Abstract
We report 38 cases of inflammatory fibrosarcoma occurring in 23 females and 15 males, 2 months to 74 years of age (median, 8.5 years; mean, 15 years) with symptoms of abdominal pain (17 cases), anemia (21 cases), fever (14 cases), mass (16 cases), and gastrointestinal obstruction (7 cases). Primary tumor sites included mesentery and retroperitoneum (31 cases), omentum (two cases), mediastinum (two cases), liver (one case), diaphragm (one case), and abdominal wall (one case). Sizes ranged from 2.4 cm to 20 cm (mean, 9.6 cm). Follow-up data in 27 cases revealed local recurrences in 10 patients, with multiple local recurrences in three and histologically proven distant metastases to lung (two cases) and brain (one case). Five patients died from their disease (median, 20 months). All tumors, including metastases, consisted of fibroblasts, myofibroblasts, and plasma cells, with variable degrees of fibrosis and calcification. Immunostains indicate myofibroblastic differentiation; 18 of 20 (90%) stained for actin, 15 of 18 (83%) for vimentin, and 10 of 13 (77%) for keratin (primarily in a submesothelial location). Ultrastructural studies also disclosed myofibroblastic features. The locally aggressive, recurrent nature of these neoplasms, as well as the occurrence of metastases and tumor deaths, indicate that they are potentially malignant neoplasms that we believe are better classified as inflammatory fibrosarcomas, not as cellular inflammatory pseudotumors.

Abstract
Congenital fibrosarcoma (CFS) is a pediatric spindle cell tumor of the soft tissues that usually presents before the age of 2 years. Although these tumors display histologic features of malignancy and frequently recur, they have a relatively good prognosis and only rarely metastasize. CFS must therefore be differentiated from more aggressive spindle cell sarcomas that occur during childhood, particularly adult-type fibrosarcoma (ATFS), which can have an identical morphology. CFS must also be distinguished from benign but cellular fibroblastic lesions of the same age group, including infantile fibromatosis (IFB) and myofibromatosis (MFB). Unfortunately, standard pathologic examination often does not differentiate CFS from these other conditions. The authors recently identified a novel chromosomal translocation in CFS, t(12;15)(p13;q25), which gives rise to an ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion. They subsequently developed reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays that can detect ETV6-NTRK3 fusion transcripts in CFS frozen or paraffin-embedded tumor specimens. To confirm the use of this assay in the differential diagnosis of CFS, they have screened a larger series of childhood pediatric spindle cell lesions for ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusions, including 11 cases of CFS, 13 malignant spindle cell tumors (including ATFS), and 38 benign spindle cell tumors (including IFB and MFB). Of the 11 cases diagnosed as CFS, 10 showed the ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion, whereas none of the 51 other malignant or benign spindle cell tumors demonstrated this fusion gene. They also compared their RT-PCR findings with those of conventional cytogenetics and with immunohistochemical detection of the ETV6-NTRK3 protein using antisera to NTRK3. They conclude that RT-PCR analysis is superior to these techniques for the detection of the ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion in pediatric spindle cell tumors, and it is a reliable and specific modality for the diagnosis of CFS.

Abstract
Primary cardiac malignancies are rare tumors that are difficult to diagnose clinically. Different primary cardiac malignancies may have different clinical, morphologic, and radiologic features and intracardiac locations. Angiosarcoma is the most common primary cardiac malignancy. It tends to occur in the right atrium and involve the pericardium. Because of its tendency to hemorrhage, angiosarcoma often demonstrates areas of increased signal intensity with T1-weighted sequences. Undifferentiated sarcomas typically occur in the left atrium and have variable epidemiologic and radiologic features. Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common primary cardiac malignancy in children and is more likely than other primary cardiac sarcomas to involve the valves. Primary cardiac osteogenic sarcoma almost always occurs in the left atrium and frequently demonstrates calcification. Certain features (eg, broad base of attachment, origin at a site other than the atrial septum) help differentiate this tumor from left atrial myxoma. Leiomyosarcoma favors the left atrium and tends to invade the pulmonary veins and mitral valve. Fibrosarcoma also tends to occur in the left atrium and is often necrotic. Liposarcoma is very rare and usually manifests as a large, infiltrating mass. Foci of macroscopic fat are occasionally seen. Primary cardiac lymphoma occurs more commonly in immunocompromised patients, frequently involves the pericardium, and, unlike other primary cardiac malignancies, may respond to chemotherapy. The advent of cross-sectional imaging has allowed earlier detection of primary cardiac malignancies as well as more accurate diagnosis and characterization.

Abstract
Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcomas (LGFMS) bear either the t(7,16) (q32-34;p11) or t(11,16) (p11;p11) translocations, resulting in FUS-CREB3L2 or FUS-CREB3L1 fusions, respectively. Heretofore, fusion transcripts were mainly detected in frozen tissues, using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. In this study, we aimed to develop a reliable method to detect these in paraffin-embedded tissues, and to examine the clinicopathologic characteristics of a series of translocation-positive LGFMS. Sixty-three neoplasms with typical morphologic features of LGFMS and 66 non-LGFMS tumors selected for their resemblance to LGFMS (LGFMS-like tumors) were examined. RNA of sufficient quality could be extracted from 111/129 (86%) cases (59 LGFMS, 52 non-LGFMS). Of all, 48/59 (sensitivity, 81%) LGFMS contained detectable transcripts (45 FUS-CREB3L2, 3 FUS-CREB3L1). Most relevant clinicopathologic features of fusion-positive LGFMS included predominance in lower extremities (22/48; thigh: 13/48), deep situation (46/48), and occasional presence of unusual histologic features, for example, hypercellular areas (16/48), foci of epithelioid cells (13/48), and giant rosettes (6/48). Most tumors expressed EMA (41/45), at least focally, CD99 (38/41) and bcl-2 (36/41) while being essentially negative for CD34 (2/45), mdm2 (1/41), smooth muscle actin (1/45), S100 protein (0/46), desmin (0/44), h-caldesmon (0/42), keratins (0/44), and CD117 (0/40). Eleven presumed LGFMS were fusion negative. Of all, 7/52 non-LGMFS neoplasms contained FUS-CREB3L2 transcripts, of which 4 had been diagnosed as sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma. In conclusion, FUS-CREB3L1/L2 fusion transcripts can be detected in paraffin-embedded LGFMS in a sensitive manner, using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Most fusion-positive LGFMS are EMA-positive and CD34/S100/smooth muscle actin negative. The presence of epithelioid cells and fusion transcripts in both LGFMS and a subset of sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma suggest that these neoplasms might be related.

Abstract
This retrospective study summarizes the clinicopathologic findings in 110 children with fibrosarcoma. Seventy cases were selected from previous reports and 40 were from our files. The histologic criteria used for diagnosis are the same as those used for adults. Sixty-eight patients were in the first quinquennium of life, 13 in the second, and 29 in the third. Eleven patients died of their tumor, three in the first quinquennium and eight in ght third. Our findings indicate that children who are less than 5 years old have a 7.3% chance of developing metastatic spread even though the local recurrence rate is 43%. Children who are 10 years old or older had a metastatic rate of 50% at 5-year follow-up, a figure closely approximating that for adults. We believe that infants and children less than 5 years old may be treated initially by local excision of the lesion, without sacrificing significant function of the part. Recurrent tumor does not seem to predispose to metastatic disease.

Abstract
Blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) contrast-based functional MRI (fMRI) has been reported as a method to assess the evolution of tumor oxygenation after hyperoxic treatments, because of its sensitivity to changes in blood flow and deoxyhemoglobin content. However a number of questions remain: 1) In view of tumor heterogeneity, how good is the correlation between the MR parameters in gradient-echo imaging (signal intensity (SI) or effective transverse relaxation time (T(*)(2))) and local tumor oxygen partial pressure (pO(2))? 2) Is the magnitude of the change in SI or T(*)(2) a quantitative marker for variation in pO(2)? 3) Is initial T(*)(2) a good marker for initial pO(2)? To address these questions, murine tumors were imaged during respiratory challenges at 4.7 Tesla, using fiber-optic microprobes to simultaneously acquire tumor pO(2) and erythrocyte flux. The BOLD signal response (SI and T(*)(2)) was temporally correlated with changes in pO(2). However, the magnitude of the signal bore no absolute relation to pO(2) across tumors, i.e., a given change in SI corresponded to a 25 mmHg pO(2) change in one tumor, but to a 100 mmHg change in another. The initial T(*)(2) value did not reliably predict tumor oxygenation at the beginning of the experiment. In conclusion, the major advantages of the technique include noninvasiveness, high spatial resolution, and real-time detection of pO(2) fluctuations. Information afforded by the BOLD imaging technique is qualitative in nature and may be combined with other techniques capable of providing an absolute measure of pO(2).

Abstract
Cells exposed to short and intense electric pulses become permeable to a number of various ionic molecules. This phenomenon was termed electroporation or electropermeabilization and is widely used for in vitro drug delivery into the cells and gene transfection. Tissues can also be permeabilized. These new approaches based on electroporation are used for cancer treatment, i.e., electrochemotherapy, and in vivo gene transfection. In vivo electroporation is thus gaining even wider interest. However, electrode geometry and distribution were not yet adequately addressed. Most of the electrodes used so far were determined empirically. In our study we 1) designed two electrode sets that produce notably different distribution of electric field in tumor, 2) qualitatively evaluated current density distribution for both electrode sets by means of magnetic resonance current density imaging, 3) used three-dimensional finite element model to calculate values of electric field for both electrode sets, and 4) demonstrated the difference in electrochemotherapy effectiveness in mouse tumor model between the two electrode sets. The results of our study clearly demonstrate that numerical model is reliable and can be very useful in the additional search for electrodes that would make electrochemotherapy and in vivo electroporation in general more efficient. Our study also shows that better coverage of tumors with sufficiently high electric field is necessary for improved effectiveness of electrochemotherapy.

Abstract
This retrospective study was performed to assess the potential of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging for demonstrating various types of lipomatous tumors and tumors with fatty component and to compare the results of MR with those of computed tomography (CT). MR examinations of 17 patients with 18 lipomatous tumors (16, benign; two, liposarcoma) and two patients with fibrosarcomas were reviewed; CT scans were available for comparison in all patients. In the 16 benign lesions (12 benign lipomas, two ovarian dermoid cysts, and two renal angiomyolipomas), the fatty component of the tumors was readily demonstrated by both MR and CT. The T1 and T2 relaxation times and spin density of benign lipomatous tumors were in a range similar to those of normal subcutaneous fat. Differentiation between lipomas and liposarcomas was achieved with both MR and CT. On MR images using a short repetition time (TR = .5 sec), liposarcomas (long T1) were imaged with a lower MR intensity than lipomas (short T1).

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to elucidate the pathological features of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT) with gene rearrangement other than ALK. METHODS AND RESULTS We investigated anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK), ROS1, ETV6, NTRK3 and RET in 36 cases of IMT by using immunohistochemical (IHC) staining, fluorescence in-situ hybridization, and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). IHC staining showed ALK and ROS1 to be positive in 22 of 36 (61.1%) and two of 36 (5.6%) cases, respectively. In one case with ROS1 positivity, IHC staining showed cytoplasmic and dot-like ROS1 expression, and RT-PCR showed the presence of the TFG-ROS1 fusion transcript. Two cases of pulmonary IMT, in a 7-year-old patient and a 23-year-old patient, had ETV6 rearrangement, and the presence of the ETV6-NTRK3 fusion transcript was confirmed in one case. These tumours were composed of hypocellular myxoid areas and highly cellular areas with rich plasmacytic infiltration; the histological features were different from those of infantile fibrosarcoma. RET rearrangement was not detected. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that a subset of ALK-negative IMTs have rearrangement of ROS1, ETV6 or NTRK3 as a possible oncogenic mechanism, and that the detection of these alterations may be of diagnostic value and helpful for determining promising therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) non-invasively measures the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of water, which is sensitive to the biophysical characteristics of tissue. Because anti-cancer treatment alters tumour pathophysiology, tumour ADC may be altered by treatment. In order to test this hypothesis, ADC was measured in s.c. implanted murine RIF-1 tumours before and up to 9 days after treatment with cyclophosphamide. A dose-dependent, reversible increase in tumour ADC was observed after cyclophosphamide treatment, which is consistent with an increase in the fraction of interstitial water due to treatment-induced cell death. Because tumour water ADC is increased substantially at a time when there is no change in tumour volume for a dose which produces minimal cell kill, its measurement could provide a novel means for early detection of response to anti-cancer therapy. If the changes in ADC observed in the present study are evident for commonly used anti-cancer therapies in different tumour types and specific to a therapeutic response, the approach could be broadly applicable as a response predictor since magnetic resonance imaging can be used to measure ADC in human tumours.

Abstract
Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is a variant of fibrosarcoma that was recognized as a distinct tumor entity only quite recently. We previously described a translocation, t(7;16)(q33;p11), that resulted in a fusion of the FUS and CREB3L2 (also known as BBF2H7) genes in two soft tissue tumors that fulfilled morphologic criteria for LGFMS. To delineate the spectrum of tumors that may harbor the FUS/CREB3L2 gene, we selected 45 low-grade spindle cell sarcomas for reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and/or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analyses; none of these tumors had originally been diagnosed as LGFMS. Furthermore, also included were two benign soft tissue tumors and nine high-grade sarcomas with supernumerary ring chromosomes or 7q3 rearrangement and three tumors diagnosed as LGFMS prior to the genetic analysis. Of the 59 tumors analyzed, 12 were FUS/CREB3L2-positive, all of which were diagnosed at histopathologic re-examination as being LGFMS, of both the classical subtype and the subtype with giant collagen rosettes. The breakpoints in the fusion transcripts were always in exons 6 or 7 of FUS and exon 5 of CREB3L2. The results indicated that FUS/CREB3L2 is specifically associated with LGFMS and that RT-PCR or FISH analysis may be useful for the differential diagnosis.

Abstract
A blinded, retrospective review of 83 soft-tissue masses (49 benign and 34 malignant) was performed to evaluate the ability to distinguish benign from malignant soft-tissue masses with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The correct histologic diagnosis was reached in 31% of cases by one reader and in 16% of cases by the second reader. Mean sensitivity was 50% for benign masses and 80% for malignant masses. The majority of both benign and malignant masses had inhomogeneous signal intensity and at least partially irregular borders. Malignant masses uncommonly had smooth borders and homogeneous signal intensity. MR imaging can be used to evaluate the extent of soft-tissue masses, but most masses will require biopsy to determine if they are benign or malignant.

Abstract
A review of over 400 primary bone tumors yielded 11 lesions with features allowing classification as malignant fibrous histiocytoma on a purely histological basis. Correlation with roentgenograms and clinical data indicated that these tumors occurred as osteolytic lesions associated with a high incidence of pathologic fractures in the metaphyses of skeletally mature long bones. Nine patients developed pulmonary metastases and 3 developed lymph node metastases within 21 months following diagnosis. The average survival was 12 months in 6 of the 9 patients who had no secondary treatment in their metastases. Treatment of 3 patients with metastatic lesions with chemotherapy or radiotherapy has been clinically encouraging. Some evidence was obtained that either or both the histiocytic and fibroblastic component may metastasize. There is a need for biopsy of metastatic lesions and autopsy followup to more accurately assess the mode of spread and histologic type of the metastases.

Abstract
Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a not uncommon low-grade cutaneous sarcoma of uncertain histogenesis, which typically arises in early to middle adult life. Traditionally, it is regarded as extremely uncommon in infants and children, and this diagnosis may therefore easily be overlooked in young patients. Eight such cases (representing 5.9% of the available DFSPs on file) are presented of which two were congenital. Age range at presentation was 14 months to 12 years. Five arose on the trunk. Most had originally been mistaken for unclassified sarcoma, a fibromatosis, or diffuse neurofibroma. The histologic features were entirely comparable to the more usual adult cases except that all had a plaque-like, rather than nodular, growth pattern. Short-term follow up has revealed no recurrences. DFSP is not so rare in childhood and warrants wider recognition in order to ensure appropriate treatment.

Abstract
Infantile fibrosarcoma and congenital mesoblastic nephroma are tumors of infancy traditionally associated with the ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion. However, a number of case reports have identified variant fusions in these tumors. In order to assess the frequency of variant NTRK3 fusions, and in particular whether the recently identified EML4-NTRK3 fusion is recurrent, 63 archival cases of infantile fibrosarcoma, congenital mesoblastic nephroma, mammary analog secretory carcinoma and secretory breast carcinoma (tumor types that are known to carry recurrent ETV6-NTRK3 fusions) were tested with NTRK3 break-apart FISH, EML4-NTRK3 dual fusion FISH, and targeted RNA sequencing. The EML4-NTRK3 fusion was identified in two cases of infantile fibrosarcoma (one of which was previously described), and in one case of congenital mesoblastic nephroma, demonstrating that the EML4-NTRK3 fusion is a recurrent genetic event in these related tumors. The growing spectrum of gene fusions associated with infantile fibrosarcoma and congenital mesoblastic nephroma along with the recent availability of targeted therapies directed toward inhibition of NTRK signaling argue for alternate testing strategies beyond ETV6 break-apart FISH. The use of either NTRK3 FISH or next-generation sequencing will expand the number of cases in which an oncogenic fusion is identified and facilitate optimal diagnosis and treatment for patients.

Abstract
Thirty-two primary desmoid tumors occurred in 29 patients. The median patient age was 32 years, and 55% of the patients were females. An antecedent history of trauma at the tumor site was elicited from 28% of patients. Thirty-one of 32 primary tumors were completely excised at initial presentation. Five tumors were treated with adjuvant radiotherapy. The overall recurrence rate for primary and recurrent lesions was 60%. The recurrence rate in children (88%) was more than twice that found in adults (38%). A single recurrence did not significantly increase the likelihood of a subsequent recurrence. Greater than 90% of all recurrences took place within 3 years of treatment. The rate of recurrence was not clearly influenced by the status of histologic margins, although this was examined in less than half the tumors. Desmoid tumors are aggressive neoplasms that exhibit a strong propensity for local recurrence. They should be treated as low-grade malignancies with documentation of histologic margins and close clinical follow-up within the framework of a tumor registry.

Abstract
We analyzed the results of treatment in 89 cases of desmoid tumor (DT) with a follow-up period of 9.3 +/- 5.9 years. After surgical removal, the frequency of recurrence was equal, regardless of whether a complete removal of the tumor was obtained or not. After combined operation and radiotherapy, recurrence was higher. A higher frequency of recurrences was observed in extraabdominal (45%) v abdominal (10%) DTs. Recurrence was particularly high in the juvenile variety (70%), and low in the DTs of fertile women (11%). If a recurrence followed the first operation, multiple recurrences were the rule. Spontaneous regression was observed in 4% of the cases. The results emphasize that the basic biologic characteristics of this rare neoplasm have a greater impact on the results than the operation itself. A simple excision at the primary operation is recommended.

Abstract
When dermatofibromas are composed predominantly of fibroblasts and extend into the subcutaneous tissue, it may be difficult to distinguish them from dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. Because the patterns of extension of dermatofibroma have not been well characterized, we studied 185 cases of the fibrous variant of dermatofibroma with extension into the subcutaneous tissue and 40 cases of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. Dermatofibromas had two main patterns of extension into subcutaneous tissue. One pattern, seen in 133 of 185 cases (72%), consisted of irregular extension into the subcutaneous tissue in a vertical or radial fashion, predominantly along the septa, which appeared wedge-shaped. The other pattern, seen in 52 of 185 cases (28%), showed a smooth and well-demarcated deep margin that bulged into the subcutaneous tissue. Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans also had two main patterns of extension into the subcutaneous tissue. In one pattern, seen in 12 of 40 cases (30%), slender spindle-shaped cells extended along septa and between fat cells in a classic honeycomb or lacelike pattern. The other pattern observed in 24 of 40 cases (60%) exhibited a distinct multilayered pattern in which the bundles of slender spindle-shaped cells showed a predominantly parallel orientation to the skin surface. In four cases (10%), a mixture of both patterns was present. We conclude that the patterns of extension of dermatofibroma into the subcutaneous tissue are different from the patterns of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans.

Abstract
Sixty-three cases of collagenous fibroma (desmoplastic fibroblastoma) from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology were analyzed. These tumors occurred mostly in men (80%) with a median age of 50 years (range, 16 to 81 years). The lesions had a wide anatomic distribution and involved the arm (24%), shoulder girdle (19%), posterior neck or upper back (14%), feet or ankles (14%), leg (14%), hand (8%), and abdominal wall and hip (6%). The patients typically presented with a history of a painless, slowly growing mass, often of relatively long duration. The tumors ranged in size from 1 to 20 cm (median, 3.0 cm). The lesions were predominantly subcutaneous, but fascial involvement was common, and 27% of cases involved skeletal muscle. Gross examination typically showed an elongated, lobulated, or disc-shaped mass with a firm consistency and a homogeneous pearl-gray color. Histologically, the tumors often appeared well marginated on low-power examination, but most (78%) infiltrated fat or, less commonly, skeletal muscle. The lesional cells were relatively bland stellate and spindle-shaped fibroblasts separated by a collagenous or myxocollagenous matrix. Mitotic activity was absent or minimal. Some of the lesional cells had a myofibroblastic immunophenotype, as evidenced by focal reactivity for muscle-specific and alpha-smooth muscle actins. In a few cases, rare actin-positive cells were also positive for keratins. Desmin, S100 protein, and CD34 were not expressed. None of the 39 patients with follow-up (median, 11 years) developed a recurrence. Collagenous fibroma is a benign fibroblastic/myofibroblastic proliferation. The large size of some of these tumors coupled with slow growth and persistence favors a neoplastic process over a peculiar reactive proliferation. The differential diagnosis includes a variety of reactive and neoplastic fibroblastic lesions, most importantly fibromatosis and low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma. Simple, conservative excision is the treatment of choice for collagenous fibroma.

Abstract
T2*-weighted gradient-echo magnetic resonance imaging (T2*-weighted GRE MRI) was used to investigate spontaneous fluctuations in tumour vasculature non-invasively. FSa fibrosarcomas, implanted intramuscularly (i.m.) in the legs of mice, were imaged at 4.7 T, over a 30 min or 1 h sampling period. On a voxel-by-voxel basis, time courses of signal intensity were analysed using a power spectrum density (PSD) analysis to isolate voxels for which signal changes did not originate from Gaussian white noise or linear drift. Under baseline conditions, the tumours exhibited spontaneous signal fluctuations showing spatial and temporal heterogeneity over the tumour. Statistically significant fluctuations occurred at frequencies ranging from 1 cycle/3 min to 1 cycle/h. The fluctuations were independent of the scanner instabilities. Two categories of signal fluctuations were reported: (i) true fluctuations (TFV), i.e., sequential signal increase and decrease, and (ii) profound drop in signal intensity with no apparent signal recovery (SDV). No temporal correlation between tumour and contralateral muscle fluctuations was observed. Furthermore, treatments aimed at decreasing perfusion-limited hypoxia, such as carbogen combined with nicotinamide and flunarizine, decreased the incidence of tumour T2*-weighted GRE fluctuations. We also tracked dynamic changes in T2* using multiple GRE imaging. Fluctuations of T2* were observed; however, fluctuation maps using PSD analysis could not be generated reliably. An echo-time dependency of the signal fluctuations was observed, which is typical to physiological noise. Finally, at the end of T2*-weighted GRE MRI acquisition, a dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI was performed to characterize the microenvironment in which tumour signal fluctuations occurred in terms of vessel functionality, vascularity and microvascular permeability. Our data showed that TFV were predominantly located in regions with functional vessels, whereas SDV occurred in regions with no contrast enhancement as the result of vessel functional impairment. Furthermore, transient fluctuations appeared to occur preferentially in neoangiogenic hyperpermeable vessels. The present study suggests that spontaneous T2*-weighted GRE fluctuations are very likely to be related to the spontaneous fluctuations in blood flow and oxygenation associated with the pathophysiology of acute hypoxia in tumours. The disadvantage of the T2*-weighted GRE MRI technique is the complexity of signal interpretation with regard to pO2 changes. Compared to established techniques such as intravital microscopy or histological assessments, the major advantage of the MRI technique lies in its capacity to provide simultaneously both temporal and detailed spatial information on spontaneous fluctuations throughout the tumour.
