Vehicle-Bridge Interaction Modelling Using Precise 3D Road Surface Analysis

Uneven road surfaces are the primary source of excitation in the dynamic interaction between a bridge and a vehicle and can lead to errors in bridge weigh-in-motion (B-WIM) systems. In order to correctly reproduce this interaction in a numerical model of a bridge, it is essential to know the magnitude and location of the various roadway irregularities. This paper presents a methodology for measuring the 3D road surface using static terrestrial laser scanning and a numerical model for simulating vehicle passage over a bridge with a measured road surface. This model allows the evaluation of strain responses in the time domain at any bridge location considering different parameters such as vehicle type, lateral position and speed, road surface unevenness, bridge type, etc. Since the time domain strains are crucial for B-WIM algorithms, the proposed approach facilitates the analysis of the different factors affecting the B-WIM results. The first validation of the proposed methodology was carried out on a real bridge, where extensive measurements were performed using different sensors, including measurements of the road surface, the response of the bridge when crossed by a test vehicle and the dynamic properties of the bridge and vehicle. The comparison between the simulated and measured bridge response marks a promising step towards investigating the influence of unevenness on the results of B-WIM.

Efficacy of Vehicle Scanning Methods in Estimating the Mode Shapes of Bridges Seated on Elastic Supports

This study systematically assesses the efficacy of the vehicle scanning methods (VSM) in accurately estimating the mode shapes of bridges seated on elastic supports. Three state-of-the-art VSM methods are employed to obtain the mode shapes of bridges using the vehicle data during its travel. Two of the evaluated methods use a signal decomposition technique to extract the modal components of the bridge from the contact point of the response while the third one relies on the segmentation of the measured signals along the bridge deck and applying an operational modal analysis tool to each segmented signal to estimate the mode shapes. Numerical analyses are conducted on one single- and one two-span bridge, considering smooth and rough road profiles, different vehicle speeds, and presence of lead vehicle. The accuracy of the numerical models used in developing and assessing vehicle scanning models is tested, and the results of the study demonstrate the method using a half-car vehicle model and signal decomposition technique shows robustness against increasing vehicle speeds and road roughness while the method applying the segmentation of the measured signals provides relatively accurate mode shape estimates at the bridge edges at low speed, although the three methods have their limitations. It is also observed that simplified bridge and vehicle models can hide potential challenges that arise from the complexity of actual vehicle and bridge systems. Considering that a significant number of bridges worldwide are built on elastic supports, the practical success of vehicle scanning methods depends on their ability to handle elastic boundary conditions with reliability. Therefore, the article provides valuable insights into the capabilities and limitations of the current vehicle scanning methods, paving the way for further advancements and refinements in these techniques.

Road Recognition Based on Vehicle Vibration Signal and Comfortable Speed Strategy Formulation Using ISA Algorithm

When a vehicle is being driven, it is excited by the road roughness and generates its own vibration. In order to improve the vehicle's riding comfort and the physical-mental health of passengers in the vehicle, this paper proposes a formulation method for a comfortable speed strategy and the technical route of its application. According to international standard ISO 2631-1, the relationship between the weighted root-mean-square acceleration value and comfortable vehicle speed is analyzed. The simulation test platform of the road roughness signal and vehicle vibration signal is built by using the filtering white noise method and the second Lagrange equation through Matlab/Simulink. Combined with the simulation platform, this paper extracts seven characteristics with statistical properties from the time-domain signal and obtains 500 sample data. Random forest (RF), extreme learning machine (ELM), and radial basis function neural network (RBF-NN) are applied to identify roads. Two comfortable speed strategy formulation methods based on the improved simulated annealing (ISA) algorithm are proposed and compared according to the solution effect of each grade of comfortable speed. The results show that the simulated signals of each grade road roughness are accurate. Road recognition can be effectively carried out using the statistical characteristics of vehicle vibration acceleration signals. ELM has high recognition accuracy and fast execution speed. The ISA-II algorithm has a low solution error of comfortable speed and a low computation time. The comfortable speed of the research vehicle on different road grades showed a great difference.

Can Machine Learning and PS-InSAR Reliably Stand in for Road Profilometric Surveys?

This paper proposes a methodology for correlating products derived by Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) measurements and laser profilometric road roughness surveys. The procedure stems from two previous studies, in which several Machine Learning Algorithms (MLAs) have been calibrated for predicting the average vertical displacement (in terms of mm/year) of road pavements as a result of exogenous phenomena occurrence, such as subsidence. Such algorithms are based on surveys performed with Persistent Scatterer Interferometric SAR (PS-InSAR) over an area of 964 km² in the Tuscany Region, Central Italy. Starting from this basis, in this paper, we propose to integrate the information provided by these MLAs with 10 km of in situ profilometric measurements of the pavement surface roughness and relative calculation of the International Roughness Index (IRI). Accordingly, the aim is to appreciate whether and to what extent there is an association between displacements estimated by MLAs and IRI values. If a dependence exists, we may argue that road regularity is driven by exogenous phenomena and MLAs allow for the replacement of in situ surveys, saving considerable time and money. In this research framework, results reveal that there are several road sections that manifest a clear association among these two methods, while others denote that the relationship is weaker, and in situ activities cannot be bypassed to evaluate the real pavement conditions. We could wrap up that, in these stretches, the road regularity is driven by endogenous factors which MLAs did not integrate during their training. Once additional MLAs conditioned by endogenous factors have been developed (such as traffic flow, the structure of the pavement layers, and material characteristics), practitioners should be able to estimate the quality of pavement over extensive and complex road networks quickly, automatically, and with relatively low costs.
