Abstract
Introduction The oral cavity is the gateway to the human body. Periodontitis is a common inflammatory condition affecting the oral cavity and a known etiological cause of tissue destruction, discomfort, and halitosis. Pomegranate (Punica granatum) and henna (Lawsonia inermis) are herbs known to mankind from time immemorial whose extracts are proven to fight inflammation. The current study was done to evaluate the phytochemical anti-inflammatory efficacy of Punica and Lawsonia in patients with chronic periodontitis and test the potency of herbal mouthwashes in fighting the inflammatory condition affecting the oral cavity using distilled water as a control group. Materials and methods A double-blinded randomized control trial was conducted on 60 patients who were recruited and divided into three groups, in which 20 patients were prescribed with pomegranate (Punica: n=20) mouthwash and 20 patients with henna (Lawsonia: n=20) mouthwash along with distilled water (n=20). All patients were randomly allocated using the coin toss method and advised to use the prescribed mouthwash for a period of two weeks. Unstimulated saliva was collected before using the mouthwash, and salivary enzymes such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and their levels were assessed spectrometrically using the infrared spectrophotoscopy (IFSC) method. Each patient was assigned a mouthwash and recalled after two weeks. Unstimulated saliva was again collected, and salivary activity levels of enzymes AST, ALT, and LDH were analyzed after using mouthwash in a similar method as done before. Later on, the salivary levels of enzymes AST, ALT, and LDH were compared before and after the usage of mouthwashes. Statistical significance was seen in the salivary enzymatic activity of AST, ALT, and LDH before and after using Punica and Lawsonia mouthwashes due to their potent phytochemical action in fighting inflammation. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 22 (IBM SPSS Statistics, Armonk, NY). The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to determine the normality and significance; intragroup comparison was done using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Mann-Whitney U test. Intergroup comparison was done using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results Punica patients had much lower levels of salivary AST and ALT (p<0.001) and a decrease in LDH (p=0.002) after the usage of mouthwash for a period of two weeks. Also, patients using Lawsonia as herbal mouthwash had reduction in the values of AST (p=0.001) and LDH (p=0.003) and prominent reduction in ALT (p<0.001) after a period of two weeks. But in the case of patients using distilled water, there was an increase in the salivary enzymatic activity of AST and ALT, which was statistically significant (p<0.001), and LDH (p=0.006) depicting the disease progression even after using mouthwash for the given time period of two weeks. Conclusion This study demonstrated that both Punica and Lawsonia were effective in reducing the inflammation in patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis. However, when intergroup comparison was done, the anti-inflammatory efficacy was superior in Punica with significant reduction in the parameters such as of AST, ALT, and LDH when compared to Lawsonia owing to its potent phytochemical constituency in cutting down the inflammation. Hence, Punica can be used as an implicated effective anti-inflammatory herbal mouthwash.

Abstract
Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) has long been used for medical purposes. Punica protopunicas and Punica granatum L. are two prominent species of pomegranate, generally known as "Anar" and farmed worldwide. Its medicinal value is documented in several ancient texts. This review article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the remedial uses of pomegranate in traditional and modern medicine. The methodology employed for this review involves a systematic literature search, collection of relevant articles, and critical analysis of their content. The review covers the botanical properties, phytochemical composition, and diverse remedial applications of pomegranate, including its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, cardiovascular, antimicrobial, and dermatological properties. The gathered data emphasizes the potential benefits of pomegranate-derived compounds in managing a range of health issues. This review sheds light on the importance of pomegranate as a valuable natural resource for various therapeutic interventions and encourages further research to unlock its full remedial potential. Traditional medicine is gaining popularity to restore health to individuals with few negative effects. Due to the existence of key phytochemical elements such as flavonoids, punic acid, ellagic acid, anthocyanins, ellagitannins, flavones, and estrogenic flavonoids, it has a wide range of clinical applications.

Abstract
Introduction Root canal morphology tends to be complicated by nature and dealing with this intricacy can be challenging because it makes it difficult to completely disinfect the root canal space. The success of root canal therapy is also determined by the biomechanical preparation of the canal with the application of instruments and irrigating solutions. Due to the fact that the root dentin surface continues to interact with the irrigating solution during preparation, it's critical to evaluate the mechanical characteristics and smear layer removal. Though sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is the most commonly used irrigant due to its tissue-dissolving abilities, it has certain drawbacks which include the inability to remove the smear layer and also affects the mechanical properties of root dentin. To overcome these limitations, a variety of herbal substitutes like Punica granatum and Emblica officinalis which possess anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties can be used as endodontic irrigants. Several studies on the anti-bacterial properties of natural irrigants of pomegranate and amla were reported. However, the mechanical properties and smear layer removal of Punica granatum and Emblica officinalis have not been explored in the field of endodontics. Aim The main aim of this in vitro study is to compare and evaluate microhardness, smear layer removal efficacy and depth of penetration of herbal and conventional irrigants. Materials and methods Thirty-six palatal roots of maxillary molars were decoronated and instrumented up to F3. These roots were sectioned longitudinally and divided into three test groups: Group 1: 12.5% Punica granatum; Group 2: 6.25% Emblica officinalis; control: Group 3: 2.5% NaOCl. All specimens were irrigated with 5ml of each irrigant for 5 minutes. Microhardness of root dentin was measured using a Vickers diamond intender, smear layer removal using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and depth of penetration using a stereomicroscope. The data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA and the inter-group comparison using Tukey's post hoc test. Results Statistical analysis was done using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test using SPSS software version 17.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago ). The highest microhardness was seen in Group 1 (cervical: 53.8375 ± 1.35956, middle: 53.9875 ± 1.01761, apical: 53.6875 ± 1.63133) while Group 2 (cervical: 43.2750 ± 1.73596, middle: 43.3125 ± 1.17648, apical: 43.8000 ± 1.32665) and Group 3 (cervical: 42.7250 ± 2.93391, middle: 41.9625 ± 1.66985, apical: 42.0250 ± 2.21085) showed significant reduction in root dentin hardness. Regarding smear layer removal Group 1 (1.3750 ± 0.51755), and Group 2 (1.2500 ± 0.46291) reveals greater smear removal in the middle third of the root dentin compared with Group 3 (2.3750 ± 0.51755), which showed the least smear layer removal. A greater depth of penetration was seen in Group 1 (0.5488 ± 0.05222) and Group 2 (0.5263 ± 0.05181) than in Group 3 (0.3087 ± 0.05743). Conclusion The present study reveals that the least reduction of microhardness was seen in Punica granatum followed by Emblica officinalis and NaOCl. The smear layer removal efficacy and depth of penetration were greater in Punica granatum and Emblica officinalis than in NaOCl. It was concluded that as these herbal irrigants are biocompatible agents, they can be considered for future use in root canal treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The limitations of dental irrigation solutions reinforce the need to explore novel bioactive compounds that are safer and biodegradable. This study aimed to prepare a 10% pomegranate peel solution (Punica granatum extract - PGE) and evaluate its antimicrobial and antioxidant effects for root canal treatment. METHODS Lyophilized extracts (1g/10 mL) from pomegranate peels were prepared, and the punicalagin content was assessed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography using pure punicalagin (standard). The antimicrobial activity was tested against common persistent root canal pathogens by the agar diffusion method, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal/fungicide concentration (MCB/MFC). The antioxidant activity (%AA) was assessed by the DPPH radical scavenging method. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). RESULTS The total phenolic content of the PGEextract was 6.55 µg/mL. Differences were found among the inhibition zone of PGE (23.32 ± 3.65), 1% NaOCl (30.76 ± 4.73), and 50% ethanol (without inhibition) (p < 0.05). The MIC values of PGE ranged between 6.25 and 75 mg/ml, and PGE was effective against the tested pathogens. PGE had antioxidant potential (IC50 = 3.52 µg/mL); however, the mean values were inferior to that of the quercetin (positive control) (IC50 = 0.95 µg/mL). The DPPH scavenging effect (%AA) of PGE (70.98 ± 2.3) had no difference from the positive control (72.94 ± 2.1) (p = 0.253). CONCLUSION The PGE extract was successfully biosynthesized and exhibited antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, suggesting its potential use as an adjuvant therapy during root canal treatment.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by the failure of spontaneous resolution of inflammation with lifetime perseverance, becoming one of the major causes of disability in millions of people. It is mainly characterized by progressive erosion of cartilage in response to the formation of pannus leading to chronic polyarthritis and joint distortion. Early diagnosis and advances in molecular biology undoubtedly revolutionized therapeutic interventions in the past decade for better disease management. Despite favorable prospects, many patients still fail to respond to the current therapies urging a burning need to develop newer and safer medications. Herbal plants have been utilized since the ancient era and provided the base for massive bioactive compounds with flaunting therapeutic potential, many being advanced to drugs that are consumed worldwide for treating countless ailments. Scientific studies showed the involvement of several cellular mechanisms like oxidative stress suppression, downregulated synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines namely interleukins (IL-1, IL-6), TNF-α, NF-κB, demoted metalloproteinases induced cartilage destruction and augmentation of free radical scavenging and antioxidant activity in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. A plethora of active phytoconstituents like flavonoids, saponins, terpenes, alkaloids, lactones, etc, have been isolated from herbal plants with proven curative actions. The present review enlists some of the herbal drugs that can be used to amend the effects of rheumatoid arthritis and impart symptomatic relief to patients.

Abstract
CONTEXT Glioma is a malignant brain tumor with rapid proliferation, infiltrative growth, poor prognosis and it is chemoresistent. Pomegranate seed oil (PSO) has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor properties. This study showed the optimization of PSO nanoemulsions (NEs) as an alternative for glioma treatment. OBJECTIVE The study aimed to evaluate PSO NEs cytotoxicity on human blood cells and antiglioma effects against C6 cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS NEs were prepared by the spontaneous emulsification method, using PSO at 1.5 and 3.0%, and were evaluated regarding their physical stability and antioxidant activity. Toxicity evaluations in human blood cells were performed in terms of cell viability, genotoxicity, lipid peroxidation, protein carbonylation, catalase activity and hemolysis at 0.1, 0.25 and 0.5 mg/mL PSO, after a 72-h incubation period. In vitro antitumor effect was determined against glioma cells after 24 and 48 h, and astrocytes were used as a non-transformed cell model. RESULTS Formulations presented droplet size below 250 nm, low polydispersity index, negative zeta potential and pH in the acid range. NEs and PSO had scavenging capacity around 30% and promoted a proliferative effect in mononuclear cells, increasing about 50% cell viability. No genotoxic and oxidative damage was observed in lipid peroxidation, protein carbonylation and catalase activity evaluations for NEs. Hemolysis study showed a hemolytic effect at high concentrations. Moreover, formulations reduced only tumor cell viability to 47%, approximately. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Formulations are adequate and safe for intravenous administration. Besides, in vitro antitumor activity indicates that NEs are promising for glioma treatment.
