Tailoring the Coordination Micro-Environment in Nanotraps for Efficient Platinum/Palladium Separation

Recovering platinum group metals from secondary resources is crucial to meet the growing demand for high-tech applications. Various techniques are explored, and adsorption using porous materials has emerged as a promising technology due to its efficient performance and environmental beingness. However, the challenge lies in effectively recovering and separating individual platinum group metals (PGMs) given their similar chemical properties. Herein, a breakthrough approach is presented by sophisticatedly tailoring the coordination micro-environment in a series of aminopyridine-based porous organic polymers, which enables the creation of platinum-specific nanotraps for efficient separation of binary PGMs (platinum/palladium). The newly synthesized POP-o2NH2-Py demonstrates record uptakes and selectivity toward platinum over palladium, with the amino groups adjacent to the pyridine moieties being vital in improving platinum binding performance. Further breakthrough experiments underline its remarkable ability to separate platinum and palladium. Spectroscopic analysis reveals that POP-o2NH2-Py offers a more favorable coordination fashion to platinum ions compared to palladium ions owing to the greater interaction between N and Pt4+ and stronger intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the amino groups and four coordinating chlorines at platinum. These findings underscore the importance of fine-tuning the coordination micro-environment of nanotraps through subtle modifications that can greatly enhance the selectivity toward the desired metal ions.

Quantifying Platinum and Palladium in Solid Ore Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Assisted by the Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIBS-LIF) Technique

The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy assisted by laser-induced fluorescence (LIBS-LIF) in a two-step process was used to measure the concentration of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) by surface analysis of a solid ore core from the Lac des Iles mine followed by analysis of the same core that was pulverized and compacted. This work focuses mainly on the measurement of Pt since the case of Pd has been extensively discussed in previous work. The excitation of Pt is performed at 235.71 nm with fluorescence emission observed near 269.84 nm. Calibration was performed with synthetic samples prepared from the same ore as the samples studied and the calibration curve shows good linearity in Pt content over several orders of magnitude. A limit of detection (LOD) of approximately 0.15 parts per million (ppm) over an average of 200 laser shots was demonstrated. In contrast, conventional LIBS provides a LOD of about 21 ppm over an average of 200 laser shots due to low signal-to-noise ratio and spectral interference from other elements and does not meet the requirements for estimating the average Pt concentration in the ore. The Pt concentrations obtained using LIBS-LIF on solid ore are generally in good agreement with those obtained in its pulverized and compacted form, as well as with laboratory measurements made by conventional chemical methods. However, the comparison of the results obtained for Pd using LIBS-LIF with the laboratory showed a less satisfactory agreement, probably due to its more inhomogeneous distribution in the ore.

The trisulfur radical ion S3 •- controls platinum transport by hydrothermal fluids

Platinum group elements (PGE) are considered to be very poorly soluble in aqueous fluids in most natural hydrothermal-magmatic contexts and industrial processes. Here, we combined in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and solubility experiments with atomistic and thermodynamic simulations to demonstrate that the trisulfur radical ion S₃ ^•- forms very stable and soluble complexes with both Pt^II and Pt^IV in sulfur-bearing aqueous solution at elevated temperatures (∼300 °C). These Pt-bearing species enable (re)mobilization, transfer, and focused precipitation of platinum up to 10,000 times more efficiently than any other common inorganic ligand, such as hydroxide, chloride, sulfate, or sulfide. Our results imply a far more important contribution of sulfur-bearing hydrothermal fluids to PGE transfer and accumulation in the Earth's crust than believed previously. This discovery challenges traditional models of PGE economic concentration from silicate and sulfide melts and provides new possibilities for resource prospecting in hydrothermal shallow crust settings. The exceptionally high capacity of the S₃ ^•- ion to bind platinum may also offer new routes for PGE selective extraction from ore and hydrothermal synthesis of noble metal nanomaterials.

Absence of geochemical evidence for an impact event at the Bølling-Allerød/Younger Dryas transition

High concentrations of iridium have been reported in terrestrial sediments dated at 12.9 ka and are interpreted to support an extraterrestrial impact event as the cause of the observed extinction in the Rancholabrean fauna, changes in the Paleoindian cultures, and the onset of the Younger Dryas cooling [Firestone RB, et al. (2007) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 104:16016-16021]. Here, we report platinum group element (PGE: Os, Ir, Ru, Rh, Pt, Pd), gold (Au) concentrations, and (187)Os/(188)Os ratios in time-equivalent terrestrial, lacustrine, and marine sections to seek robust evidence of an extraterrestrial contribution. First, our results do not reproduce the previously reported elevated Ir concentrations. Second, (187)Os/(188)Os isotopic ratios in the sediment layers investigated are similar to average crustal values, indicating the absence of a significant meteoritic Os contribution to these sediments. Third, no PGE anomalies distinct from crustal signatures are present in the marine record in either the Gulf of California (DSDP 480, Guaymas Basin) or the Cariaco Basin (ODP 1002C). Our data show no evidence of an extraterrestrial (ET)-PGE enrichment anomaly in any of the investigated depositional settings investigated across North America and in one section in Belgium. The lack of a clear ET-PGE signature in this sample suite is inconsistent with the impact of a large chondritic projectile at the Bølling-Allerød/Younger Dryas transition.
