Self-Cross-Linking of MXene-Intercalated Graphene Oxide Membranes with Antiswelling Properties for Dye and Salt Rejection

Membrane-based water purification is poised to play an important role in tackling the potable water crisis for safe and clean water access for the general population. Several studies have focused on near two-dimensional membranes for this purpose, which is based on an ion rejection technique. However, membrane swelling in these materials has emerged as a significant challenge because it leads to the loss of function. Herein, we report a self-cross-linked MXene-intercalated graphene oxide (GO) membrane that retains ion and dye rejection properties because the physical cross-linking interaction between Ti-O-Ti and neighboring nanosheets effectively suppresses the swelling of the membrane. In addition to the associative Ti-O-Ti bonds, C-O-C, O=C-O, and C-OH bonds are also formed, which are important for inhibiting the swelling of the membrane. To ensure the longevity of these membranes in a service context, they were subjected to heat pressurization and subsequent thermal annealing. The membrane subjected to this novel processing history exhibits minimal swelling upon immersion in solutions and retains function, rejecting salt and dyes over a wide range of salt and dye concentrations. Furthermore, these membranes successfully rejected dye and salt over a period of 72 h without a degradation of function, suggesting that these membranes have the requisite durability for water filtration applications.

Galvanic-Replacement-Assisted Synthesis of Nanostructured Silver-Surface for SERS Characterization of Two-Dimensional Polymers

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy is a powerful technology in trace analysis. However, the wide applications of SERS in practice are limited by the expensive substrate materials and the complicated preparation processes. Here we report a simple and economical galvanic-replacement-assisted synthesis route to prepare Ag nanoparticles on Cu(0) foil (nanoAg@Cu), which can be directly used as SERS substrate. The fabrication process is fast (ca. 10 min) and easily scaled up to centimeters or even larger. In addition, the morphology of the nanoAg@Cu (with Ag particles size from 30 nm to 160 nm) can be adjusted by various additives (e.g., amino-containing ligands). Finally, we show that the as-prepared nanoAg@Cu can be used for SERS characterization of two-dimensional polymers, and ca. 298 times relative enhancement of Raman intensity is achieved. This work offers a simple and economical strategy for the scalable fabrication of silver-based SERS substrate in thin film analysis.

Dimensional Tuning of Perylene Diimide-Based Polymers for Perovskite Solar Cells with Over 24% Efficiency

The hygroscopic dopants used in Spiro-OMeTAD hole transport material (HTM) in state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells (PSCs) inevitably induce premature degradation of the devices. Here, two multifunctional polymer interface materials based on the perylene diimides (PDI) unit are developed. It is found that quasi-two-dimensional (2D) polymer 2DP-PDI can form a denser film and exhibit better hydrophobicity than linear polymer P-PDI. Importantly, 2DP-PDI can passivate the surface defects and extract hole carriers of perovskite film more effectively, leading to much reduced nonradiative recombination loss. With polymer interface material between the perovskite and HTM layers, the optimized device using 2DP-PDI and P-PDI yields a champion PCE of 24.20% and 23.09%, respectively, along with significantly improved stability, whereas the control device shows a lower efficiency of 22.23%. These results suggest that developing multifunctional polymer interface materials can be a promising strategy to improve the efficiency and stability of PSCs.

Interfacial Synthesis of an Ultrathin Two-Dimensional Polymer Film via [2 + 2] Photocycloaddition

A carbon-carbon-linked, ultrathin, two-dimensional (2D) polymer film was prepared at the air/water interface through photochemically triggered [2 + 2] cycloaddition. The preorganization of the monomers on the water surface and the subsequent photo-polymerization led to the successful preparation of the ultrathin 2D polymer film. The obtained film is continuous, free standing, and has a large area (over 50 μm²). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) give clear evidence of the ultrathin film morphology. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate successful photo-induced [2 + 2] polymerization.

Donor-Acceptor Interactions Induced Interfacial Synthesis of an Ultrathin Fluoric 2D Polymer by Photochemical [2+2] Cycloaddition

Two-dimensional polymers (2DPs) have attracted much interest due to their unique 2D atomic-thick covalent network with periodically linked monomers. The preparation of mono- or few-layered 2DPs with highly ordered structures is still a big challenge. Herein, we report a preparation of ultrathin 2DP film based on photo-triggered [2+2] cycloaddition at the air/water interface. The pre-assembly process induced by the D-A interactions before the polymerization plays a key role in constructing the highly ordered structure. The precise structure and chemical compositions of the continuous 2DP films were proved by selected area electron diffraction (SAED), Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS) and molecular-mechanics-based structural simulation.

Pyrazine-Linked 2D Covalent Organic Frameworks as Coating Material for High-Nickel Layered Oxide Cathodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries

The high specific capacity in excess of 200 mAh g^-1 and low dependence on cobalt have enhanced the research interest on nickel-rich layered metal oxides as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. Nonetheless, their poor cycle life and thermal stability, resulting from the occurrence of cation mixing between the transition-metal (TM) and lithium ions, are yet to be fully addressed to enable the widespread and reliable use of these materials. Here, we report a two-dimensional (2D) pyrazine-linked covalent organic framework (namely, Pyr-2D) as a coating material for nickel-rich layered cathodes to mitigate unwanted TM dissolution and interfacial reactions. The Pyr-2D coating layer, especially the 2D planar morphology and conjugated atomic configuration of Pyr-2D, protects the electrode surface effectively during cycling without sacrificing the electric conductivity of the host material. As a result, Pyr-2D-coated nickel-rich layered cathodes exhibited superior cyclability, rate performance, and thermal stability. The present study highlights the potential ability of 2D conjugated covalent organic frameworks to improve the key electrochemical properties of emerging battery electrodes.

Anatomy of On-Surface Synthesized Boroxine Two-Dimensional Polymers

Synthetic two-dimensional polymers (2DPs) obtained from well-defined monomers via bottom-up fabrication strategies are promising materials that can extend the realm of inorganic 2D materials. The on-surface synthesis of such 2DPs is particularly popular, however the pathway complexity in the growth of such films formed on solid surfaces is poorly understood. In this contribution, we present a straightforward experimental protocol which allows the synthesis of large-area, defect-free 2DPs based on boroxine linkages at room temperature. We focus on unravelling the multiple pathways available to the polymerizing system for the spatial extension of the covalent bonds. Besides the anticipated 2DP, the system can evolve into self-assembled monolayers of partially fused monodisperse reaction products that are difficult to isolate by conventional synthetic methods or remain in the monomeric state. The access to each pathway can be controlled via monomer concentration and the choice of the solvent. Most importantly, the unpolymerized systems do not evolve into the corresponding 2DP upon annealing, indicating the presence of strong kinetic traps. Using high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy, we show reversibility in the polymerization process where the attachment and the detachment of monomers to 2DP crystallites could be monitored as a function of time. Finally, we show that the way the 2DP grows depends on the choice of the solvent. Using UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy, we reveal that the dominant pathway for 2DP growth is via in-plane self-condensation of the monomers, whereas in the case of an aprotic solvent, the favored growth mode is via π stacking of the monomers.

Covalent Organic Frameworks: Chemical Approaches to Designer Structures and Built-In Functions

A new approach has been developed to design organic polymers using topology diagrams. This strategy enables covalent integration of organic units into ordered topologies and creates a new polymer form, that is, covalent organic frameworks. This is a breakthrough in chemistry because it sets a molecular platform for synthesizing polymers with predesignable primary and high-order structures, which has been a central aim for over a century but unattainable with traditional design principles. This new field has its own features that are distinct from conventional polymers. This Review summarizes the fundamentals as well as major progress by focusing on the chemistry used to design structures, including the principles, synthetic strategies, and control methods. We scrutinize built-in functions that are specific to the structures by revealing various interplays and mechanisms involved in the expression of function. We propose major fundamental issues to be addressed in chemistry as well as future directions from physics, materials, and application perspectives.

Surface Confined Synthesis of Hydroxy Functionalized Two-Dimensional Polymer: The Effect of the Position of Hydroxy Groups

We report on the on-surface synthesis of a series of two-dimensional polymers (2DPs) and macrocycles containing hydroxyl groups on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface. The formed 2DPs and macrocycles were visualized through scanning tunneling microscopy. By varying the solvent and reaction temperature, structural evolution from oligomers to well-ordered 2DPs or discrete macrocycles was directly followed. In addition, we discovered that the reaction outcome can be steered from extended 2DPs to discrete macrocycles or catenular structures by exchanging the position of the hydroxyl and aldehyde group. These results indicate that the relative positions of hydroxyl and aldehyde groups on the biphenyl ring play a determining role in the control and selection of the final products of the surface-confined Schiff base coupling reaction.

Supramolecular Assemblies on Surfaces: Nanopatterning, Functionality, and Reactivity

Understanding how molecules interact to form large-scale hierarchical structures on surfaces holds promise for building designer nanoscale constructs with defined chemical and physical properties. Here, we describe early advances in this field and highlight upcoming opportunities and challenges. Both direct intermolecular interactions and those that are mediated by coordinated metal centers or substrates are discussed. These interactions can be additive, but they can also interfere with each other, leading to new assemblies in which electrical potentials vary at distances much larger than those of typical chemical interactions. Earlier spectroscopic and surface measurements have provided partial information on such interfacial effects. In the interim, scanning probe microscopies have assumed defining roles in the field of molecular organization on surfaces, delivering deeper understanding of interactions, structures, and local potentials. Self-assembly is a key strategy to form extended structures on surfaces, advancing nanolithography into the chemical dimension and providing simultaneous control at multiple scales. In parallel, the emergence of graphene and the resulting impetus to explore 2D materials have broadened the field, as surface-confined reactions of molecular building blocks provide access to such materials as 2D polymers and graphene nanoribbons. In this Review, we describe recent advances and point out promising directions that will lead to even greater and more robust capabilities to exploit designer surfaces.

Synthesis of Responsive Two-Dimensional Polymers via Self-Assembled DNA Networks

Despite a growing interest in two-dimensional polymers, their rational synthesis remains a challenge. The solution-phase synthesis of a two-dimensional polymer is reported. A DNA-based monomer self-assembles into a supramolecular network, which is further converted into the covalently linked two-dimensional polymer by anthracene dimerization. The polymers appear as uniform monolayers, as shown by AFM and TEM imaging. Furthermore, they exhibit a pronounced solvent responsivity. The results demonstrate the value of DNA-controlled self-assembly for the formation of two-dimensional polymers in solution.
