The Cetacean Sanctuary: A Sea of Unknowns

Housing cetaceans in netted sea pens is not new and is common for many accredited managed-care facilities. Hence, the distinction between sanctuary and sea pen is more about the philosophies of those who run these sanctuary facilities, the effects of these philosophies on the animals' welfare, and how proponents of these sanctuaries fund the care of these animals. Here, I consider what plans exist for cetacean sanctuaries and discuss the caveats and challenges associated with this form of activist-managed captivity. One goal for stakeholders should be to disregard the emotional connotations of the word "sanctuary" and explore these proposals objectively with the best interest of the animals in mind. Another focus should be related to gauging the public's understanding of proposed welfare benefits to determine if long-term supporters of donation-based sanctuary models will likely see their expectations met as NGOs and their government partners consider moving forward with cetacean sanctuary experiments.

Catecholamine Involvement in the Bioluminescence Control of Two Species of Anthozoans

Bioluminescence, the ability of living organisms to emit visible light, is an important ecological feature for many marine species. To fulfil the ecological role (defence, offence, or communication), bioluminescence needs to be finely controlled. While many benthic anthozoans are luminous, the physiological control of light emission has only been investigated in the sea pansy, Renilla koellikeri. Through pharmacological investigations, a nervous catecholaminergic bioluminescence control was demonstrated for the common sea pen, Pennatula phosphorea, and the tall sea pen, Funiculina quadrangularis. Results highlight the involvement of adrenaline as the main neuroeffector triggering clusters of luminescent flashes. While noradrenaline and octopamine elicit flashes in P. phosphorea, these two biogenic amines do not trigger significant light production in F. quadrangularis. All these neurotransmitters act on both the endodermal photocytes located at the base and crown of autozooids and specific chambers of water-pumping siphonozooids. Combined with previous data on R. koellikeri, our results suggest that a catecholaminergic control mechanisms of bioluminescence may be conserved in Anthozoans.

The first record, tagging and release of a neonatal whale shark Rhincodon typus in Taiwan

On 27 October 2013, a Rhincodon typus was apparently chased by a group of Caranx ignobilis into nearshore waters near Green Island (Ludao), east of Taiwan. A fisherman brought it back to port where it was kept in a small sea pen until release. The R. typus was 78 cm total length, and was tagged and released on 29 October 2013.
