groups. The perovskite crystallization kinetics are studied using in situ synchrotron-based grazing-incidence X-ray scattering to explore the film formation mechanism. A model of the passivation mechanism is proposed to understand how the molecules simultaneously passivate the Pb-I antisite defects and vacancies created by under-coordinated Pb atoms. In addition, it also explains how the energy offset between the semiconducting molecules and the perovskite influences trap states and intergrain carrier transport. The superior optoelectronic properties are attained by optimizing the molecular passivation treatments. These benefits are translated into significant enhancements of the power conversion efficiencies to 19.3%, as well as improved environmental and thermal stability of solar cells. The passivated devices without encapsulation degrade only by ≈13% after 40 d of exposure in 50% relative humidity at room temperature, and only ≈10% after 24 h at 80 °C in controlled environment.
