High-Loading Smart Carrier Containing 2-Mercaptobenzimidazole-Zn2+-Polydopamine with pH-Responsive Function to Fabricate High-Performance Waterborne Epoxy Anticorrosion Coatings

Corrosion inhibitor additives are considered to be one of the effective methods to slow down the corrosion of metals, but the corrosion inhibitors will decompose and lose their effect in a long-term corrosive environment. In this work, a smart corrosion inhibitor carrier 2-mercaptobenzimidazole-Zn2+-polydopamine@graphite (MZPG) with excellent pH response was designed and synthesized using a one-pot method. This corrosion inhibitor carrier not only has a very high 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) loading capacity (38.0%) but also maintains a very low MBI activity to inhibit the decomposition of MZPG in the environment as much as possible. The MZPG/epoxy (MZPG/EP) coatings prepared by the spraying method showed excellent mechanical properties. Electrochemical and salt spray tests showed that the MZPG/EP coatings (1.20 × 1010 Ω·cm2) have excellent corrosion resistance with Rp values up to 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the EP coating (1.25 × 107 Ω·cm2). Notably, the MZPG/EP coatings maintained good corrosion resistance under acidic conditions due to the pH-responsive release of corrosion inhibitors. This is of great significance for the future development of coatings for highly corrosive environments.

Smart Inhibition Action of Amino Acid-Modified Layered Double Hydroxide and Its Application on Carbon Steel

Surface impregnation of concrete structures with a migrating corrosion inhibitor is a promising and non-invasive technique for increasing the lifetime of existing structures that already show signs of corrosion attack. The main requirement for inhibitors is their ability to diffuse the rebar at a sufficient rate to protect steel. The use of smart nanocontainers such as layered double hydroxides (LDH) to store corrosion inhibitors significantly increases efficiency by providing an active protection from chloride-induced corrosion. The addition of LDH to reinforced mortar can also improve the compactness and mechanical properties of this matrix. Here, we report the synthesis of a magnesium-aluminum LDH storing glutamine amino acid as a green inhibitor (labeled as Mg-Al-Gln), which can be used as a migrating inhibitor on mortar specimens. The corrosion behavior of the specimens was determined via electrochemical techniques based on measurements of corrosion potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A cell containing a 3.5% NaCl solution was applied to the mortar surface to promote the corrosion of embedded rebars. The specimens treated with Mg-Al-Gln presented an improved corrosion protection performance, exhibiting an increase in polarization resistance (Rp) compared to the reference specimens without an inhibitor (NO INH). This effect is a consequence of a double mechanism of protection/stimuli-responsive release of glutamine and the removal of corrosive chloride species from the medium.

Stimuli-Responsive Nanoparticles for Controlled Drug Delivery in Synergistic Cancer Immunotherapy

Cancer immunotherapy has achieved promising clinical progress over the recent years for its potential to treat metastatic tumors and inhibit their recurrences effectively. However, low patient response rates and dose-limiting toxicity remain as major dilemmas for immunotherapy. Stimuli-responsive nanoparticles (srNPs) combined with immunotherapy offer the possibility to amplify anti-tumor immune responses, where the weak acidity, high concentration of glutathione, overexpressions of enzymes, and reactive oxygen species, and external stimuli in tumors act as triggers for controlled drug release. This review highlights the design of srNPs based on tumor microenvironment and/or external stimuli to combine with different anti-tumor drugs, especially the immunoregulatory agents, which eventually realize synergistic immunotherapy of malignant primary or metastatic tumors and acquire a long-term immune memory to prevent tumor recurrence. The authors hope that this review can provide theoretical guidance for the construction and clinical transformation of smart srNPs for controlled drug delivery in synergistic cancer immunotherapy.

Fabricating β-cyclodextrin based pH-responsive nanotheranostics as a programmable polymeric nanocapsule for simultaneous diagnosis and therapy

Background

Fabrication of a smart drug delivery system that could dramatically increase the efficiency of chemotherapeutic drugs and reduce the side effects is still a challenge for pharmaceutical researchers. By the emergence of nanotechnology, a huge window was opened towards this goal, and a wide type of nanocarriers were introduced for delivering the chemotherapeutic to the cancer cells, among them are cyclodextrins with the ability to host different types of hydrophobic bioactive molecules through inclusion complexation process.

Aim

The aim of this study is to design and fabricate a pH-responsive theranostic nanocapsule based on cyclodextrin supramolecular nano-structure.

Materials and methods

This nanostructure contains iron oxide nanoparticles in the core surrounded with three polymeric layers including polymeric β-cyclodextrin, polyacrylic acid conjugated to sulfadiazine, and polyethylenimine functionalized with β-cyclodextrin. Sulfadiazine is a pH-responsive hydrophobic component capable of making inclusion complex with β-cyclodextrin available in the first and third layers. Doxorubicin, as an anti-cancer drug model, was chosen and the drug loading and release pattern were determined at normal and acidic pH. Moreover, the biocompatibility of the nanocapsule (with/without drug component) was examined using different techniques such as MTT assay, complement activation, coagulation assay, and hemolysis.

Results

The results revealed the successful preparation of a spherical nanocapsule with mean size 43±1.5 nm and negatively charge of −43 mV that show 160% loading efficacy. Moreover, the nanocapsule has an on/off switching release pattern in response to pH that leads to drug released in low acidic pH. The results of the biocompatibility tests indicated that this nano drug delivery system had no effect on blood and immune components while it could affect cancer cells even at very low concentrations (0.3 μg mL⁻¹).

Conclusion

The obtained results suggest that this is a “switchable” theranostic nanocapsule with potential application as an ideal delivery system for simultaneous cancer diagnosis and therapy.
