Long-Term Straw Incorporation under Controlled Irrigation Improves Soil Quality of Paddy Field and Rice Yield in Northeast China

Soil quality is an indicator of the ability to ensure ecological security and sustainable soil usage. The effects of long-term straw incorporation and different irrigation regimes on the yield and soil quality of paddy fields in cold regions remain unclear. This study established four treatments: controlled irrigation + continuous straw incorporation for 3 years (C3), controlled irrigation + continuous straw incorporation for 7 years (C7), flooded irrigation + continuous straw incorporation for 3 years (F3), and flooded irrigation + continuous straw incorporation for 7 years (F7). Analysis was conducted on the impact of various irrigation regimes and straw incorporation years on the physicochemical characteristics and quality of the soil. The soil quality index (SQI) for rice fields was computed using separate datasets for each treatment. The soil nitrate nitrogen, available phosphorus, soil organic carbon, and soil organic matter contents of the C7 were 93.51%, 5.80%, 8.90%, and 8.26% higher compared to C3, respectively. In addition, the yield of the C7 treatment was 5.18%, 4.89%, and 10.32% higher than those of F3, C3, and F7, respectively. The validity of the minimum data set (MDS) was verified by correlation, Ef and ER, which indicated that the MDS of all treatments were able to provide a valid evaluation of soil quality. The MDS based SQI of C7 was 11.05%, 11.97%, and 27.71% higher than that of F3, C3, and F7, respectively. Overall, long-term straw incorporation combined with controlled irrigation increases yield and soil quality in paddy fields in cold regions. This study provides a thorough assessment of soil quality concerning irrigation regimes and straw incorporation years to preserve food security and the sustainability of agricultural output. Additionally, it offers a basis for soil quality diagnosis of paddy fields in the Northeast China.

Evaluating the Soil Quality Index Using Three Methods to Assess Soil Fertility

Soil health plays a crucial role in crop production, both in terms of quality and quantity, highlighting the importance of effective methods for preserving soil quality to ensure global food security. Soil quality indices (SQIs) have been widely utilized as comprehensive measures of soil function by integrating multiple physical, chemical, and biological soil properties. Traditional SQI analysis involves laborious and costly laboratory analyses, which limits its practicality. To overcome this limitation, our study explores the use of visible near-infrared (vis-NIR) spectroscopy as a rapid and non-destructive alternative for predicting soil properties and SQIs. This study specifically focused on seven soil indicators that contribute to soil fertility, including pH, organic matter (OM), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), available phosphorous (P), and total nitrogen (TN). These properties play key roles in nutrient availability, pH regulation, and soil structure, influencing soil fertility and overall soil health. By utilizing vis-NIR spectroscopy, we were able to accurately predict the soil indicators with good accuracy using the Cubist model (R2 = 0.35-0.93), offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional laboratory analyses. Using the seven soil indicators, we looked at three different approaches for calculating and predicting the SQI, including: (1) measured SQI (SQI_m), which is derived from laboratory-measured soil properties; (2) predicted SQI (SQI_p), which is calculated using predicted soil properties from spectral data; and (3) direct prediction of SQI (SQI_dp), The findings demonstrated that SQI_dp exhibited a higher accuracy (R2 = 0.90) in predicting soil quality compared to SQI_p (R2 = 0.23).

Soil quality and ecological benefits assessment of alpine desertified grassland following different ecological restoration measures

Introduction

Soil quality plays an irreplaceable role in plant growth for restored grassland. However, few studies investigate the comprehensive effects considering soil and vegetation properties during the restoration of desertified grassland, which restrict the virtuous circle of restored grassland ecosystem.

Methods

By setting three restoration patterns of enclosure plus grass (EG), enclosure intercropping shrub-grass (ESG), and enclosure plus sand-barrier and shrub-grass (ESSG) with three different restoration years (≤5, 7-9, and ≥15 years), we selected 28 physicochemical and microbial indicators, and constructed a minimum data set (MDS) to analyze the influences of restoration measurements on soil quality and ecological benefits in alpine desertified grassland.

Results

The results showed that the MDS comprised seven soil quality indicators: silt, total nitrogen (TN), carbon-nitrogen ratio (C/N), total potassium (TK), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP), and fungi. Soil quality index (SQI) and ecological restoration effect index (EREI) in restored grasslands significantly increased by 144.83-561.24% and 87.21-422.12%, respectively, compared with unrestored grassland, and their positive effects increased with extending restoration years. The increasing effects of SQI and EREI were the highest in ESSG, followed by EG and ESG. The increasing rate of SQI began to decrease after 5 years in EG and ESG, while it decreased after 7-9 years in ESSG, and that of EREI in EG was lower than ESSG in each restoration year. Our work revealed that ESSG was the optimum restoration pattern for desertified grassland, and anthropogenic monitoring and management measurements such as applying organic fertilization and mowing return reasonably should be carried out at the beginning of 5 years in EG and ESG as well as 7 years in ESSG to maintain sustainable ecological benefits.

Discussion

The study highlights that soil quality, including microbial properties, is a key factor to evaluate the restoration effects of desertified grassland.

[Effects of combined application of biochar and nitrogen fertilizer on soil quality of summer maize-winter wheat system]

The effects of nitrogen fertilizer and biochar on topsoil quality in the drylands of northwest China were studied in field trials for two years. A split plot design with two factors was adopted, with five nitrogen rates (0, 75, 150, 225 and 300 kg N·hm^-2) as main plots, and two rates of biochar (0 and 7.5 t·hm^-2) as submain plots. We collected soil samples at 0-15 cm depth after two years of winter wheat-summer maize rotation and measured physical, chemical, and biological properties. The minimum data set (MDS) was established by using principal component analysis and correlation analysis to analyze the responses of soil quality to nitrogen fertilizer and biochar addition. The results showed that the combined application of nitrogen fertilizer and biochar could improve soil physical properties, increase macroaggregate content, reduce soil bulk density, and increase soil porosity. Both fertilizer application and biochar application had a significant effect on soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen. The application of biochar could improve soil urease activity and the contents of soil nutrients and organic carbon. Six out of 16 indicators (urease, microbial biomass carbon, total phosphorous, total nitrogen, pH, and available potassium) relating to soil quality were used to construct MDS, and soil quality index (SQI) was calculated. The variation range of SQI was 0.14-0.87, with that of 225 and 300 kg N·hm^-2 nitrogen application combined with biochar application being significantly higher than other treatments. Soil quality could be significantly improved by application of nitrogen fertilizer and biochar. Interactive effect was observed, which was particularly stronger under high nitrogen application rate.

Soil Quality Assessment in Tourism-Disturbed Subtropical Mountain Meadow Areas of Wugong Mountain, Central Southeast China

Meadow soil is a vital ecosystem component and can be influenced by meadow vegetation. Evaluating soil quality in mountain meadows subjected to different levels of tourism disturbance is essential for scientific research, ecological restoration, and sustainable management. This study aimed to evaluate meadow soil quality at different tourism-disturbance levels and attempted to establish a minimum data set (MDS) with compatible indicators for soil quality assessment of subtropical mountain meadows. We analyzed fifteen soil physical, chemical, and biological indicators in control check (CK), light disturbance (LD), medium disturbance (MD), and severe disturbance (SD) meadow areas in Wugong Mountain, west of Jiangxi, China. In addition, a soil quality index (SQI) was determined using the established MDS based on the integrated soil quality index. Average soil permeability, soil pH, available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and number of fungal OTUs were finally introduced into the MDS to evaluate meadow soil quality at different tourism-disturbance levels. The study found that the soil of the Wugong Mountain meadow was acidic, the bulk density was loose, and the nutrient content was rich. Additionally, SQI decreased with increase in tourism-disturbance level. The mean SQI values of the Wugong Mountain meadow areas were: CK, 0.612; LD, 0.493; MD, 0.448; and SD, 0.416. Our results demonstrate that the SQI based on the MDS method could be a valuable tool with which to indicate the soil quality of mountain meadow areas, and the SQI can be regarded as a primary indicator of ecological restoration and sustainable management.

Changes in Soil Physico-Chemical and Microbiological Properties During Natural Succession: A Case Study in Lower Subtropical China

Vegetation succession can change the function and quality of the soil. Exploring the changes in soil properties during secondary forest restoration is of great significance to promote forest restoration and improve the ecological service function of subtropical ecosystems in South China. In this study, we chose three typical forests in subtropical China as restoration sequences, broadleaf-conifer mixed forest (EF), broad-leaved forest (MF), and old-growth forest (LF), to study the changes in soil physico-chemical and biological properties and the changes of soil comprehensive quality during the secondary succession of subtropical forest. The results showed that the soil physical structure was optimized with the progress of forest succession. The soil bulk density decreased gradually with the progress of forest restoration, which was significantly affected by soil organic carbon (p < 0.01). In LF, the soil moisture increased significantly (p < 0.05), and its value can reach 47.85 ± 1.93%, which is consistent with the change of soil porosity. With the recovery process, soil nutrients gradually accumulated. Except for total phosphorus (TP), there was obvious surface enrichment of soil nutrients. Soil organic carbon (15.43 ± 2.28 g/kg), total nitrogen (1.08 ± 0.12 g/kg), and total phosphorus (0.43 ± 0.03 g/kg) in LF were significantly higher than those in EF (p < 0.05). The soil available nutrients, that is, soil available phosphorus and available potassium decreased significantly in LF (p < 0.05). In LF, more canopy interception weakened the P limitation caused by atmospheric acid deposition, so that the soil C:P (37.68 ± 4.76) and N:P (2.49 ± 0.24) in LF were significantly lower than those in EF (p < 0.05). Affected by TP and moisture, microbial biomass C and microbial biomass N increased significantly in LF, and the mean values were 830.34 ± 30.34 mg/kg and 46.60 ± 2.27 mg/kg, respectively. Further analysis showed that total soil porosity (TSP) and TP (weighted value of 0.61) contributed the most to the final soil quality index (SQI). With the forest restoration, the SQI gradually increased, especially in LF the value of SQI was up to 0.84, which was significantly higher than that in EF and MF (p < 0.05). This result is of great significance to understanding the process of restoration of subtropical forests and improving the management scheme of subtropical secondary forests.

Soil chemical quality assessment and spatial distribution of pomelo orchards in acidic red soil hilly regions of China

BACKGROUND

Soil quality assessment is a critical strategy for determining optimum fertilization in intensive pomelo production. In this study, we evaluated the soil quality status and mapped the spatial distribution of 347 soil samples collected from pomelo orchards in Pinghe County, southern China. We analyzed nine chemical parameters and an altitude indicator.

RESULTS

The mean soil quality index (SQI) was 0.355 in the total data set (TDS) and 0.292 in the minimum data set (MDS). Available Ca (Avail-Ca), pH value, organic matter and altitude were selected as indicators of soil quality in the MDS. The SQI in mature orchards (>10 years) was higher than that in young orchards (<10 years), while no differences between soil types and altitude gradients were identified. We detected a significant positive correlation between the SQI based on TDS (SQI_TDS ) and the SQI based on MDS (SQI_MDS ), and the spatial distribution of soil properties and SQI_TDS showed a uniform pattern, except for Avail-N, Avail-B and SQI_MDS . Overall, unfavorable soil quality indicators, including rich in Avail-P, deficient in Avail-Ca, -Mg and -B, soil acidification and high altitude, were considered to be limiting factors for pomelo production.

CONCLUSION

The soil chemical quality in pomelo orchards is generally low, indicating that integrated management by controlling acidification, reducing planting altitude, regulating fertilization and monitoring soil properties is required for sustainable pomelo production. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Do Wildfires Cause Changes in Soil Quality in the Short Term?

Wildfires have high frequency and intensity in the Mediterranean ecosystems that deeply modify the soil abiotic (i.e., pH, contents of water, organic matter and elements) and biotic properties (i.e., biomass and activity). In 2017, an intense wildfire occurred inside the Vesuvius National Park (Southern Italy), destroying approximately 50% of the existing plant cover. So, the research aimed to evaluate the fire effects on soil quality through single soil abiotic and biotic indicators and through an integrated index (SQI). To achieve the aim, soil samples were collected inside the Vesuvius National Park at 12 sampling field points before fire (BF) and after fire (AF). The findings highlighted that in AF soil, the contents of water and total carbon, element availability, respiration and the dehydrogenase activity were lower than in BF soil; in contrast, pH and hydrolase activity were significantly higher in AF soil. The microbial biomass and activity were affected by Al, Cr and Cu availability in both BF and AF soils. Despite the variations in each investigated soil abiotic and biotic property that occurred in AF soil, the overall soil quality did not significantly differ as compared to that calculated for the BF soil. The findings provide a contribution to the baseline definition of the properties and quality of burnt soil and highlight the short-term effects of fire on volcanic soil in the Mediterranean area.
