Mechanisms of Shock Dissipation in Semicrystalline Polyethylene

Semicrystalline polymers are lightweight, multiphase materials that exhibit attractive shock dissipation characteristics and have potential applications as protective armor for people and equipment. For shocks of 10 GPa or less, we analyzed various mechanisms for the storage and dissipation of shock wave energy in a realistic, united atom (UA) model of semicrystalline polyethylene. Systems characterized by different levels of crystallinity were simulated using equilibrium molecular dynamics with a Hugoniostat to ensure that the resulting states conform to the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions. To determine the role of structural rearrangements, order parameters and configuration time series were collected during the course of the shock simulations. We conclude that the major mechanisms responsible for the storage and dissipation of shock energy in semicrystalline polyethylene are those associated with plastic deformation and melting of the crystalline domain. For this UA model, plastic deformation occurs primarily through fine crystallographic slip and the formation of kink bands, whose long period decreases with increasing shock pressure.

Fabrication and Characterization of Poly (vinyl alcohol) and Chitosan Oligosaccharide-Based Blend Films

In the present study, we report the development of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan oligosaccharide (COS)-based novel blend films. The concentration of COS was varied between 2.5-10.0 wt% within the films. The inclusion of COS added a brown hue to the films. FTIR spectroscopy revealed that the extent of intermolecular hydrogen bonding was most prominent in the film that contained 5.0 wt% of COS. The diffractograms showed that COS altered the degree of crystallinity of the films in a composition-dependent manner. As evident from the thermal analysis, COS content profoundly impacted the evaporation of water molecules from the composite films. Stress relaxation studies demonstrated that the blend films exhibited more mechanical stability as compared to the control film. The impedance profiles indicated the capacitive-dominant behavior of the prepared films. Ciprofloxacin HCl-loaded films showed excellent antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus. The prepared films were observed to be biocompatible. Hence, the prepared PVA/COS-based blend films may be explored for drug delivery applications.

Phase Behavior of Amorphous/Semicrystalline Conjugated Polymer Blends

We report the phase behavior of amorphous/semicrystalline conjugated polymer blends composed of low bandgap poly[2,6-(4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta [2,1-b;3,4-b′]dithiophene) -alt-4,7(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT) and poly{(N,N′-bis(2-octyldodecyl)naphthalene -1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl)-alt-5,5′-(2,2′-bithiophene)} (P(NDI2OD-T2)). As usual in polymer blends, these two polymers are immiscible because ΔS_m ≈ 0 and ΔH_m > 0, leading to ΔG_m > 0, in which ΔS_m, ΔH_m, and ΔG_m are the entropy, enthalpy, and Gibbs free energy of mixing, respectively. Specifically, the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter (χ) for the PCPDTBT /P(NDI2OD-T2) blend was estimated to be 1.26 at 298.15 K, indicating that the blend was immiscible. When thermally analyzed, the melting and crystallization point depression was observed with increasing PCPDTBT amounts in the blends. In the same vein, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed that the π-π interactions in P(NDI2OD-T2) lamellae were diminished if PCPDTBT was incorporated into the blends. Finally, the correlation of the solid-liquid phase transition and structural information for the blend system may provide insight for understanding other amorphous/semicrystalline conjugated polymers used as active layers in all-polymer solar cells, although the specific morphology of a film is largely affected by nonequilibrium kinetics.

Hierarchical Morphology of Poly(ether ether ketone) Aerogels

The phase diagram for the thermoreversible gelation of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) in 4-chlorophenol (4CP) was constructed over broad temperature and concentration ranges, revealing that PEEK is capable of dissolving and forming gels in both 4CP and dichloroacetic acid (DCA) up to a concentration of 25 wt %. Highly porous aerogels of PEEK were prepared through simple solvent exchange followed by one of two drying methods of solvent removal from the wet gel: freeze-drying or supercritical CO₂ fluid extraction (SC-drying). The field-emission scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that gelation of PEEK in 4CP, followed by SC-drying, produced aerogels with well-defined lamellar aggregates as compared to less ordered aggregates formed from DCA. Mechanical properties (in compression) were shown to improve with increasing density, resulting in equivalent compressive moduli at comparable density, regardless of the preparation method (gelation solvent selection, concentration variation, or drying method). Nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms indicate that PEEK aerogels are comprised of mesopores (2-50 nm diameter pores) formed from stacked crystalline lamella. PEEK aerogels prepared using SC-drying exhibit higher Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas than freeze-dried aerogels of comparable density. The ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering/small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS)/wide-angle X-ray scattering analysis revealed a hierarchical morphology of the PEEK aerogels with structural features from PEEK crystallites to agglomerates of stacked lamella that spanned a wide range of length scales. SANS contrast-matching confirmed that the morphological origin of the principle scattering feature in PEEK aerogels is stacked crystalline lamella. Nitrogen sorption measurements of porosity and the specific surface area of the PEEK aerogels were correlated with the SAXS analysis to reveal a remarkably high surface area attributed to the platelet-like, lamellar morphology. Contact angle and contact angle hysteresis (CAH) revealed that low-density PEEK aerogels (ρ < 0.15 g/cm³) have water contact angles above the superhydrophobicity cutoff angle (>150°) and a very low CAH near 1°.

Microstructure of Pharmaceutical Semicrystalline Dispersions: The Significance of Polymer Conformation

The microstructure of pharmaceutical semicrystalline solid dispersions has attracted extensive attention due to its complexity that might result in the diversity in physical stability, dissolution behavior, and pharmaceutical performance of the systems. Numerous factors have been reported that dictate the microstructure of semicrystalline dispersions. Nevertheless, the importance of the complicated conformation of the polymer has never been elucidated. In this study, we investigate the microstructure of dispersions of polyethylene glycol and active pharmaceutical ingredients by small-angle X-ray scattering and high performance differential scanning calorimetry. Polyethylene glycol with molecular weight of 2000 g/mol (PEG2000) and 6000 g/mol (PEG6000) exhibited remarkable discrepancy in the lamellar periodicity in dispersions with APIs which was attributed to the differences in their folding behavior. The long period of PEG2000 always decreased upon aging-induced exclusion of APIs from the interlamellar region of extended chain crystals whereas the periodicity of PEG6000 may decrease or increase during storage as a consequence of the competition between the drug segregation and the lamellar thickening from nonintegral-folded into integral-folded chain crystals. These processes were in turn significantly influenced by the crystallization tendency of the pharmaceutical compounds, drug-polymer interactions, as well as the dispersion composition and crystallization temperature. This study highlights the significance of the polymer conformation on the microstructure of semicrystalline systems that is critical for the preparation of solid dispersions with consistent and reproducible quality.

Imaging Nanoscale Morphology of Semiconducting Polymer Films with Photoemission Electron Microscopy

Photoemission electron microscopy in combination with polarized laser light is presented as a tool permitting direct imaging of polymer-chain orientation and local degree of order in semicrystalline samples of semiconducting polymers, a promising class of materials for future electronics. The key advantages of this imaging tool are its nondestructive and fast measurements, straightforward data analysis, the low complexity of sample preparation, and the possibility of performing measurements on a broad variety of technologically relevant substrates. The high spatial resolution of the microscope provides insights into the nanoscale morphology, which is relevant for the material's performance in electronic devices.

New biosourced AA and AB monomers from 1,4:3,6-dianhydrohexitols, Isosorbide, Isomannide, and Isoidide

In the present work, we propose the synthesis of a new family of sugar derived 1,4:3,6-dianhydrohexitol based AA/AB-type monomers. Unprecedented diacids based on Isomannide and Isoidide were elaborated with high yields and showed interestingly high melting point ranges (240–375 °C). Optimization of reaction conditions (temperature, time of reaction, and reactant ratios) has been investigated to synthesize the key intermediate of a set of AB monomers with acid, ester, and acid chloride functionalities. Isosorbide based ether benzoic acid AB monomer was polymerized and characterized by NMR and DSC techniques. The results show a semicrystalline behavior of the obtained polymer thanks to the controlled stereoregular arrangement of the AB starting monomer.

Squid Sucker Ring Teeth: Multiscale Structure-Property Relationships, Sequencing, and Protein Engineering of a Thermoplastic Biopolymer

The arms and tentacles of Decapodiform cephalopods (squids and cuttlefish) are lined with suckers, each of which contains embedded sucker ring teeth (SRT), which are used by the animal for prey capture and handling. SRT exhibit intriguing physicochemical and thermomechanical characteristics that have so far not been observed in other protein-based biomaterials. Notably, despite their comparatively high mechanical properties, SRT are almost fully soluble in chaotropic solvents and can be readily reconstituted after solvent evaporation into three-dimensional structures. SRT also exhibit thermoplastic characteristics: they can be melted and reshaped multiple times with no-or only minimal-loss of mechanical performance postprocessing. Intrigued by these unusual material characteristics, in recent years, we have conducted in-depth fundamental studies to unveil structure/property relationships of SRT from the molecular (genetic) level to the macroscopic scale. These investigations have demonstrated that SRT are entirely assembled from a protein family called "suckerins" that self-assemble into semicrystalline polymer infinite networks. Suckerins are block copolymers at the molecular level, whose closest analogy appears to be silk fibroins, although significant differences exist between these two protein families. Parallel to these studies, there have been efforts to mimic and engineer suckerins by protein engineering and to demonstrate potential applications through proof-of-concept studies, with a focus on the biomedical field. Both fundamental aspects and emerging applications are presented in this short review. Given the rather unusual source of this model structure, we start by a brief historical account of SRT and suckerin discovery.
