Direct observation of nanoscale Pt electrode agglomeration at the triple phase boundary

Nanoporous platinum electrode thin films were delaminated from yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates via double cantilever beam delamination to reveal the structure located at the interface between electrode and electrolyte. The thermally driven morphological evolution between the electrode top surface and the substrate contact interface of agglomerated nanoporous platinum thin films were compared. We found the temperature required for significant agglomeration to occur was approximately 100 °C higher at the electrolyte contact interface side than at the top surface side. Judging the reaction active site from the electrode top surface could be inaccurate because higher resistance of thermal agglomeration at the interface could retain the reaction active site during fuel cell operation.

Direct Observation of Oxygen Vacancy Distribution across Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Grain Boundaries

Crystalline interfaces in materials often govern the macroscopic functional properties owing to their complex structure and chemical inhomogeneity. For ionic crystals, however, such understanding has been precluded by the debatable local anion distribution across crystal interfaces. In this study, using yttria-stabilized zirconia as a model material, the oxygen vacancy distribution across individual grain boundaries was directly quantified by atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy with ultrahigh-sensitive energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Combined with dynamical scattering calculations, we unambiguously show that the relative oxygen concentrations increase in four high-angle grain boundaries, indicating that the oxygen vacancies are actually depleted near the grain boundary cores. These results experimentally evidence that the long-range electric interaction is the dominant factor to determine the local point defect distribution at ionic crystal interfaces.

Atomic Scale Origin of Enhanced Ionic Conductivity at Crystal Defects

In oxide materials, the presence of dislocations often strongly affects the properties of thin film and multilayer devices. Although it was reported that ionic conduction can be enhanced by introducing dislocations in ionic conductors, the underlying mechanism of such enhancement remains unclear. Here we analyzed the ionic conduction enhancement in an yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) single edge dislocation from a structural point of view, using atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). First, the atomic structure and chemistry of a dislocation in YSZ were characterized by STEM and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). A relative ionic conduction variation map around the dislocation was then estimated based on the well-established strain-conductivity and chemistry-conductivity relationships in YSZ. We propose that a faster ionic conductivity path can be formed around the dislocation core due to the coupling of the tensile strain field and dopant segregation, which could account for enhanced ionic conductivity along dislocations.

Integrated Smart Gas Tracking Device with Artificially Tailored Selectivity for Real-Time Monitoring Food Freshness

The real-time monitoring of food freshness in refrigerators is of significant importance in detecting potential food spoiling and preventing serious health issues. One method that is commonly reported and has received substantial attention is the discrimination of food freshness via the tracking of volatile molecules. Nevertheless, the ambient environment of low temperature (normally below 4 °C) and high humidity (90% R.H.), as well as poor selectivity in sensing gas species remain the challenge. In this research, an integrated smart gas-tracking device is designed and fabricated. By applying pump voltage on the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) membrane, the oxygen concentration in the testing chamber can be manually tailored. Due to the working principle of the sensor following the mixed potential behavior, distinct differences in sensitivity and selectivity are observed for the sensor that operated at different oxygen concentrations. Typically, the sensor gives satisfactory selectivity to H2S, NH3, and C2H5OH at the oxygen concentrations of 10%, 30%, and 40%, respectively. In addition, an acceptable response/recovery rate (within 24 s) is also confirmed. Finally, a refrigerator prototype that includes the smart gas sensor is built, and satisfactory performance in discriminating food freshness status of fresh or semi-fresh is verified for the proposed refrigerator prototype. In conclusion, these aforementioned promising results suggest that the proposed integrated smart gas sensor could be a potential candidate for alarming food spoilage.

Evaluation of Extra-High Translucent Dental Zirconia: Translucency, Crystalline Phase, Mechanical Properties, and Microstructures

Highly translucent zirconia (TZ) is frequently used in dentistry. The properties of several highly translucent zirconia materials available in the market require an in-depth understanding. In this study, we assessed the translucency, crystalline phase, mechanical properties, and microstructures of three newly developed highly translucent zirconia materials (Zpex 4. m, 4 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia: 4YSZ; Zpex Smile.m, 5YSZ; ZR Lucent ULTRA, 6YSZ). The translucency parameter (TP) was analyzed using the CIELAB system. X-ray diffraction was conducted for the crystalline phase analysis, followed by Rietveld refinement. A biaxial flexural strength test using the Weibull analysis was performed to evaluate the mechanical properties. Scanning electron microscopy, grain size distribution, and average grain size were used to analyze the microstructures. The TP content of the ZR Lucent ULTRA was the highest among the samples investigated. The Rietveld analysis revealed that the cubic zirconia phase content of the ZR Lucent ULTRA was the highest. The biaxial flexural strength of the ZR Lucent ULTRA was the lowest (622.9 MPa). The average grain size and proportion of large grains (1.0 µm < x) were the highest in ZR Lucent ULTRA. Therefore, extra-high translucent zirconia has the potential for use in anterior monolithic restorations owing to its esthetics and strength.

Solid-State Gas Sensors with Ni-Based Sensing Materials for Highly Selective Detecting NOx

Precise monitoring of NOx concentrations in nitric oxide delivery systems is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of patients undergoing inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) therapy for pulmonary arterial hypertension. Currently, NOx sensing in commercialized iNO instruments predominantly relies on chemiluminescence sensors, which not only drives up costs but also limits their portability. Herein, we developed solid-state gas sensors utilizing Ni-based sensing materials for effectively tracking the levels of NO and NO2 in the NO delivery system. These sensors comprised of NiO-SE or (NiFe2O4 + 30 wt.% Fe2O3)-SE vs. Mn-based RE demonstrated high selectivity toward 100 ppm NO under the interference of 10 ppm NO2 or 3 ppm NO2 under the interference of 100 ppm NO, respectively. Meanwhile, excellent stability, repeatability, and humidity resistance were also verified for the proposed sensors. Sensing mechanisms were thoroughly investigated through assessments of adsorption capabilities and electrochemical reactivity. It turns out that the superior electrochemical reactivity of NiO toward NO, alongside the NO2 favorable adsorption characteristics of (NiFe2O4 + 30 wt.% Fe2O3), is the primary reason for the high selectivity to NOx. These findings indicate a bright future for the application of these NOx sensors in innovative iNO treatment technologies.

Nanocrystalline Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Ceramics for Cranial Window Applications

Transparent yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) ceramics are promising for cranial window applications because of their good mechanical and optical properties as well as biocompatibility. YSZ discs with different yttria concentrations were either processed via current-activated pressure-assisted densification (CAPAD) using commercial nanoparticles or densified via spark plasma sintering (SPS) using pyrolysis-synthesized nanoparticles in-house. This study provided critical results to screen composition, processing, microstructure, and cytocompatibility of transparent YSZ discs for cranial window applications. CAPAD-processed YSZ discs with 6 or 8 mol % yttria (6YSZ and 8YSZ) and SPS-densified YSZ discs with 4 mol % yttria (4YSZ_P) showed 200-350 nm polycrystalline grains containing 20-30 nm crystallite domains. SPS-densified YSZ discs with 8 mol % yttria (8YSZ_P) showed larger polycrystalline grains of 819 ± 155 nm with 29 ± 5 nm crystallite domains. CAPAD-processed YSZ discs with 3 mol % yttria (3YSZ) showed 39 ± 9 nm grains. Bone-marrow-derived stem cells (BMSCs) on the polished YSZ discs showed statistically higher spreading areas than those on the unpolished YSZ discs of the same compositions. Generally, polished 8YSZ, 4YSZ_P, and 8YSZ_P discs and unpolished 8YSZ_R, 4YSZ_PR, and 8YSZ_PR discs had lower average cell adhesion densities than other YSZ discs under direct contact conditions. Under indirect contact conditions, all the YSZ disc groups showed similar average cell adhesion densities to the Cell-only control. The groups of polished 4YSZ_P and 8YSZ_P discs, unpolished 4YSZ_PR and 8YSZ_PR discs, and particle control of 8YSZ_Pnp showed higher Y³⁺ ion concentrations than other groups. No mineral deposition was detected on the polished YSZ discs after cell culture. Considering multiple factors such as cytocompatibility, cell adhesion density, Y³⁺ ion release, mineral deposition, and optical transparency collectively, 8YSZ may be the best candidate for the cranial window applications. Further studies are needed to evaluate the long-term transparency and biocompatibility of YSZ discs.
