Delayed development of basal spikelets in wheat explains their increased floret abortion and rudimentary nature

Large differences exist in the number of grains per spikelet across an individual wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) spike. The central spikelets produce the highest number of grains, while apical and basal spikelets are less productive, and the most basal spikelets are commonly only developed in rudimentary form. Basal spikelets are delayed in initiation, yet they continue to develop and produce florets. The precise timing or the cause of their abortion remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated the underlying causes of basal spikelet abortion using shading applications in the field. We found that basal spikelet abortion is likely to be the consequence of complete floret abortion, as both occur concurrently and have the same response to shading treatments. We detected no differences in assimilate availability across the spike. Instead, we show that the reduced developmental age of basal florets pre-anthesis is strongly associated with their increased abortion. Using the developmental age pre-abortion, we were able to predict final grain set per spikelet across the spike, alongside the characteristic gradient in the number of grains from basal to central spikelets. Future efforts to improve spikelet homogeneity across the spike could thus focus on improving basal spikelet establishment and increasing floret development rates pre-abortion.

Neglected cervical meningocele in an adult: illustrative case

BACKGROUND

Posterior cervical meningoceles are rare in adults because most are surgically excised early in life. Such meningoceles in adults are mostly presented as a cystic mass and their presentation as a solid mass is very rare.

OBSERVATIONS

An asymptomatic adult with cervical meningocele presented as a congenital midline skin covered solid mass in the posterior aspect of the neck is presented. Neuroradiological surveys showed attachment of the mass to intradural spinal cord. With diagnosis of a cervical meningocele, after excision of the solid sac, the stalk extending from the core of the mass to the dura was isolated. This was followed by intradural spinal cord detethering. The mass was compatible with rudimentary meningocele in pathology.

LESSONS

Neglected cervical meningocele is quite rare in adults. Surgical removal of the mass in adults is usually for cosmetic reasons rather than neurological impairment. However, surgical removal of the mass without intradural cord detethering is not sufficient. In such cases, late onset quadriparesis may be appear due to the spinal cord tethering scenario.

Waxing and Waning of Wings

A major challenge to Darwinian evolution is explaining 'rudimentary' organs. This is particularly relevant to birds: rudimentary wings occur in fossils, as well as in developing, molting, and flight-impaired birds. Evidence shows that young birds flap small wings to improve locomotion and transition to flight. Although small wings also occur in adults, their potential role in locomotion is rarely considered. Here we describe the prevalence of rudimentary wings in extant birds, and how wings wax and wane on many timescales. This waxing and waning is integral to the avian clade and offers a rich arena for exploring links between form, function, performance, behavior, ecology, and evolution. Although our understanding is nascent, birds clearly show that rudimentary structures can enhance performance and survival.

Laparoscopic resection of functional, noncommunicating uterine horn in close approximation to functional hemiuterus

OBJECTIVE

To review the presentation of unicornuate uterus with a functional noncommunicating rudimentary uterine horn and a laparoscopic method of management, highlighting laparoscopic surgical techniques.

DESIGN

A video review of unicornuate uterus with a functional noncommunicating rudimentary uterine horn and a laparoscopic approach to treatment in a 13-year-old pubertal female with severe menstrual pain.

SETTING

Tertiary care facility.

PATIENT(S)

A 13-year-old G0 was referred to the clinic for severe cyclic right lower quadrant pain during menses. Transvaginal ultrasonography revealed a left unicornuate uterus with a right-sided noncommunicating rudimentary horn measuring 4.8 × 4.7 × 4.6 cm, containing blood consistent with hematometra. Her kidneys were bilaterally present and normal by ultrasonography.

INTERVENTION(S)

Because of the patient's worsening pain and the presence of hematometra, we proceeded with diagnostic laparoscopy and removal of the rudimentary uterine horn. The entire procedure was performed laparoscopically, with an estimated total blood loss of 20 mL. Included are tips for laparoscopic resection and suturing.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S)

Pathologic features and postoperative course.

RESULTS

The patient's pathologic features were benign, and her severe menstrual pain was resolved. She had no complications or readmissions.

CONCLUSION(S)

In patients with severe menstrual pain from outflow obstruction from a noncommunicating rudimentary uterine horn with functional endometrium, laparoscopic resection can be a safe and effective method of treatment.

Bilateral molariform supernumerary teeth in the anterior maxilla: a report of two cases

Supernumerary teeth are additional teeth besides the normal series and can be found in any region of the dental arch. Supernumerary teeth can be classified according to their form and locations. Early diagnosis and treatment of patients with supernumerary teeth may prevent or minimize complications. The treatment options depend on the type and position of the supernumerary tooth and its effect on the adjacent structures. Two male patients were referred to our clinic due to swelling in their maxillae and interrupted eruption of teeth. Upon radiological examination of the patients, impacted supernumerary teeth were found. Surgical removal of these teeth were perfomed and they were found to be molariform. We aim to present the two rare cases of molariform supernumerary teeth in this article.

Rupture of Noncommunicating Rudimentary Horn of Uterus

Rudimentary horn pregnancy though an extremely rare condition can be associated with high morbidity. We report a case of ruptured noncommunicating rudimentary horn with unicornuate uterus.
