The potential economic benefits of insect-based feed in Uganda

Black soldier fly farming is gaining traction globally as a strategy for recycling organic waste into high-quality proteins and fat for feed and organic fertilizer for crop production. The support of governments in East Africa to integrate insect meal in livestock feed has opened opportunities for commercializing insect products. Understanding the potential value of Black soldier fly larvae meal (BSFLM) is paramount to inform policies and practices to promote insect farming and insect-based feed for livestock production. This paper uses the economic surplus method to generate evidence on the potential socioeconomic impact of replacing conventional soybean and fish meal protein sources with insect-based feed (IBF), BSFLM, in Uganda. Results indicate that substitution of IBF for existing protein sources will generate net economic benefits of USD 0.73 billion in 20 years (0.037 billion per year). The benefit-cost ratio is estimated at 28:1, and the internal rate of return is 138%, indicating that the insect-based animal feed industry is a profitable investment. Even in the worst-case scenario, when the replacement rate of IBF and its economic benefits are reduced by half, the benefit-cost ratio remains high (8:1). The estimated economic benefit can lift about 4.53 million people above the poverty line in the country. It can also create about 1,252─563,302 new jobs per annum, depending on the substitution rate of conventional protein feeds with IBF (0.1%─45%). Uganda has the potential to produce from about 3,244 tons to 1.5 million tons of IBF. Similarly, using the same replacement rates, the country can produce about 695─312,678 tons of NPK fertilizer from biowaste recycling. About 0.09-41 million tons of biowaste could be recycled, depending on the replacement rate of conventional feed sources with IBF. Our results justify that investing in the insect feed value chain can contribute to Uganda's economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

Bio-detoxification of Jatropha curcas L. cake by a soil-borne Mucor circinelloides strain using a zebrafish survival model and solid-state fermentation

AIMS

The aims of the study were to (i) improve the evaluation criteria of detoxifying Jatropha curcas L. cake (JCC), (ii) isolate and characterize a JCC tolerant strain, (iii) explore its JCC detoxifying potential.

METHODS AND RESULTS

The zebrafish was employed as a survival model to screen the strains capable of detoxifying JCC. A strain identified as Mucor circinelloides SCYA25, which is highly capable of degrading all toxic components, was isolated from soil. Different solid-state fermentation parameters were optimized by response surface methodology. The optimal values for inoculation amount, moisture content, temperature, and time were found to be 18% (1·8 × 10⁶ spores g^-1 cake), 66%, 26, and 36 days, respectively, to achieve maximum detoxification of the JCC (92%). Under optimal fermentation conditions, the protein content of JCC was increased, while the concentrations of ether extract, crude fiber, toxins, and anti-nutritional substances were all degraded considerably (P < 0·05). Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer analysis revealed that the fermentation process could disrupt the surface structure and improve the ratio of α-helix to β-folding in the JCC protein, which may improve the digestibility when the detoxified JCC is used as a feedstuff.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results indicate that M. circinelloides SCYA25 is able to detoxify JCC and improve its nutritional profile, which is beneficial to the safe utilization of JCC as a protein feedstuff.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

The newly identified M. circinelloides SCYA25 detoxified JCC in a safe manner to provide a potential alternative to soybean meal for the feed industry. These results also provide a new perspective and method for the toxicity evaluation and utilization of JCC and similar toxic agricultural by-products.

Effects of increasing alfalfa (Medicago sativa) leaf levels on the fattening and slaughtering performance of organic broilers

A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of increasing alfalfa leaf levels on the performance of organic broilers. The impact of drying temperature on the nutritional value of alfalfa leaves and thereby on broiler performance was studied using alfalfa leaves dried at either low (alfalfa leaves low temperature (ALLT)) or high temperatures (alfalfa leaves (AL)). Six hundred male Hubbard JA-757 broilers were divided into five feeding groups (Control (C), AL2, AL3, AL4 and ALLT5). Alfalfa leaf content was increased in each of the three fattening phases by 5% (C: 0%-0%-0%; AL2: 0%-5%-10%; AL3: 5%-10%-15%; AL4: 10%-15%-20%; and ALLT5: 10%-15%-20%). At the end of the experiment, broilers in group C had the highest body and carcass weights. Groups AL3, AL4 and ALLT5 showed the lowest body and carcass weights. In particular, the early introduction of alfalfa leaves (5% in phase 1) and high alfalfa leaf content (15%-20%) significantly decreased performance. Antinutritional substances such as saponins occur in alfalfa. In fact, the saponin analysis showed high contents of 3-Glc-Glc-28-Ara-Rha-medicagenic acid and HexA-dHex-Pen-Pen-Pen-zanhic acid in both high- and low-temperature alfalfa leaves.

Conversion of yellow wine lees into high-protein yeast culture by solid-state fermentation

This study is focussed on the possibility of producing a yeast culture with yellow wine lees as a substrate by solid-state fermentation (SSF). Results showed that a yeast count of 1.58 × 10⁹ CFU/g was achieved by signal factor and orthogonal experiments. After fermentation, the starch content in the yeast culture reduced from 32.2% ± 0.5% to 7.5% ± 0.2%, and the contents of crude protein and peptide increased from 36.1% ± 0.8% to 48.0% ± 1.0% and 3.9% ± 0.2% to 7.2% ± 0.4%, respectively. Additionally, large amounts of short peptides and free amino acids were detected by fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC). These results suggest that yellow wine lees are a suitable substrate for the production of yeast cultures. It can serve as a growth-promoting factor and help reduce the shortage of protein feed in the animal industry. This research provides a potential way for the utilization of agro-industrial residues.

The effect of protein source in late pregnancy feed on the occurrence of agalactia post partum in the sow

The effect of an all vegetable protein diet on the occurrence of agalacatia was studied. The experiment was performed in a commercial one thousand sow unit with an average frequency of agalactia of 50%. The all vegetable diet significantly reduced the rectal temperature 48 h post partum and the number of medical treatments required. The litter size at weaning was larger (p greater than 0.05) in the group on the all vegetable protein diet.
