A Detailed Numerical Model for a New Composite Slim-Floor Slab System

The paper concerns the numerical modelling of a new slim-floor system with innovative steel-concrete composite beams called "hybrid beams". Hybrid beams consist of a high-strength TT inverted cross-section steel profile and a concrete core made of high-performance concrete and are jointed with prestressed hollow core slabs by infill concrete and tie reinforcement. Such systems are gaining popularity since they allow the integration of the main structural members within the ceiling depth, shorten the execution time, and reduce the use of concrete and steel. A three-dimensional finite element model is proposed with all parts of the system taken into account and detailed geometry reproduction. Advanced constitutive models are adopted for steel and concrete. Special attention is paid to the proper characterisation of interfaces. The new approach to calibration of damaged elastic traction-separation constitutive model for cohesive elements is applied to concrete-to-concrete contact zones. The model is validated with outcomes of experimental field tests and analytical calculations. A satisfactory agreement between different assessment methods is obtained. The model can be used in the development phase of a new construction system, for instance, to plan further experimental campaigns or to calibrate simplified design formulas.

Changes in Frequency and Mode Shapes Due to Damage in Steel-Concrete Composite Beam

This study presents an analysis of changes in the vibration frequency and mode of vibration of a composite beam due to damage. A steel–concrete composite beam was considered, for which numerical analysis (RFE model) and experimental tests were conducted. Two levels of damage were introduced to the beam. To determine the changes in the mode of vibration before and after the damage, the modal assurance criterion (MAC) and its partial variation (PMAC) were applied. The curvature damage factor (CDF) was used to determine the changes in the modal curvature. The natural frequencies were sensitive to the introduced damage. The results show that the MAC is not effective in determining the location of damage in the connection plane. Two different coefficients were introduced to locate the damage. The PMAC was used for sections of subsequent modes of vibration and allowed effectively locating the damage. The CDF considered simultaneous changes in the curvatures of all vibration modes and was effective in locating the damage in the connection plane.

Optimal Design of Steel-Concrete Composite Beams Strengthened under Load

This paper presents results of numerical analysis and experimental research on strengthening of steel–concrete composite beams. Studied members consisted of IPE200 I-beam and 90 × 700 mm reinforced concrete slab. The steel part of the section was strengthened by welding additional steel plates at the bottom. The study was performed for plate thickness ranging between 6 to 22 mm. Spatial FEM models were developed to account for material and geometric nonlinearities and for stress and post-welding strain. Proposed numerical models were experimentally validated. One aim was to find an optimum solution which would minimize cost and maximize bending capacity. To achieve this, energy parameters available in numerical simulations were reviewed and analyzed. Recoverable strain energy value determined in Abaqus was used to find the optimum solution.
