Abstract
The development of interventions to prevent congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) has been limited by the lack of an established nonhuman primate model. Here we show that infection of female rhesus monkeys early in pregnancy with Zika virus (ZIKV) recapitulates many features of CZS in humans. We infected 9 pregnant monkeys with ZIKV, 6 early in pregnancy (weeks 6-7 of gestation) and 3 later in pregnancy (weeks 12-14 of gestation), and compared findings with uninfected controls. 100% (6 of 6) of monkeys infected early in pregnancy exhibited prolonged maternal viremia and fetal neuropathology, including fetal loss, smaller brain size, and histopathologic brain lesions, including microcalcifications, hemorrhage, necrosis, vasculitis, gliosis, and apoptosis of neuroprogenitor cells. High-resolution MRI demonstrated concordant lesions indicative of deep gray matter injury. We also observed spinal, ocular, and neuromuscular pathology. Our data show that vascular compromise and neuroprogenitor cell dysfunction are hallmarks of CZS pathogenesis, suggesting novel strategies to prevent and to treat this disease.

Abstract
The calcinogenic plants are among the most noxious plants to animals in the world. The pathological and biochemical effects of calcinogenic plants in cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, buffalo and laboratory animals have been determined. The chemical nature of the toxic agents and the precise mechanism by with the calcinogenic plants induces calcinosis have been defined. Most of the active principle present as steroidal glycoside is hydrolyzed in intestine, rumen and other tissues or by the bacterial flora releasing the steroidal fragment, in most cases 1,25(OH)(2)D(3). The excess of vitamin D stimulates CaBP synthesis and calcium and phosphate absorption, producing hypercalcemia and/or hyperphosphatemia. The excessively absorbed mineral cannot be physiologically accommodated, and the deposition in soft tissues results in calcinosis. The different means of treatment of calcinosis and control of calcinogenic plants are discussed with regards to their effectiveness. A number of potential uses of calcinogenic plants have been suggested but none has been exploited on a large scale. The understanding of the mechanisms involved with calcinosis contributed enormously to the compression of vitamin D mechanism. Research methods were developed and improved but a lot is to be done in this fascinating subject.

Abstract
This article is based on a review of the literature and the study of pathology sections obtained from various veterinary pathology laboratories. Epulis is a non-specific, clinical designation for a localized, exophytic growth on the gingiva. Four reactive epulides occur in human beings, namely focal fibrous hyperplasia (fibrous epulis), pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell granuloma (giant cell epulis), and peripheral ossifying fibroma (calcifying fibrous epulis). The first three also occur in dogs but only focal fibrous hyperplasia appears to be common. The peripheral ossifying fibroma has not yet been reported in dogs. Odontogenic tumors occurring on the gingiva (i.e., as epulides) are referred to as peripheral odontogenic tumors. Three types have been reported in dogs. One, the common fibromatous epulis, is equivalent to the rare peripheral odontogenic fibroma in human beings. Another, the acanthomatous epulis, appears to be a form of ameloblastoma but differs from the peripheral ameloblastoma in human beings in that it invades bone; its biological behavior is therefore that of the human intraosseous ameloblastoma. The third, a rare lesion, has been referred to in the veterinary literature as a calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor, although it is not the canine counterpart of the human CEOT. The term, amyloid-producing odontogenic tumor, has been suggested as being appropriate for this lesion.

Abstract
The histological characteristics of a series of 154 oral tumours with the clinical appearance of epulides in 129 dogs were reviewed. Diagnoses were based on current criteria in human oral pathology and compared with the original diagnoses. The histological findings suggested that the majority of epulides in the dog can be classified as focal fibrous hyperplasia (43.5 per cent), peripheral ameloblastoma (17.5 per cent), peripheral odontogenic fibroma (WHO type) (16.9 per cent) and pyogenic granuloma (1.95 per cent). In addition, a number of other odontogenic tumours (1.95 per cent) and non-odontogenic tumours (18.2 per cent) such as fibrosarcoma and squamous cell carcinoma, which are not traditionally associated with the clinical appearance of an epulis, were diagnosed. Of 74 lesions that were previously diagnosed as fibromatous and ossifying epulides, 50 (68 per cent) were reclassified as focal fibrous hyperplasia and 21 (28 per cent) as peripheral odontogenic fibroma (WHO type). The majority of lesions (76 per cent), which were originally classified as acanthomatous epulis, were found to be peripheral ameloblastoma. In addition, three squamous cell carcinomas, two rare odontogenic tumours and two cases of focal fibrous hyperplasia were diagnosed in this classification. It was concluded that, as in man, the term epulis is a clinically descriptive term and that the renal nature of these lesions should be determined histologically.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the normal ultrasonographic anatomy of the canine shoulder. Fourteen shoulders from 7 clinically normal mid-sized dogs were radiographed and imaged using high frequency ultrasound. Each shoulder was isolated postmortem, and the ultrasonographic and gross anatomy was studied during dissection. The ultrasonographic appearance of the shoulder specimens was similar to that found in the live dogs. Twenty-four shoulders isolated postmortem from 12 variably sized dogs were also used to characterize the normal ultrasound anatomy over a range of sizes. Important anatomic structures that could be consistently evaluated were the biceps tendon and bursa, the bicipital groove surface, the supraspinatous tendon, the infraspinatous tendon, the teres minor tendon, and the caudal aspect of the humeral head. Results of ultrasonographic examination of 4 dogs with shoulder lameness are described to illustrate some applications of canine shoulder ultrasonography in the evaluation of the canine shoulder. In these dogs, ultrasound was a valuable tool to evaluate effusion and synovial proliferation within the bicipital bursa, supraspinatous and biceps tendinitis, biceps tendon strain, and dystrophic calcification.

Abstract
A six-month-old Labrador retriever was presented for investigation of acute polyuria, polydipsia and haematemesis six hours following ingestion of a tube of the topical antipsoriatic vitamin D analogue, calcipotriol. Transient hypercalcaemia, azotaemia, proteinuria, thrombocytopenia and ventricular arrhythmias ensued. Abdominal ultrasonography and echocardiography revealed evidence of diffuse soft tissue mineralisation. Despite 13 days of intensive supportive care, the dog was euthanased due to continued haematemesis and anorexia. Necropsy confirmed mineralisation and necrosis of multiple organ systems consistent with vitamin D toxicity.

Abstract
A pathological study on 5 of 21 cats affected naturally with systemic calcinosis was performed. The animals ranged in age from 1 to 9 years. Hematology and serum chemistry analyses showed the elevated values of phosphorus, blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine. X-ray examination disclosed the increased density of systemic bones. Histologically, marked calcification was present at the vascular walls of almost all the organs including the lungs, trachea, kidneys, heart, aorta, alimentary tracts, choroid plexus and bones. In the lungs, kidneys and stomach, the calcified lesions were associated with deposition of oxalate crystals. Serum chemistry showed more elevated values of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (vitamin D) of the affected cats than the normal level. Retrospective examination revealed that these cats had been fed the commercial pet foods containing a large amount of vitamin D (6,370 IU/100 g diet) from their young age, and its value was about ten times as much as that of the control food (680 IU/100 g diet). Pathological changes found in the cats from the experimental vitamin D3 toxicosis were similar to those in the natural cases. In addition, tissue levels of calcium, phosphorous and zinc in the lungs and kidneys were markedly elevated in both natural and vitamin D-intoxicated cases. These findings suggest that long-term feeding of the pet food containing excessive vitamin D was responsible for the outbreak of the systemic calcinosis in the cats.

Abstract
Calcinosis circumscripta is an uncommon syndrome of ectopic idiopathic, dystrophic, metastatic or iatrogenic mineralization characterized by deposition of calcium salts in soft tissues. This paper is a retrospective study of 77 canine cases. The age of dogs in the study varied from 4 months to 15 years and 55% were <1 year old, 74% <2 years old and 88% <4 years old. Several pure and mixed, typically large breed dogs were affected so that 28.6, 13 and 9% were German Shepherd, Rottweiler and Labrador Retriever respectively. The size of lesions varied from 2 mm to 13 cm in diameter but most lesions were between 0.5 cm and 3 cm in diameter. Lesions were solitary in 82% of the affected dogs, and occurred most commonly on the hind feet (50%) and tongue (23%). With multiple lesions there was no apparent body symmetry. Microscopically, most lesions were well-defined single or multiple variably sized aggregates of amorphous to granular, lightly to darkly basophilic material with or without peripheral granulomatous reaction and surrounded by varying amounts of fibrous connective tissue. Additionally, three small nodular masses in the wall of the jejunum of a dog were diagnosed as calcinosis circumscripta. This is the first reported case of idiopathic intestinal calcinosis circumscripta in the dog.

Abstract
The occurrence of intervertebral disc calcification was investigated by conventional spinal radiography in eight families of wirehaired dachshunds, with each family comprising one sire, two dams and one litter from each dam. Each offspring was examined radiographically once at 24-35 months of age. The occurrence of disc calcification was rated according to four different scales. A strong correlation was found in the occurrence of disc calcification between offspring and mean parent (P < 0.001) and between offspring and dams (P < 0.005) on an either/or scale. Statistically significant estimates of heritability of 0.60 and 0.87 were found based on the offspring-sire relationship using the total score and three-class scale, respectively. Higher correlation estimates were found based on the dam-offspring relationship than based on the sire-offspring relationship, suggesting an effect of maternal environmental factors.

Abstract
Plain spinal radiography was performed in 40 dachshunds at regular intervals from 6 or 12 months of age to 2 years of age. A follow-up study at 3 to 4 years of age included 12 dogs. High incidence rates of intervertebral disk calcification were seen at 6 to 18 months of age. The number of dogs affected and number of calcified disks seemed to reach a steady level or a maximum at about 24 to 27 months of age. Dissolution of previously calcified disks without clinical signs was demonstrated, causing decreasing numbers of visibly calcified disks after 2 years of age. Radiographic examination for calcified intervertebral disks in the dachshund is recommended at 24 to 30 months of age for heritability studies and selective breeding.

Abstract
The pathogenesis of vitamin A-induced premature growth-plate closure was investigated in calves. A progressive increase in the severity of growth-plate lesions with time and a progressive increase in the extent of growth-plate involvement was observed. There was initial loss of metachromasia from the growth plate in a region that formed a narrow horizontal band of cartilage composed of the epiphyseal growth zone and a strip of reserve-zone cartilage. Immunostaining revealed there was loss of aggrecan, decorin, and biglycan from this region; however, it was doubtful that the regional loss of proteoglycan was a major contributing factor in the pathogenesis of premature growth-plate closure. This is because this region was the vestige of cartilage that remained when growth-plate closure was almost complete. The major alteration was premature mineralization of columnar cartilage and subsequent endochondral ossification. This caused the depth of the columnar zone to be reduced. Columnar-zone cartilage cells appeared immature where the matrix became mineralized and lacked the morphology of hypertrophic chondrocytes. The depth of the reserve-cartilage zone also was reduced as matrix mineralization of the columnar zone progressed, and further reduction in columnar cartilage depth occurred. Eventually, there was matrix mineralization within the adjacent reserve cartilage. The distribution of reaction product after immunostaining with antibodies to the following proteins was described during normal endochondral ossification: aggrecan, decorin, biglycan, versican, type I collagen propeptide, type I collagen, type II collagen, osteopontin, osteocalcin, osteonectin, bone sialoprotein, and alkaline phosphatase. Biglycan, type I collagen propeptide, type I collagen, osteopontin, osteocalcin, osteonectin, bone sialoprotein, and alkaline phosphatase were localized within the cytoplasm or surrounding matrix of hypertrophic chondrocytes. In vitamin-treated calves, these same proteins were found in regions undergoing premature matrix mineralization even though the chondrocytes did not have a hypertrophic morphology. Therefore, vitamin treatment did not cause just a selective expression, but it caused expression of a large number of matrix proteins normally associated with the hypertrophic chondrocyte phenotype. Finally, completely mineralized columnar and reserve cartilage were removed by a modeling/remodeling process similar to that seen in the metaphysis.

Abstract
A 22-week-old 21-kg female Bernese Mountain Dog ingested a topical antipsoriatic preparation containing the synthetic vitamin D analog tacalcitol. The dog died after a history of lethargy, recumbency, paresis of the hindlimbs, increased rectal temperature, dyspnea, and hematemesis. Histologic examination revealed metastatic calcification in the kidneys, lungs, myocardium, brain, stomach, and tear glands. The appearance of soft tissue mineralization in multiple organs is consistent with hypercalcemia derived from excessive vitamin D uptake. Oral toxicity studies for tacalcitol in the dog are not available, but the present report emphasizes the extraordinary toxic risk of drugs containing this vitamin D analog to dogs.

Abstract
This article discusses the diagnosis and medical treatment of stromal keratomalacia or "melting ulcers," stromal abscesses, eosinophilic keratitis (EK), and calcific band keratopathy. These are common and important inflammatory keratopathies of the equine corneal stroma. Keratomalacia and stromal abscesses are associated with infection, leukocytic invasion of the stroma, and loss of tissue and tear film proteinase homeostasis. Eosinophils infiltrate the stroma in response to unknown stimuli in EK. Calcium is deposited in the stroma and epithelium secondary to chronic equine recurrent uveitis in calcific band keratopathy. They are all associated with varying degrees of iridocyclitis.

Abstract
Severe degenerative myocardial disease occurred in female C3H/OUJ mice fed purified diets for 36 weeks; the diet contained 5% or 20% fat as non-hydrogenated soybean oil. Deaths of lactating females of this group (17/35 high fat diet and 7/35 low fat diet animals) were due to sudden cardiovascular collapse. Cardiomegaly with marked atrial and ventricular myocardial mineralization was seen at necropsy. Histologically, the random, myopathic foci were characterized by severe myocardial degeneration, mineralization, and fibrosis. Mural thrombosis, pulmonary arteriosclerosis, and mild myocardial inflammatory cell infiltrates were also present. Pathological changes were similar to those of dystrophic cardiac calcinosis, an incidental necropsy finding in certain mouse strains.

Abstract
A 10-year-old ovariohysterectomised domestic shorthaired cat was presented with multiple nodular calcifications of the footpads and interdigital spaces. Renal insufficiency was diagnosed by routine biochemistry and urinalysis. Additionally, the cat had a calcium and phosphorus solubility product greater than 70 mg/dl and elevated circulating parathyroid hormone. Dietary management of the renal disease resulted in a reduction in the mineral solubility product and normalisation of the concentration of parathyroid hormone accompanied by concurrent resolution of the pedal lesions.

Abstract
Aortic and cardiac mineralization was found in 21 of 3443 (0.61%) canine thoracic radiographs. In none of 786 feline thoracic radiographs reviewed were such lesions present. Mineralizations were superimposed on the ascending aorta (19 dogs) or on the caudal cardiac silhouette (2 dogs). In 2 of 4 dogs mineralization was identified echocardiographically dorsal to the aortic valve in close proximity to coronary arteries. Computed tomography confirmed mineralization of the aortic arch and root in 2 of 2 dogs. Necropsy and histopathologic examination in 1 dog revealed multiple nodular aortic tunica media calcifications with adjacent areas of degeneration. Lesions were significantly overrepresented in older dogs and in Rottweilers, and regarded as dystrophic calcification, caused either by age-related degenerative changes or chronic disease-related processes. There was no evidence of clinical significance attributed to the mineralization in any dog. Aortic and cardiac mineralization should be recognized as an incidental, non-significant finding in dogs of advanced age and differentiated from pleural and pulmonary structures.

Abstract
Mineralization of the supraspinatus tendon was diagnosed in 24 large-breed dogs as a probable cause for a chronic unilateral forelimb lameness. Owners of 12 dogs responded to a questionnaire survey evaluating the treatment that their dog had received which consisted of either surgical removal of the mineralization after failure of conservative treatment (operated group; n=9) or rest and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (nonoperated group; n=3). In eight out of the 12 dogs, the mineralization was also present in the asymptomatic forelimb. Based on owner evaluation, the degree of lameness had decreased distinctly in both groups. Six dogs (four operated and two nonoperated) were reevaluated at Michigan State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (MSU-VTH) and were without lameness except for one dog in the operated group. The mineralizations had reformed in all dogs in the operated group after a mean follow-up time of 5.1 years.

Abstract
The spines of 35 rabbits (32 New Zealand white and 3 AC/J), ranging in age from 3 months to 8 1/2 years, were investigated systematically for spontaneous degenerative changes. Three types of lesion were observed. (1) The nucleus pulposus underwent chondroid metaplasia throughout the length of the vertebral column by the age of 2 years. (2) Hydroxyapatite deposition was found in the nucleus pulposus in 12 of 20 animals examined roentgenographically. The lesion occurred principally in the distal thoracic segments and was first observed in 3-month-old rabbits. (3) Spondylosis occurred in each of four macerated spines from animals greater than 24 months old. Portions of the spine spared by disc calcification were affected.

Abstract
Arthroscopy was used to identify and remove loose osteochondral fragments detected in the region of the medial coronoid processes in the elbow joints of a cat that was lame in both forelimbs. The cat had clinical signs and arthroscopic lesions similar to those seen in dogs with fragmented medial coronoid processes. Moderate osteoarthritis was observed radiographically. Lameness resolved 2 weeks after removal of the fragments and was not detected for 2 years after surgery. No obvious progression of the osteoarthritis in the elbow joints was detected radiographically 2 years after surgery.

Abstract
Fourteen aged Sprague-Dawley rats had typical renal secondary hyperparathyroidism. The renal disease was severe glomerulosclerosis with tubular dilation. The parathyroid glands were enlarged and had hyperplasia of chief cells. Bone lesions were generalized osteodystrophia fibrosa and osteosclerosis. All rats had osteodystrophia fibrosa and it was severe in 10 rats. Only four rats had osteosclerosis and it was moderate. Metastatic calcification was seen in various soft tissues in 13 rats.
