Enhanced Rates of Transition-Metal-Ion-Catalyzed Oxidation of S(IV) in Aqueous Aerosols: Insights into Sulfate Aerosol Formation in the Atmosphere

The oxidation of S(IV) is a critical step in the fate of sulfur dioxide emissions that determines the amount of sulfate aerosol in the atmosphere. Herein, we measured accelerated S(IV) oxidation rates in micron-sized aqueous aerosols compared to bulk solutions. We have investigated both buffered and unbuffered systems across a range of pH values in the presence of atmospherically relevant transition-metal ions and salts and consistently found the oxidation rate to be accelerated by ca. 1-2 orders of magnitude in the aerosol. This enhancement is greater than can be explained by the enrichment of species in the aerosol compared to the bulk and indicates that surface effects and potentially aerosol pH gradients play important roles in the S(IV) oxidation process in the aqueous aerosol. In addition, our experiments were performed with dissolved S(IV) ions (SO₃^2-/HSO₃^-), allowing us to demonstrate that acceleration occurs in the condensed phase showing that enhanced sulfate formation is not exclusively due to gas-aerosol partitioning or interfacial SO₂ oxidation. Our findings are an important step forward in understanding larger than expected sulfate concentrations observed in the atmosphere and show that inorganic oxidation processes can be accelerated in micron-sized aqueous droplets compared to the bulk solution.

Stereoselective Gold(I)-Catalyzed Vinylcyclopropanation via Generation of a Sulfur-Substituted Vinyl Carbene Equivalent

A stereoselective gold(I)-catalyzed vinylcyclopropanation of alkenes has been developed. A gold-coordinated cationic vinyl carbene species, readily generated via a rearrangement of the ethylenedithioacetal of propargyl aldehyde, reacts with a wide range of alkenes to afford thio-substituted vinylcyclopropanes. The gold-catalyzed vinyl cyclopropanation proceeds under mild conditions at room temperature and is generally selective for the formation of cis-substituted cyclopropanes. The reaction allows the formal introduction of a "naked" vinyl carbene, by subsequent chemoselective hydrodesulfurisation of the ethylenedithio-bridge. The synthetic utility of the new method is demonstrated by a short, racemic formal synthesis of the alkaloid cephalotaxin, hinging on a key vinyl cyclopropane-cyclopentene rearrangement.

Core-Substituted Naphthalenediimides: LUMO Levels Revisited, in Comparison with Preylenediimides with Sulfur Redox Switches in the Core

Core‐substituted naphthalenediimides (NDIs) attract increasing attention to bind, transport, and transform electrons, anions, anionic intermediates, and anionic transition states, and to shine as most colorful rainbow fluorophores. The energy level of their lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) is decisive for many of these applications. Here, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) measurements for a consistent series of NDIs are reported to extract exact LUMO levels under identical conditions. The influence of primary and secondary substituents in the core and on the primary imides is compared with general trends for the reliable prediction of LUMO levels in functional systems. Emphasis is on sulfur redox switches in the NDI core because of their frequent use as isostructural probes for π acidity. The same sulfur redox chemistry is expanded to perylenediimides (PDIs), and LUMO engineering is discussed in a broader context, including also fullerenes, aminonaphthalimides (ANIs), and aminoperyleneimides (APIs). The result is a comprehensive reference table that graphically maps out the LUMO space covered by the leading families of electronaccepting aromatics. This graphical summary of general trends in the π‐acidic space is expected to be both inspiring and quite useful in practice.

Advances in the synthesis of functionalised pyrrolotetrathiafulvalenes

The electron-donor and unique redox properties of the tetrathiafulvalene (TTF, 1) moiety have led to diverse applications in many areas of chemistry. Monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalenes (MPTTFs, 4) and bispyrrolotetrathiafulvalenes (BPTTFs, 5) are useful structural motifs and have found widespread use in fields such as supramolecular chemistry and molecular electronics. Protocols enabling the synthesis of functionalised MPTTFs and BPTTFs are therefore of broad interest. Herein, we present the synthesis of a range of functionalised MPTTF and BPTTF species. Firstly, the large-scale preparation of the precursor species N-tosyl-(1,3)-dithiolo[4,5-c]pyrrole-2-one (6) is described, as well as the synthesis of the analogue N-tosyl-4,6-dimethyl-(1,3)-dithiolo[4,5-c]pyrrole-2-one (7). Thereafter, we show how 6 and 7 can be used to prepare BPTTFs using homocoupling reactions and functionalised MPTTFs using cross-coupling reactions with a variety of 1,3-dithiole-2-thiones (19). Subsequently, the incorporation of more complex functionality is discussed. We show how the 2-cyanoethyl protecting group can be used to afford MPTTFs functionalised with thioethers, exemplified by a series of ethylene glycol derivatives. Additionally, the merits of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) as an alternative to the most common deprotecting agent, CsOH·H2O are discussed. Finally, we show how a copper-mediated Ullman-type reaction can be applied to the N-arylation of MPTTFs and BPTTFs using a variety of aryl halides.

Insight into sulfur reactions in Li-S batteries

Understanding and controlling the sulfur reduction species (Li2Sx, 1 ≤ x ≤ 8) under realistic battery conditions are essential for the development of advanced practical Li-S cells that can reach their full theoretical capacity. However, it has been a great challenge to probe the sulfur reduction intermediates and products because of the lack of methods. This work employed various ex situ and in situ methods to study the mechanism of the Li-S redox reactions and the properties of Li2Sx and Li2S. Synchrotron high-energy X-ray diffraction analysis used to characterize dry powder deposits from lithium polysulfide solution suggests that the new crystallite phase may be lithium polysulfides. The formation of Li2S crystallites with a polyhedral structure was observed in cells with both the conventional (LiTFSI) electrolyte and polysulfide-based electrolyte. In addition, an in situ transmission electron microscopy experiment observed that the lithium diffusion to sulfur during discharge preferentially occurred at the sulfur surface and formed a solid Li2S crust. This may be the reason for the capacity fade in Li-S cells (as also suggested by EIS experiment in Supporting Information ). The results can be a guide for future studies and control of the sulfur species and meanwhile a baseline for approaching the theoretical capacity of the Li-S battery.

A facile and efficient procedure for the synthesis of new benzimidazole-2-thione derivatives

A series of benzimidazole-2-thione derivatives was synthesized using a reaction between the macrocyclic aminal 16H,13H-5:12,7:14-dimethanedibenzo[d,i]-[1,3,6,8] tetraazecine (DMDBTA, 5) and various nucleophiles in the presence of carbon disulfide. A full chemical characterization using IR, ¹H-, ¹³C-NMR and GC-MS analyses of the new compounds is provided. These compounds were separated from the reaction mixture by column chromatography (CC) in highly pure form in 15%-51.4% yield.
