Evolution of Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction Activity Induced by Charge Segregation in Atomically Precise AuAg Nanoclusters Based on Icosahedral M13 Unit 3D Assembly

The precise self-assembly of building blocks at atomic level provides the opportunity to achieve clusters with advanced catalytic properties. However, most of the current self-assembled materials are fabricated by 1/2D assembly of blocks. High dimensional (that is, 3D) assembly is widely believed to improve the performance of cluster. Herein, the effect of 3D assembly on the activity for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) is investigated by using a range of clusters (Au8 Ag55 , Au8 Ag57 , Au12 Ag60 ) based on 3D assembly of M13 unit as models. Although three clusters have almost the same sizes and geometric structures, Au8 Ag55 exhibits the best CO2 RR performance due to the strong CO2 adsorption capacity and effective inhibition of H2 evolution competition reaction. The deep insight into the superior activity of Au8 Ag55 is the unique electronic structure attributed to the charge segregation. This study not only demonstrates that the assembly mode greatly affects the catalytic activity, but also offers an idea for rational designing and precisely constructing catalysts with controllable activities.

Advanced Functional Liquid Crystals

Liquid crystals have been intensively studied as functional materials. Recently, integration of various disciplines has led to new directions in the design of functional liquid-crystalline materials in the fields of energy, water, photonics, actuation, sensing, and biotechnology. Here, recent advances in functional liquid crystals based on polymers, supramolecular complexes, gels, colloids, and inorganic-based hybrids are reviewed, from design strategies to functionalization of these materials and interfaces. New insights into liquid crystals provided by significant progress in advanced measurements and computational simulations, which enhance new design and functionalization of liquid-crystalline materials, are also discussed.

Fabrication of Ring-Shaped Deposits of Polystyrene Microparticles Driven by Thermocapillary Mechanism

Fabrication of ring-shaped deposits of microparticles on solid surfaces with the desired length scales and morphology of particle arrangements is of great importance when developing modern optical and electronic resonators, chemical sensors, touch screens, field-emission displays, porous materials, and coatings with various functional properties. However, the controlled formation of ring-shaped patterns scaling from a few millimeters up to centimeters with simultaneous control of particle arrangement at the microscale is one of the most challenging problems in advanced materials science and technology. Here, we report a fabrication approach for ring-shaped structures of microparticles on a glass surface that relied on a local thermal impact produced by the subsurface heater and heat sink. Thermocapillary convection in the liquid covering microparticles in combination with evaporative lithography is responsible for the particle transport and the assembling into the ring-shaped patterns. An advantageous feature of this approach is based on the control of thermocapillary flow direction, achieved by changing the sign of the temperature gradient in the liquid, switching between heating and cooling modes. That allows for changing the particle transfer direction to create the ring-shaped deposits and dynamically tune their size and density distribution. We have studied the influence of the power applied to the heat source/sink and the duration of the applied thermal field on the rate of the ring fabrication, the sizes of the ring and the profile of the particle distribution in the ring. The proposed method is flexible to control simultaneously the centimeter scale and microscale processes of transfer and arrangements of particles and can be applied to the fabrication of ring structures of particles of different nature and shape.

Micro- and Nanopatterning of Halide Perovskites Where Crystal Engineering for Emerging Photoelectronics Meets Integrated Device Array Technology

Tremendous efforts have been devoted to developing thin film halide perovskites (HPs) for use in high-performance photoelectronic devices, including solar cells, displays, and photodetectors. Furthermore, structured HPs with periodic micro- or nanopatterns have recently attracted significant interest due to their potential to not only improve the efficiency of an individual device via the controlled arrangement of HP crystals into a confined geometry, but also to technologically pixelate the device into arrays suitable for future commercialization. However, micro- or nanopatterning of HPs is not usually compatible with conventional photolithography, which is detrimental to ionic HPs and requires special techniques. Herein, a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art technologies used to develop micro- and nanometer-scale HP patterns, with an emphasis on their controlled microstructures based on top-down and bottom-up approaches, and their potential for future applications, is provided. Top-down approaches include modified conventional lithographic techniques and soft-lithographic methods, while bottom-up approaches include template-assisted patterning of HPs based on lithographically defined prepatterns and self-assembly. HP patterning is shown here to not only improve device performance, but also to reveal the unprecedented functionality of HPs, leading to new research areas that utilize their novel photophysical properties.

Exploration and exploitation of water in colloidal crystals

Water on solid surfaces is ubiquitously found in nature, in most cases due to mere adsorption from ambient moisture. Because porous structures have large surfaces, water may significantly affect their characteristics. This is particularly obvious in systems formed by separate particles, whose interactions are strongly influenced by small amounts of liquid. Water/solid phenomena, like adsorption, condensation, capillary forces, or interparticle cohesion, have typically been studied at relatively large scales down to the microscale, like in wet granular media. However, much less is known about how water is confined and acts at the nanoscale, for example, in the interstices of divided systems, something of utmost importance in many areas of materials science nowadays. With novel approaches, in-depth investigations as to where and how water is placed in the nanometer-sized pores of self-assembled colloidal crystals have been made, which are employed as a well-defined, versatile model system with useful optical properties. In this Progress Report, knowledge gained in the last few years about water distribution in such nanoconfinements is gathered, along with how it can be controlled and the consequences it brings about to extract new or enhance existing material functionalities. New methods developed and new capabilities of standard techniques are described, and the water interplay with the optical, chemical, and mechanical properties of the ensemble are discussed. Some lines for applicability are also highlighted and aspects to be addressed in the near future are critically summarized.
