High-Index Faceted Cu2 O@CuO Mesocrystals Act as Efficient Catalyst for Si Hydrochlorination to Trichlorosilane

Mesocrystals (MCs) with high-index facets may have superior catalytic properties to those with low-index facets and their nanocrystal counterparts. However, synthesizing such mesocrystal materials is still very challenging because of the metastability of MCs and energetic high-index crystal facets. This work reports a successful solvothermal method followed by calcination for synthesizing copper oxide-based MCs possessing a core-shell structure (denoted as Cu2 O@CuO HIMCs). Furthermore, these MCs are predominantly bounded by the high-index facets such as {311} or {312} with a high-density of stepped atoms. When used as catalysts in Si hydrochlorination to produce trichlorosilane (TCS, the primary feedstock of high-purity crystalline Si), Cu2 O@CuO HIMCs exhibit significantly enhanced Si conversion and TCS selectivity compared to those with flat surfaces and their nanostructured counterparts. Theoretical calculations reveal that both the core-shell structure and the high-index surface contribute to the increased electron density of Cu sites in Cu2 O@CuO HIMCs, promoting the adsorption and dissociation of HCl and stabilizing the dissociated Cl* intermediate. This work provides a simple method for synthesizing high-index faceted MCs and offers a feasible strategy to enhance the catalytic performance of MCs.

Bifunctional Silica-Supported Ionic Liquid Phase (SILP) Catalysts in Silane Production: Their Synthesis, Characterization and Catalytic Activity

A mesoporous silica support was synthesized using the sol-gel method from trichlorosilane. There is a tendency for the specific surface area and the proportion of silica particles mesopores to increase during all stages of sol-gel synthesis. It has been shown that the insertion of hexane and toluene, as additional solvents, into the structure-forming polyethylene glycol, makes it possible to regulate the pore size and specific surface area of silica. Silica functionalization was carried out using SILP technology. The activities of the catalytic systems based on polymer and inorganic supports immobilized by imidazole-based ionic liquids during the trichlorosilane disproportionation reaction were compared. There is a tendency for the monosilane yield for catalytic systems based on an inorganic support to increase. We identified the most promising catalyst in terms of monosilane yield and proposed a bifunctional catalyst that exhibited activity in two parallel reactions: trichlorosilane disproportionation and silicon tetrachloride hydrogenation.

Siemens Reloaded: Chloride-Assisted Selective Hydrodechlorination of SiCl4 to HSiCl3

Trichlorosilane is the key intermediate for the large-scale production of polycrystalline silicon in the Siemens and Union Carbide processes. Both processes, however, are highly inefficient, and over two thirds of the trichlorosilane employed is converted to unwanted silicon tetrachloride accumulating in millions of tons per year on a global scale. In this combined experimental and theoretical study we report an energetically and environmentally benign synthetic protocol for the highly selective conversion of SiCl₄ to HSiCl₃ using organohydridosilanes as recyclable hydrogen transfer reagents in combination with onium chlorides as efficient catalysts. We put the same protocol to further use demonstrating the quantitative conversion of higher oligosilane residues, which form as another unwanted and potentially hazardous byproduct of Siemens processes, to HSiCl₃ in a low-temperature recycling step.

Rational Design of Simple Organocatalysts for the HSiCl3 Enantioselective Reduction of (E)-N-(1-Phenylethylidene)aniline

Prolinamides are well-known organocatalysts for the HSiCl3 reduction of imines; however, custom design of catalysts is based on trial-and-error experiments. In this work, we have used a combination of computational calculations and experimental work, including kinetic analyses, to properly understand this process and to design optimized catalysts for the benchmark (E)-N-(1-phenylethylidene)aniline. The best results have been obtained with the amide derived from 4-methoxyaniline and the N-pivaloyl protected proline, for which the catalyzed process is almost 600 times faster than the uncatalyzed one. Mechanistic studies reveal that the formation of the component supramolecular complex catalyst-HSiCl3-substrate, involving hydrogen bonding breaking and costly conformational changes in the prolinamide, is an important step in the overall process.

Metal-Free Deoxygenation of Chiral Nitroalkanes: An Easy Entry to α-Substituted Enantiomerically Enriched Nitriles

A metal-free, mild and chemodivergent transformation involving nitroalkanes has been developed. Under optimized reaction conditions, in the presence of trichlorosilane and a tertiary amine, aliphatic nitroalkanes were selectively converted into amines or nitriles. Furthermore, when chiral β-substituted nitro compounds were reacted, the stereochemical integrity of the stereocenter was maintained and α-functionalized nitriles were obtained with no loss of enantiomeric excess. The methodology was successfully applied to the synthesis of chiral β-cyano esters, α-aryl alkylnitriles, and TBS-protected cyanohydrins, including direct precursors of four active pharmaceutical ingredients (ibuprofen, tembamide, aegeline and denopamine).

Facile production of ultra-fine silicon nanoparticles

A facile procedure for the synthesis of ultra-fine silicon nanoparticles without the need for a Schlenk vacuum line is presented. The process consists of the production of a (HSiO1.5) n sol-gel precursor based on the polycondensation of low-cost trichlorosilane (HSiCl3), followed by its annealing and etching. The obtained materials were thoroughly characterized after each preparation step by electron microscopy, Fourier transform and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray dispersion spectroscopy, diffraction methods and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The data confirm the formation of ultra-fine silicon nanoparticles with controllable average diameters between 1 and 5 nm depending on the etching time.

HMPA-Catalyzed Transfer Hydrogenation of 3-Carbonyl Pyridines and Other N-Heteroarenes with Trichlorosilane

A method for the HMPA (hexamethylphosphoric triamide)-catalyzed metal-free transfer hydrogenation of pyridines has been developed. The functional group tolerance of the existing reaction conditions provides easy access to various piperidines with ester or ketone groups at the C-3 site. The suitability of this method for the reduction of other N-heteroarenes has also been demonstrated. Thirty-three examples of different substrates have been reduced to designed products with 45⁻96% yields.

Continuous-flow synthesis of primary amines: Metal-free reduction of aliphatic and aromatic nitro derivatives with trichlorosilane

The metal-free reduction of nitro compounds to amines mediated by trichlorosilane was successfully performed for the first time under continuous-flow conditions. Aromatic as well as aliphatic nitro derivatives were converted to the corresponding primary amines in high yields and very short reaction times with no need for purification. The methodology was also extended to the synthesis of two synthetically relevant intermediates (precursors of baclofen and boscalid).

Stereoselective Reduction of Imines with Trichlorosilane Using Solid-Supported Chiral Picolinamides

The stereoselective reduction of imines with trichlorosilane catalyzed by chiral Lewis bases is a well-established procedure for the synthesis of enantio-enriched amines. Five supported cinchona-based picolinamides have been prepared and their activity tested in a model reaction. The comparison of different supporting materials revealed that polystyrene gave better results than silica in terms of stereoselectivity. The applicability of the solid-supported catalyst of choice to the reduction of different imines was also demonstrated. Additionally, for the first time, a catalytic reactor containing a polymer-immobilized chiral picolinamide has been employed for the stereoselective reduction of imines with trichlorosilane under continuous flow conditions.

Multipurpose Polymeric Coating for Functionalizing Inert Polymer Surfaces

In this work, we report on the development of a highly functionalizable polymer coating prepared by the chemical coupling of trichlorosilane (TCS) to the vinyl groups of poly(vinylmethyl siloxane) (PVMS). The resultant PVMS-TCS copolymer can be coated as a functional organic primer layer on a variety of polymeric substrates, ranging from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. Several case studies demonstrating the remarkable and versatile properties of PVMS-TCS coatings are presented. In particular, PVMS-TCS is found to serve as a convenient precursor for the deposition of organosilanes and the subsequent growth of polymer brushes, even on hydrophobic surfaces, such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) and polypropylene. In this study, the physical and chemical characteristics of these versatile PVMS-TCS coatings are interrogated by an arsenal of experimental probes, including scanning electron microscopy, water contact-angle measurements, ellipsometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy.

Toward the development of a versatile functionalized silicone coating

The development of a versatile silicone copolymer coating prepared by the chemical coupling of trichlorosilane (TCS) to the vinyl groups of poly(vinylmethylsiloxane) (PVMS) is reported. The resultant PVMS-TCS copolymer can be deposited as a functional organic layer on a hydrophobic poly(dimethylsiloxane) substrate and its mechanical modulus can be regulated by varying the TCS coupling ratio. In this paper, several case studies demonstrating the versatile properties of these PVMS-TCS functional coatings on PDMS elastomer substrates are presented. Numerous experimental probes, including optical microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, surface contact angle, ellipsometry, and nanoindentation, are utilized to interrogate the physical and chemical characteristics of these PVMS-TCS coatings.

Enantioselective reduction of ketoimines promoted by easily available (S)-proline derivatives

The behavior of readily synthesized and even commercially available (S)-proline derivatives, was studied in the trichlorosilane-mediated reduction of ketoimines. A small library of structurally and electronically modified chiral Lewis bases was considered; such compounds were shown to promote the enantioselective reduction of different substrates in good chemical yields. In the HSiCl₃ addition to the model substrate N-phenylacetophenone imine, the organocatalyst of choice led to the formation of the corresponding amine with good stereoselectivity, up to 75% ee. Theoretical studies were also performed in order to elucidate the origin of the stereoselection.
