[Influence of landscape pattern on elevation effect of δ18O in surface water in Hani Terrace]

With the Quanfuzhuang River basin located at Hani Rice Terrace core region as study area, we analyzed the isotopic composition and the effects of 12 surface water sampling sites for the forest landscape type and terrace landscape type from May 2015 to April 2016. The results showed that: 1) For the variation of isotope composition, both the average value and the variation range of δ¹⁸O in surface water under forest patches were smaller than that under terrace patches. 2) The overall elevation effect of the hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes in surface water was obvious, except that in August and March, which could be expressed as the linear regression equation δ¹⁸O=-0.012H+13.84 (r=-0.83, n=12). 3) The altitude gradient of δ¹⁸O in surface water was -1.2‰·(100 m)^-1, which was not the true altitude gradient affected by precipitation but by landscape gradient of δ¹⁸O in surface water between forest patches and terrace patches. 4) Under the "Forest-Terrace" landscape pattern, the δ¹⁸O differences in surface water between forest patches and terrace patches enhanced the elevation effect. Therefore, when landscape heterogeneity was strong, isotopic effect was strengthened, even with opposite isotope effect.

[Stable Isotopes of Precipitation in the Eastern Tarim River Basin and Water Vapor Sources]

The in-situ monitoring of stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) in precipitation is helpful to understand the processes of water phase change, mixing, and transportation. Due to the arid climate in the eastern Tarim River basin, water resources are the key factor affecting the regional sustainable development. However, the understanding of stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in precipitation is still limited for this region. Based on the isotope data of 103 precipitation samples collected at four stations in the eastern Tarim River basin from June 2019 to September 2020, the spatial and temporal characteristics of stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in precipitation were analyzed, and the connections between stable isotopes and moisture sources were discussed. The findings provide a reference for the application of environmental isotope tracers in arid areas. The results show that, ① the four sampling stations generally presented an increasing trend in precipitation stable isotopic values from north to south, and the isotopic values were higher in summer and lower in winter. The d-excess value in the study region was smaller than the national average, and the slope of the local meteoric water line exhibited a significant arid characteristic. ② There was a positive correlation between precipitation stable isotopes and air temperature in the study region, whereas a weak negative relationship was seen between d-excess and air temperature. The negative correlation occurred between δ¹⁸O and relative humidity, and the d-excess value exhibited a positive correlation with relative humidity. ③ The backward trajectory showed that the eastern Tarim River basin is mainly controlled by the westerlies paths. The proportion of air mass that comes from the middle and short distance is relatively large. The concentration weighted trajectory method showed that the farther from the precipitation sampling site, the more stable the d-excess value was. The closer to the sampling site, the more frequently the concentration changed, indicating that the d-excess value was greatly affected by the local water vapor recycling.

[Long-term water use characteristics and patterns of typical tree species in seasonal drought regions]

In the areas with seasonal drought, water is the key factor affecting plant growth and development. Based on long-term continuous observation data, it is of great significance to explore plant water use patterns for vegetation construction in areas with seasonal drought. Taking Platycladus orientalis in Beijing mountainous area as the research object, stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope technique was applied to measure the isotopic composition of water from the soil, plant branches, and precipitation from 2012 to 2017. The relative contribution of soil water from different soil layers to P. orientalis was quantified by the MixSIAR model. The results showed that soil water in the deep layer (40-100 cm) was more stable than that in the shallow layer (0-40 cm). The variation of soil water content and water isotope values in the shallow layer were more obvious due to the effects of evaporation and precipitation. P. orientalis mainly absorbed stable deep soil water, with a relative contribution rate of 55.7%. In the dry season, with the decreases of soil water content, the absorption depth of plants to soil water gradually shifted to the shallow layer. Under conditions of moist, natural condition, mild drought and moderate drought, the relative contribution rates of deep soil water were 59.8%, 57.9%, 54.6%, 52.7%, respectively. To maintain higher transpiration in the wet season, P. orientalis relied more on deep soil water under mild and moderate drought conditions than in the dry season. Under the conditions of moist, natural condition, mild drought and moderate drought, the relative contribution rates of deep soil water were 58.9%, 57.6%, 56.4%, and 57.1%, respectively. The adaptive characteristic of P. orientalis, which adjusts the depth of root water absorption according to soil moisture condition, is of great significance for tree species selection in ecological afforestation and long-term management planning in areas with seasonal drought.

[Characteristics of Stable Isotopes and Moisture Sources of Two Typical Precipitation Events in Lanzhou City]

To better understand the isotope variations on a short time scale, this study focused on a long-term rainfall event with light precipitation (June 26-27) and a short-term one with heavy precipitation (July 28) in Lanzhou City in the summer of 2019. Combined with HYSPLIT model, samples collected during a continuous precipitation event every 10 min and 30 min were analyzed to explore the characteristics and mechanism of stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in precipitation. The results indicate that the effect of sub-cloud secondary evaporation makes the slope of the sequential meteoric water line (SMWL) smaller at the beginning of the rainfall event. Most of the continuous sampling points are distributed above the global meteoric water line (GMWL) and local meteoric water line (LMWL). Moreover, the deuterium excess is larger than the local average annual deuterium (8.13), indicating that the samples have experienced moisture recycling to a certain extent. During two consecutive days (June 26-27) of rainfall, the variations in oxygen isotope δ¹⁸O did not follow the effect of precipitation amount; the precipitation δ¹⁸O of the first day was "L" shaped, and it fluctuated the next day. On July 28, δ¹⁸O steadily decreased, and the range of δ¹⁸O exceeded 9‰. On June 26, the moisture transport path was short at the height of 500 m and on June 27 local evaporation was the main pathway. On July 28, with a relatively stable air mass, the moisture source of the entire precipitation event did not change significantly, neither did the isotope value. Therefore, for a single precipitation event on a short time scale, the difference in moisture sources is one of the reasons for isotope variations.
