[Analysis of the Jumping Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Ozone Pollution in Beijing]

Based on environmental monitoring data and meteorological observation data from 2016 to 2022 in Beijing, combined with backward trajectory clustering and potential source area contribution analysis, the characteristics, meteorological impacts, and potential source areas of ozone (O3) pollution were analyzed. The results showed that there was a total of 41 O3 pollution processes with jumping characteristics in Beijing from 2016 to 2022, with an average of 5.9 times a year. The occurrence time was concentrated in May to July, and the day of the jump (OJD2) was higher than the day before the jump (OJD1). The average value of ρ(O3-8h) was 78.3% higher, and the peak concentration was 78.9% higher. The high O3 concentration zone in the OJD2 region exhibited a characteristic of advancing from south to north. The main reasons for the occurrence of jumped O3 pollution in Beijing could be summarized as local accumulation caused by unfavorable meteorological conditions and regional transmission impact. The occurrence of jump-type ozone pollution was characterized by an increase in southerly wind frequency, temperature rise, pressure decrease, and precipitation decrease. The increase in southerly wind frequency provided conditions for the transport of O3 and its precursors, and rapid photochemical reactions occurred under local high temperatures, with less superimposed precipitation, comprehensively pushing up the ozone concentration level of OJD2. Six air mass transporting pathways were identified through clustering analysis; the air mass from the direction north of OJD2 decreased by 11.2%, whereas the air mass from the south and east directions increased by 6.7% and 4.4%, respectively, with the air masses mainly transmitting over short distances. The ozone concentration corresponding to the south and east directions was relatively high, making a significant contribution to Beijing's pollution. The analysis of potential source areas revealed that the main potential source areas of OJD2 ozone pollution were the central, southern, and eastern parts of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, which contributed 82.6% to the pollution trajectory. There was a significant contribution of regional transport during jump-type ozone pollution, and it is necessary to strengthen joint prevention and control in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region.

Joint modelling of mental health markers through pregnancy: a Bayesian semi-parametric approach

Maternal depression and anxiety through pregnancy have lasting societal impacts. It is thus crucial to understand the trajectories of its progression from preconception to postnatal period, and the risk factors associated with it. Within the Bayesian framework, we propose to jointly model seven outcomes, of which two are physiological and five non-physiological indicators of maternal depression and anxiety over time. We model the former two by a Gaussian process and the latter by an autoregressive model, while imposing a multidimensional Dirichlet process prior on the subject-specific random effects to account for subject heterogeneity and induce clustering. The model allows for the inclusion of covariates through a regression term. Our findings reveal four distinct clusters of trajectories of the seven health outcomes, characterising women's mental health progression from before to after pregnancy. Importantly, our results caution against the loose use of hair corticosteroids as a biomarker, or even a causal factor, for pregnancy mental health progression. Additionally, the regression analysis reveals a range of preconception determinants and risk factors for depressive and anxiety symptoms during pregnancy.

Dynamic Maritime Traffic Pattern Recognition with Online Cleaning, Compression, Partition, and Clustering of AIS Data

Maritime traffic pattern recognition plays a major role in intelligent transportation services, ship monitoring, route planning, and other fields. Facilitated by the establishment of terrestrial networks and satellite constellations of the automatic identification system (AIS), large quantities of spatial and temporal information make ships' paths trackable and are useful in maritime traffic pattern research. The maritime traffic pattern may vary with changes in the traffic environment, so the recognition method of the maritime traffic pattern should be adaptable to changes in the traffic environment. To achieve this goal, a dynamic maritime traffic pattern recognition method is presented using AIS data, which are cleaned, compressed, partitioned, and clustered online. Old patterns are removed as expired trajectories are deleted, and new patterns are created as new trajectories are added. This method is suitable for processing massive stream data. Experiments show that when the marine traffic route changes due to the navigation environment, the maritime traffic pattern adjusts automatically.

Multi-layer Trajectory Clustering: a Network Algorithm for Disease Subtyping

Many diseases display heterogeneity in clinical features and their progression, indicative of the existence of disease subtypes. Extracting patterns of disease variable progression for subtypes has tremendous application in medicine, for example, in early prognosis and personalized medical therapy. This work presents a novel, data-driven, network-based Trajectory Clustering (TC) algorithm for identifying Parkinson's subtypes based on disease trajectory. Modeling patient-variable interactions as a bipartite network, TC first extracts communities of co-expressing disease variables at different stages of progression. Then, it identifies Parkinson's subtypes by clustering similar patient trajectories that are characterized by severity of disease variables through a multi-layer network. Determination of trajectory similarity accounts for direct overlaps between trajectories as well as second-order similarities, i.e., common overlap with a third set of trajectories. This work clusters trajectories across two types of layers: (a) temporal, and (b) ranges of independent outcome variable (representative of disease severity), both of which yield four distinct subtypes. The former subtypes exhibit differences in progression of disease domains (Cognitive, Mental Health etc.), whereas the latter subtypes exhibit different degrees of progression, i.e., some remain mild, whereas others show significant deterioration after 5 years. The TC approach is validated through statistical analyses and consistency of the identified subtypes with medical literature. This generalizable and robust method can easily be extended to other progressive multi-variate disease datasets, and can effectively assist in targeted subtype-specific treatment in the field of personalized medicine.

A Trajectory Collaboration Based Map Matching Approach for Low-Sampling-Rate GPS Trajectories

GPS (Global Positioning System) trajectories with low sampling rates are prevalent in many applications. However, current map matching methods do not perform well for low-sampling-rate GPS trajectories due to the large uncertainty between consecutive GPS points. In this paper, a collaborative map matching method (CMM) is proposed for low-sampling-rate GPS trajectories. CMM processes GPS trajectories in batches. First, it groups similar GPS trajectories into clusters and then supplements the missing information by resampling. A collaborative GPS trajectory is then extracted for each cluster and matched to the road network, based on longest common subsequence (LCSS) distance. Experiments are conducted on a real GPS trajectory dataset and a simulated GPS trajectory dataset. The results show that the proposed CMM outperforms the baseline methods in both, effectiveness and efficiency.

IBVis: Interactive Visual Analytics for Information Bottleneck Based Trajectory Clustering

Analyzing trajectory data plays an important role in practical applications, and clustering is one of the most widely used techniques for this task. The clustering approach based on information bottleneck (IB) principle has shown its effectiveness for trajectory data, in which a predefined number of the clusters and an explicit distance measure between trajectories are not required. However, presenting directly the final results of IB clustering gives no clear idea of both trajectory data and clustering process. Visual analytics actually provides a powerful methodology to address this issue. In this paper, we present an interactive visual analytics prototype called IBVis to supply an expressive investigation of IB-based trajectory clustering. IBVis provides various views to graphically present the key components of IB and the current clustering results. Rich user interactions drive different views work together, so as to monitor and steer the clustering procedure and to refine the results. In this way, insights on how to make better use of IB for different featured trajectory data can be gained for users, leading to better analyzing and understanding trajectory data. The applicability of IBVis has been evidenced in usage scenarios. In addition, the conducted user study shows IBVis is well designed and helpful for users.

An Adaptive Trajectory Clustering Method Based on Grid and Density in Mobile Pattern Analysis

Clustering analysis is one of the most important issues in trajectory data mining. Trajectory clustering can be widely applied in the detection of hotspots, mobile pattern analysis, urban transportation control, and hurricane prediction, etc. To obtain good clustering performance, the existing trajectory clustering approaches need to input one or more parameters to calibrate the optimal values, which results in a heavy workload and computational complexity. To realize adaptive parameter calibration and reduce the workload of trajectory clustering, an adaptive trajectory clustering approach based on the grid and density (ATCGD) is proposed in this paper. The proposed ATCGD approach includes three parts: partition, mapping, and clustering. In the partition phase, ATCGD applies the average angular difference-based MDL (AD-MDL) partition method to ensure the partition accuracy on the premise that it decreases the number of the segments after the partition. During the mapping procedure, the partitioned segments are mapped into the corresponding cells, and the mapping relationship between the segments and the cells are stored. In the clustering phase, adopting the DBSCAN-based method, the segments in the cells are clustered on the basis of the calibrated values of parameters from the mapping procedure. The extensive experiments indicate that although the results of the adaptive parameter calibration are not optimal, in most cases, the difference between the adaptive calibration and the optimal is less than 5%, while the run time of clustering can reduce about 95%, compared with the TRACLUS algorithm.

Simplification of Node Position Data ;for Interactive Visualization of Dynamic Data Sets

We propose to aid the interactive visualization of time-varying spatial data sets by simplifying node position data over the entire simulation as opposed to over individual states. Our approach is based on two observations. The first observation is that the trajectory of some nodes can be approximated well without recording the position of the node for every state. The second observation is that there are groups of nodes whose motion from one state to the next can be approximated well with a single transformation. We present data set simplification techniques that take advantage of this node data redundancy. Our techniques are general, supporting many types of simulations, they achieve good compression factors, and they allow rigorous control of the maximum node position approximation error. We demonstrate our approach in the context of finite element analysis data, of liquid flow simulation data, and of fusion simulation data.
