Satisfaction of surgical patients with perioperative nursing care in a Spanish tertiary care hospital

OBJECTIVE

Although numerous studies have assessed patient satisfaction in diverse settings, in the realm of nursing surgical care, standardization of measurement for patient experience and satisfaction is lacking. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the satisfaction of surgical patients with perioperative nursing care.

METHOD

A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted. Sociodemographic characteristics and clinical data were recorded. Patient satisfaction was measured with a modified version of the La Monica-Oberst Patient Satisfaction Scale (LOPSS-12).

RESULTS

150 patients (73 women, 49% and 77 men; 51%) completed the survey. The mean age was 63 years (standard deviation, 16 years). The mean overall satisfaction score on the La Monica-Oberst Patient Satisfaction Scale was 3.17 (standard deviation, 0.21). The scale showed adequate content validity (Lawshe's Content Validity Index was 0.76) and moderate reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.70). Two variables-patient sex and the presence of comorbidities-were significantly associated with overall satisfaction: men and patients with comorbidities were more satisfied with the care received. Patients with university studies were significantly more likely than patients with less education to consider nurses "impatient," but also considered the nurses' advice to be "useful." Patients with hospital-acquired complications were more likely to perceive nurses to be "more interested in completing tasks than in listening," although they also felt that nurses worked "conscientiously."

CONCLUSION

Overall, patient satisfaction with perioperative nursing care was good. This study identified several areas of nursing care in need of improvement, particularly the need to spend more time with patients and to keep them better informed about the perioperative process. The modified La Monica-Oberst Patient Satisfaction Scale is suitable for measuring surgical patient satisfaction with perioperative nursing care. The findings presented here may be of value to nursing administrators, educators, and nursing care providers to improve patient satisfaction and to develop strategies to prevent patient dissatisfaction.

Patient Satisfaction Scale for Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients: Development and Psychometric Properties

Objective: Patients' appraisal of health care delivery system and services during COVID-19 could be an important yardstick for hospital administration and policy makers. The study attempted to develop and test the psychometric properties of a new patient satisfaction scale for COVID-19 patients. Methods: A total of 446 COVID-19-hospitalized COVID-19 patients in a tertiary care designated COVID-19 care hospital constituted the sample. Factor structure of scale was obtained using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Internal consistency, split-half reliability, and validity (e.g., content, convergent, and divergent) were also evaluated. Results: Item reduction resulted in a 21-item scale consisting of three factors, namely COVID-19-focused treatment facility, COVID-19-appropriate hospital facility, and COVID-19-specific daily needs service facility. It demonstrated excellent internal consistency and reliability (Cronbach's alpha [α]: 0.93; Split-half reliability: 0.90), excellent content validity, and adequate convergent and divergent validity. The scale had no floor effects. Inter-index correlations were significant. To our knowledge: this scale is the first such psychometrically robust self-rated scale for patients' perception about hospital services during COVID-19. Available in both Hindi and English languages, the scale provides a quick measure of patient experience regarding CCOVID-19-specific hospital services.

Prehospital emergency care patient satisfaction scale [PECPSS] for care provided by emergency medical teams: Scale development and validation

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate an emergency medical technician (EMT) care patient satisfaction scale to measure patient satisfaction with prehospital emergency care. To date, patient satisfaction surveys of EMTs have been performed subjectively, e using each facility's questionnaire, without the use of a validated patient satisfaction scale. However, no specific scale has been devised to assess patient satisfaction with EMTs. The study population comprised patients who used an ambulance between November 2020 and May 2021 (N = 202). A survey instrument was administered to participants who provided informed consent. In the process of validating the patient satisfaction scale, an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of construct validity was performed. The results of the EFA showed a factor structure consisting of five factors: "teamwork", "explanation and communication", "physical treatment and psychological support", "quickness of transport", and "environment in the ambulance". In addition, domain and summary scores showed good internal reliability (Cronbach's range = 0.82-0.94). The patient satisfaction scale developed in this study was designed and validated considering the role of EMTs and patients' needs for prehospital care. This scale may be useful in the development of assessments and interventions to improve patient satisfaction with EMTs.
