Neutron Reflectivity and Grazing Angle Diffraction

Over the last 10 years, neutron reflectivity has emerged as a powerful technique for the investigation of surface and interfacial phenomena in many different fields. In this paper, a short review of some of the work on neutron reflectivity and grazing-angle diffraction as well as a description of the current and planned neutron rcflectometers at NIST is presented. Specific examples of the characterization of magnetic, superconducting, and polymeric surfaces and interfaces are included.

Estimating the Segregation Strength of Microphase-Separated Diblock Copolymers from the Interfacial Width

The ever-growing catalog of monomers being incorporated into block polymers affords exceptional control over phase behavior and nanoscale structure. The segregation strength, χ N , is the fundamental link between the molecular-level detail and the thermodynamics. However, predicting phase behavior mandates at least one experimental measurement of χ N for each pair of blocks. This typically requires access to the disordered state. We describe a method for estimating χ N from small-angle X-ray scattering measurements of the interfacial width between lamellar microdomains, t x , in the microphase-separated melt. The segregation strength is determined by comparing t x to self-consistent field theory calculations of the intrinsic interfacial width, t i , as a function of the mean-field χ N . The method is validated using a series of independent experimental measurements of t x and χ N , measured via the order-disorder transition temperature, T ODT . The average absolute relative difference between χ N calculated from t x and the value calculated from T ODT is a modest 11%. Corrections for nonplanarity of the interfaces are investigated but do not improve the agreement between the experiments and theory. Published 2019. Transparent PDMS Surfaces with Covalently Attached Lubricants for Enhanced Anti-adhesion Performance

Liquid-like surfaces featuring slippery, omniphobic, covalently attached liquids (SOCALs) reduce unwanted adhesion by providing a molecularly smooth and slippery surface arising from the high mobility of the liquid chains. Such SOCALs are commonly prepared on hard substrates, such as glass, wafers, or metal oxides, despite the importance of nonpolar elastomeric substrates, such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in anti-fouling or nonstick applications. Compared to polar elastomers, hydrophobic PDMS elastomer activation and covalent functionalization are significantly more challenging, as PDMS tends to display fast hydrophobic recovery upon activation as well as superficial cracking. Through the extraction of excess PDMS oligomers and fine-tuning of plasma activation parameters, homogeneously functionalized PDMS with fluorinated polysiloxane brushes could be obtained while at the same time reducing crack formation. Polymer brush mobility was increased through the addition of a smaller molecular silane linker to exhibit enhanced dewetting properties and reduced substrate swelling compared to functionalizations featuring hydrocarbon functionalities. Linear polymer brushes were verified by thermogravimetric analysis. The optical properties of PDMS remained unaffected by the activation in high-frequency plasma but were impacted by low-frequency plasma. Drastic decreases in solid adhesion of not just complex contaminants but even ice could be shown in horizontal push tests, demonstrating the potential of SOCAL-functionalized PDMS surfaces for improved nonstick applications.

Interfacial Engineering for Controlled Crystal Mosaicity in Single-Crystalline Perovskite Films

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have attracted significant attention for optoelectronic applications due to their efficient photoconversion properties. However, grain boundaries and irregular crystal orientations in polycrystalline films remain issues. This study presents a method for producing crystalline-orientation-controlled perovskite single-crystal films using retarded solvent evaporation. It is shown that single-crystal films, grown via inverse temperature crystallization within a confined space, exhibit enhanced optoelectronic property. Using interfacial polymer layer, this method produces high-quality perovskite single-crystalline films with varying crystal orientations. Density functional theory calculations confirm favorable adsorption energies for (110) surfaces with methylammonium iodide and PbI2 terminations on poly(3-hexylthiophene), and stronger adsorption for (224) surfaces with I and methylammonium terminations on polystyrene, influenced by repulsive forces between the thiophene group and the perovskite surface. The correlation between charge transport characteristics and perovskite single-crystalline properties highlights potential advancements in perovskite optoelectronics, improving device performance and reliability.

Nanoscale Structure-Property Relations in Self-Regulated Polymer-Grafted Nanoparticle Composite Structures

Using a model system of poly(methyl methacrylate)-grafted silica nanoparticles (PMMA-NP) and poly(styrene-ran-acrylonitrile) (SAN), we generate unique polymer nanocomposite (PNC) morphologies by balancing the degree of surface enrichment, phase separation, and wetting within the films. Depending on the annealing temperature and time, thin films undergo different stages of phase evolution, resulting in homogeneously dispersed systems at low temperatures, enriched PMMA-NP layers at the PNC interfaces at intermediate temperatures, and three-dimensional bicontinuous structures of PMMA-NP pillars sandwiched between two PMMA-NP wetting layers at high temperatures. Using a combination of atomic force microscopy (AFM), AFM nanoindentation, contact angle goniometry, and optical microscopy, we show that these self-regulated structures lead to nanocomposites with increased elastic modulus, hardness, and thermal stability compared to analogous PMMA/SAN blends. These studies demonstrate the ability to reliably control the size and spatial correlations of both the surface-enriched and phase-separated nanocomposite microstructures, which have attractive technological applications where properties such as wettability, toughness, and wear resistance are important. In addition, these morphologies lend themselves to substantially broader applications, including: (1) structural color applications, (2) tuning optical adsorption, and (3) barrier coatings.
