Anion-Coordination-Driven Assembly: From Discrete Supramolecular Self-Assemblies to Functional Soft Materials

Anion templated assembly of supramolecular systems has been extensively explored in previous reports, whereas anions serve only as an auxiliary and spectator role. With the development of anion coordination chemistry in recent years, anion coordination-driven assembly (ACDA) has emerged as a new strategy for the construction of supramolecular self-assemblies. Anions are proved to exist as the main actors in the construction of supramolecular architectures, i. e., serve as the coordination center. This Review will focus on the recent progress in anion-coordination-driven assembly of discrete supramolecular architectures, such as helicates, polyhedrons and polygons, and the various applications of 'aniono'-systems. At the end of this Review, we highlight current challenges and opportunities for future research of anion-coordination-driven self-assembly.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Zn2SnO4 Nanostructures for Photodegradation of Rhodamine B under UV and Sunlight

The contamination of water resources by pollutants resulting from human activities represents a major concern nowadays. One promising alternative to solve this problem is the photocatalytic process, which has demonstrated very promising and efficient results. Oxide nanostructures are interesting alternatives for these applications since they present wide band gaps and high surface areas. Among the photocatalytic oxide nanostructures, zinc tin oxide (ZTO) presents itself as an eco-friendly alternative since its composition includes abundant and non-toxic zinc and tin, instead of critical elements. Moreover, ZTO nanostructures have a multiplicity of structures and morphologies possible to be obtained through low-cost solution-based syntheses. In this context, the current work presents an optimization of ZTO nanostructures (polyhedrons, nanoplates, and nanoparticles) obtained by microwave irradiation-assisted hydrothermal synthesis, toward photocatalytic applications. The nanostructures’ photocatalytic activity in the degradation of rhodamine B under both ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and natural sunlight was evaluated. Among the various morphologies, ZTO nanoparticles revealed the best performance, with degradation > 90% being achieved in 60 min under UV irradiation and in 90 min under natural sunlight. The eco-friendly production process and the demonstrated ability of these nanostructures to be used in various water decontamination processes reinforces their sustainability and the role they can play in a circular economy.

Unveiling the Redox Electrochemistry of MOF-Derived fcc-NiCo@GC Polyhedron as an Advanced Electrode Material for Boosting Specific Energy of the Supercapattery

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs), which constitute a new class of porous organic-inorganic hybrid materials, have gained considerable attention in the fields of electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices owing to their open topological structures, large surface areas, tunable morphologies, and extreme redox activity. A synthesis protocol that comprises coprecipitation followed by controlled calcination processes to design a battery-type electrode is used. This electrode consists of three-dimensional (3D), ant cave-like polyhedrons of nickel-cobalt alloy on graphitic carbon (GC; NiCo@GC) nanostructures; trimesic acid is used as a potential MOF-linker. The developed NiCo@GC sample exhibits mesoporous characteristics with the maximum surface area of 94.08 m² g^-1 at 77 K. In addition, the redox activity at different sweep rates reveals the battery-type charge storage behavior of the NiCo@GC electrode; its three-electrode assembly provides 444 C g^-1 specific capacity at 2 A g^-1 with long-term capacity retention. The constructed supercapattery (SC) devices (i.e., AC//NiCo@GC) achieved capacity, specific energy, and specific power are 74.3 mAh g^-1 , 39.5 Wh kg^-1 , and 665 W kg^-1 , respectively. Owing to its reasonable electrochemical characteristics, the prepared NiCo@GC material is a promising candidate for supercapattery electrodes for portable electronic devices.

Terpyridine-Based 3D Discrete Metallosupramolecular Architectures

Terpyridine (tpy)-based 3D discrete metallosupramolecular architectures, which are often inspired by polyhedral geometry and the biological structures found in nature, have drawn significant attention from the community of metallosupramolecular chemistry. Because of the linear tpy-M(II)-tpy connectivity, the creation of sophisticated 3D metallosupramolecules based on tpy remains a formidable synthetic challenge. Nevertheless, with recent advancement in ligand design and self-assembly, diverse 3D metallosupramolecular polyhedrons, such as Platonic solids, Archimedean solids, prims as well as Johnson solids, have been constructed and their potential applications have been explored. This review summarizes the progress on tpy-based discrete 3D metallosupramolecules, aiming to shed more light on the design and construction of novel discrete architectures with molecular-level precision through coordination-driven self-assembly.

Au Polyhedron Array with Tunable Crystal Facets by PVP-Assisted Thermodynamic Control and Its Sharp Shape As Well As High-Energy Exposed Planes Co-Boosted SERS Activity

A route is developed for directly growing 2D Au polyhedron arrays with controllable exposed facets of polyhedron by utilizing the substrate-supported 2D Au quasi-spherical nanoparticle arrays as the Au seed arrays, which cannot be realized by traditional lithography. In the reaction system, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) plays a vital role in guiding the reduced Au atoms and stabilizing the substrate-supported Au seeds. More importantly, by thermodynamic control, PVP as a capping agent can further direct the formation of {111} facets. The key to guarantee the integrity and periodicity of array is a proper reduction of Au ions and low growth rate of crystal. Benefiting from the higher electric field intensity near the sharp vertexes and edges of Au polyhedra and the exposed {110} facets with high energy, the Au polyhedron array with {110} facets encasing polyhedron exhibits good, stable surface enhanced Raman scattering activity toward 4-aminothiophenol among the involved arrays. The proposed fabrication approach tremendously enriches the structural diversity of Au nanoarrays on substrates and greatly overcomes the shortcoming of traditional lithography.

Hierarchical Porous Co9S8/Nitrogen-Doped Carbon@MoS2 Polyhedrons as pH Universal Electrocatalysts for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

The development of highly active and stable earth-abundant electrocatalysts to reduce or eliminate the reliance on noble-metal based ones for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over a broad pH range remains a great challenge. Herein, hierarchical porous Co₉S₈/N-doped carbon@MoS₂ (Co₉S₈/NC@MoS₂) polyhedrons have been synthesized by a facile hydrothermal approach using highly conductive Co/NC polyhedrons composed of cobalt nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon matrices as both the structural support and cobalt source. The Co/NC polyhedrons were prepared by direct carbonization of Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) in Ar atmosphere. Benefiting from the prominent synergistic effect of N-doped carbon enhancing the conductivity of the hybrid, MoS₂ and Co₉S₈ providing abundant catalytically active sites as well as the well-defined polyhedral structure promoting mechanical stability, the as-synthesized Co₉S₈/NC@MoS₂ shows excellent HER activity and good stability over a broad pH range, with onset overpotentials of 4, 38, and 45 mV, Tafel slopes of 60.3, 68.8, and 126.1 mV dec^-1, and overpotentials of 67, 117, and 261 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 in 1.0 M KOH, 0.5 M H₂SO₄, and 1.0 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS), respectively. This work provides a general and promising approach for the design and synthesis of inexpensive and efficient pH-universal HER electrocatalysts.

Polymorphic Architectures of Graphene Quantum Dots

A systematic strategy for designing structured nanomaterials is demonstrated through self-assembly of graphene quantum dots. The approach reveals that graphene derivatives at the nanoscale assemble into various architectures of nanocrystals in a binary solution system. The shapes of the nanocrystals continue to evolve in terms of the intimate association of organic molecules with the dispersion medium, obtaining a high index faceted superlattice. This facile synthetic process provides a versatile strategy for designing particles to new structured materials systems, exploiting the crystallization of layered graphitic carbon structures within single crystals.

{Sn10 [Si(SiMe3 )3 ]4 }(2-) : A highly reactive metalloid tin cluster with an open ligand shell

The reaction of a Sn(I) Cl solution with LiSi(SiMe3 )3 gave the anionic metalloid tin cluster {Sn10 [Si(SiMe3 )3 ]4 }(2-) (7) in good yield. The arrangement of the ten tin atoms in the cluster core can be described as a distorted centaur polyhedron. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that there are 26 bonding electrons in the cluster core, which may be described as an arachno cluster in agreement with Wade's rules. NMR and mass spectrometric investigations showed that 7 is highly reactive, which may be due to the open ligand shell. The easily available tin atoms in 7 thereby open the door to further subsequent reactions, in which 7 may act as a building block to larger cluster aggregates.
