Abstract
Extremely fast fluorescence labeling (<1 min) of a recombinant alkene-encoded protein in living Escherichia coli cells was observed with tetrazole 1. The electron-donating methoxy substituent raises the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital of the nitrile-imine intermediate derived from 1. This strategy greatly accelerates the functionalization of alkenes by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition in living systems.

Abstract
We examine the use of external standards for quantitative measurement by 1H NMR of solution concentrations of natural products and other low molecular weight, hydrogen-containing compounds and show that precision and accuracy ca. 1% is obtainable with a commercial 11.7 T spectrometer when standards and analytes are contained in separate but identical sealed precision glass NMR tubes. Numerous factors contributing to the intensity of the NMR signals are evaluated. Precise measurements of 360 degrees pulse lengths for each sample provide direct corrections for variations in probe Q-factor that enable samples in different solvents to be compared, provided single-coil excitation and detection is used throughout. Samples need not be prepared in deuterated solvents if the 1H spectra of the solvents are simple enough for peak suppression by presaturation. The approach is particularly suitable for hazardous materials kept in sealed tubes and for the preparation of certified calibration solution reference materials for use with LC-MS and other techniques where deuterated solvents should be avoided.

Abstract
Thirteen novel (E)-alpha-(methoxyimino)benzeneacetate derivatives, the analogues of strobilurins, which contain two pharmacophoric substructures of the methyl (E)-methoxyiminoacetate moiety and 1,3,5-substituted pyrazole ring, were stereoselectively synthesized. It was found that the coupling reaction could give stereoselectively (E:Z ca. 14:1) the key intermediate material (E)-methyl 2-(hydroxyimino)-2-o-tolyl acetate (2). An X-ray crystallographic structure determination was carried out in a representative product. The preliminary bioassays indicated that all of the compounds 1 showed potent fungicidal activity against Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinereapers, Gibberella zeae, Physalospora piricola, and Bipolaris mayclis.

Abstract
The therapeutic benefits of the antidepressant nefazodone have been hampered by several cases of acute hepatotoxicity/liver failure. Although the mechanism of hepatotoxicity remains unknown, it is possible that reactive metabolites of nefazodone play a causative role. Studies were initiated to determine whether nefazodone undergoes bioactivation in human liver microsomes to electrophilic intermediates. Following incubation of nefazodone with microsomes or recombinant P4503A4 in the presence of sulfydryl nucleophiles, conjugates derived from the addition of thiol to a monohydroxylated nefazodone metabolite were observed. Product ion spectra suggested that hydroxylation and sulfydryl conjugation occurred on the 3-chlorophenylpiperazine-ring, consistent with a bioactivation pathway involving initial formation of p-hydroxynefazodone, followed by its two-electron oxidation to the reactive quinone-imine intermediate. The formation of novel N-dearylated nefazodone metabolites was also discernible in these incubations, and 2-chloro-1,4-benzoquinone, a by-product of N-dearylation, was trapped with glutathione to afford the corresponding hydroquinone-sulfydryl adduct. Nefazodone also displayed NADPH-, time-, and concentration-dependent inactivation of P4503A4 activity, suggesting that reactive metabolites derived from nefazodone bioactivation are capable of covalently modifying P4503A4. A causative role for 2-chloro-1,4-benzoquinone and/or the quinone-imine intermediate(s) in nefazodone hepatotoxicity is speculated. Although the antianxiety agent buspirone, which contains a pyrimidine ring in place of the 3-chlorophenyl-ring, also generated p-hydroxybuspirone in liver microsomes, no sulfydryl conjugates of this metabolite were observed. This finding is consistent with the proposal that two-electron oxidation of p-hydroxybuspirone to the corresponding quinone-imine is less favorable due to differences in the protonation state at physiological pH and due to weaker resonance stabilization of the oxidation products as predicted from ab initio measurements.

Abstract
Secondary and tertiary alicyclic amines are widely found in pharmaceuticals and environmental compounds. The formation of iminium ions as reactive intermediates in the metabolic activation of alicyclic amines has previously been investigated in radiometric assays where radiolabeled cyanide is typically employed. In this paper, we report a relatively high throughput LC-MS/MS method for the detection of the nonradiolabeled cyanide adduct formed in rat or human liver microsomal incubations via constant neutral loss scan followed by structural characterization using product ion scan on a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. A total of 14 alicyclic amine compounds were investigated with the cyanide trapping LC-MS/MS screen and also with the glutathione (GSH) trapping screen, a well-established and commonly employed technique for reactive metabolite screening. Our results are found to be in general agreement with the previous metabolism reports for these compounds, demonstrating the effectiveness, speed, and simplicity of the cyanide trapping LC-MS/MS method to study the iminium ion intermediates from alicyclic amines and its complementarities to GSH trapping method for reactive metabolite screenings.

Abstract
Cyclic imines are lipophilic marine toxins that bioaccumulate in seafood. Their structure comprises a cyclic-imino moiety, responsible for acute neurotoxicity in mice. Cyclic imines have not been linked yet to human poisonings and are not regulated in Europe, although the European Food Safety Authority requires more data to perform a conclusive risk assessment for consumers. This work presents the first detection of pinnatoxin G (PnTX-G) in Spain and 13-desmethyl spirolide C (SPX-1) in shellfish from Catalonia (Spain, NW Mediterranean Sea). Cyclic imines were found at low concentrations (2 to 60 µg/kg) in 13 samples of mussels and oysters (22 samples analyzed). Pinnatoxin G has been also detected in 17 seawater samples (out of 34) using solid phase adsorption toxin tracking devices (0.3 to 0.9 µg/kg-resin). Pinnatoxin G and SPX-1 were confirmed with both low and high resolution (<2 ppm) mass spectrometry by comparison of the response with that from reference standards. For other analogs without reference standards, we applied a strategy combining low resolution MS with a triple quadrupole mass analyzer for a fast and reliable screening, and high resolution MS LTQ Orbitrap® for unambiguous confirmation. The advantages and limitations of using high resolution MS without reference standards were discussed.

Abstract
Trifloxystrobin, fenhexamid and famoxadone belong to the generation of fungicides acting against a broad spectrum of fungi and widely used in Integrated Pest Management strategies in different agricultural crops but mainly in viticulture. In the present work, a gas chromatographic (GC) method for their determination was developed and validated on tomato, grape and wine matrices. The method was based on a simple one step liquid-liquid microextraction with cyclohexane/dichloromethane (9+1, v/v) and determination of fungicides by gas chromatography with nitrogen phosphorous (NP-) and electron capture (EC-) detection, and ion trap mass spectrometry (ITMS) for confirmation. The method was validated by recovery experiments, assessment of matrix effect and calculation of the associated uncertainty. Recoveries for GC-NPD and GC-ECD were found in the range of 81-102% with RSD <12%, while matrix-matched calibration solutions were imposed for quantification. LOQs ranged from 0.005 to 0.05 mg/kg and 0.01 to 0.10 mg/kg for the GC-ECD and GC-NPD, respectively, depending on the sensitivity of each compound with trifloxystrobin being the most sensitive. The expanded uncertainty, calculated for a sample concentration of 0.10 mg/kg, ranged from 4.8 to 13% for the GC-ECD and from 5.4 to 29% for the GC-NPD. The concentration levels for famoxadone residues found in tomato and grape samples from field experiments were clearly below the EU established MRL values, thus causing no problems in terms of food safety.

Abstract
UV resonance Raman spectroscopy was used to detect and estimate the frequency of the unfavored imino tautomer of the transition mutagen 5-hydroxy-2'-deoxycytidine (HO5dCyt) in its anionic form. In DNA, this 2'-deoxycytidine analog arises from the oxidation of 2'-deoxycytidine and induces C --> T transitions with 10(2) greater frequency than such spontaneous transitions. An imino tautomer marker carbonyl band (approximately 1650 cm-1) is enhanced at approximately 65 degrees C against an otherwise stable spectrum of bands associated with the favored amino tautomer. This band is similarly present in the UV resonance Raman spectra of the imino cytidine analogs N3-methylcytidine at high pH and N4-methoxy-2'-deoxycytidine at pH 7 and displays features attributable to the imino form of C residues and their derivatives. The fact that the imino tautomer of HO5dCyt occurs at a frequency consistent with its high mutagenic enhancement lends strong support to the hypothesis that unfavored base tautomers play important roles in the mispair intermediates of replication leading to substitution mutations.

Abstract
In this paper we describe an analytical method for the determination of p-phenylenediamine (PPDA) in hair dyes. In the adopted methodology the analyte is transformed into the corresponding imine derivative by treatment with benzaldehyde, and then analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) combined to mass spectrometry (MS), operating in SIM conditions. The direct and simultaneous chemical derivatization of the two amino functions of the analyte with benzaldehyde enhances the instrumental responses enabling the use of a sensitive and accurate method. Concentrations of PPDA in a set of commercial hair coloring creams are determined making use of N-benzylidene-4-methylbenzene-amine as a very stable internal standard which is easily prepared by condensation of 4-methylbenzene-amine with benzaldehyde. The regression calibration curves for PPDA in hair dyes are linear within 0.1 +/- 25 mg/ml with 0.99 as a typical correlation coefficient.

Abstract
Lipophilic marine toxins in shellfish pose significant threats to the health of seafood consumers. To assess the contamination status of shellfish by lipophilic marine toxins in the Bohai Sea, nine species of shellfish periodically collected from five representative aquaculture zones throughout a year were analyzed with a method of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Lipophilic marine toxins, including okadaic acid (OA), dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX1), pectenotoxin-2 (PTX2), yessotoxin (YTX), homo-yessotoxin (homo-YTX), azaspiracids (AZA2 and AZA3), gymnodimine (GYM), and 13-desmethyl spirolide C (13-DesMe-C), were detected in more than 95 percent of the shellfish samples. Toxins PTX2, YTX, 13-DesMe-C and GYM were predominant components detected in shellfish samples. Scallops, clams and mussels accumulated much higher level of lipophilic marine toxins compared to oysters. Toxin content in shellfish samples collected from different sampling locations showed site-specific seasonal variation patterns. High level of toxins was found during the stages from December to February and June to July in Hangu, while from March to April and August to September in Laishan. Some toxic algae, including Dinophysis acuminata, D. fortii, Prorocentrum lima, Gonyaulax spinifera and Lingulodinium polyedrum, were identified as potential origins of lipophilic marine toxins in the Bohai Sea. The results will offer a sound basis for monitoring marine toxins and protecting the health of seafood consumers.

Abstract
The Quinone outside Inhibitors (QoI) are one of the most important and recent fungicide groups used in viticulture and also allowed by Integrated Pest Management. Azoxystrobin, kresoxim-methyl and trifloxystrobin are the main active ingredients for treating downy and powdery mildews that can be present in grapes and wines. In this paper, a method is reported for the analysis of these three QoI-fungicides in grapes and wine. After liquid-liquid extraction and a clean-up on commercial silica cartridges, analysis was by isocratic HPLC with diode array detection (DAD) with a run time of 13 min. Confirmation was by solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME), followed by GC/MS determination. The main validation parameters for the three compounds in grapes and wine were a limit of detection up to 0.073 mg kg(-1), a precision not exceeding 10.0% and an average recovery of 93% +/- 38.

Abstract
The occurrence and seasonal variations of marine algal toxins in phytoplankton and oyster samples in Daya Bay (DYB), South China Sea were investigated. Two Dinophysis species, namely, D. caudata and D. acuminata complex, were identified as Okadaic acid (OA)/pectenotoxin (PTX) related species. Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis demonstrated that 2.04-14.47 pg PTX2 per cell was the predominant toxin in single-cell isolates of D. caudata. D. acuminata was not subjected to toxin analysis. The occurrence of OAs in phytoplankton concentrates of net-haul sample coincided with the presence of D. accuminata complex, suggesting that this species is most likely an OA producer in this sea area. OA, dinophysistoxins-1 (DTX1), PTX2, PTX2sa, gymnodimine (GYM), homoyessotoxin (homoYTX), and domoic acid (DA) demonstrated positive results in net haul samples. To our best knowledge, this paper is the first to report the detection of GYM, DA, and homoYTX in phytoplankton samples in Chinese coastal waters. Among the algal toxins, GYM demonstrated the highest frequency of positive detections in phytoplankton concentrates (13/17). Five compounds of algal toxins, including OA, DTX1, PTX2, PTX2sa, and GYM, were detected in oyster samples. DA and homoYTX were not detected in oysters despite of positive detections for both in the phytoplankton concentrates. However, neither the presence nor absence of DA in oysters can be determined because extraction conditions with 100% methanol used to isolate toxins from oysters (recommended by the EU-Harmonised Standard Operating Procedure, 2015) would likely be unsuitable for this water-soluble toxin. In addition, transformation of DA during the digestion process of oysters may also be involved in the negative detections of this toxin. GYM exhibited the highest frequency of positive results in oysters (14/17). OAs were only detected in the hydrolyzed oyster samples. The detection rates of PTX and PTX2sa in oysters were lower than those in the net haul samples.

Abstract
The investigation of a MALDI triple quadrupole instrument for the analysis of spirolide toxins in phytoplankton samples is described in this study. A high-frequency (kHz) laser was employed for MALDI, generating a semicontinuous ion beam, thus taking advantage of the high duty cycle obtained in sensitive triple quadrupole MRM experiments. Initially, several experimental parameters such as type of organic matrix and concentration, solvent composition, and matrix-to-analyte ratio were optimized, and their impact on sensitivity and precision of the obtained ion currents for a reference spirolide, 13-desmethyl-C, was studied. In all quantitative experiments, excellent linearities in the concentration range between 0.01 and 1.75 microg/mL were obtained, with R2 values of 0.99 or higher. The average precision of the quantitative MALDI measurements was 7.4+/-2.4% RSD. No systematic errors were apparent with this method as shown by a direct comparison to an electrospray LC/MS/MS method. Most importantly, the MALDI technique was very fast; each sample spot was analyzed in less than 5 s as compared to several minutes with the electrospray assay. To demonstrate the potential of the MALDI triple quadrupole method, its application to quantitative analysis in several different phytoplankton samples was investigated, including crude extracts and samples from mass-triggered fractionation experiments. 13-Desmethyl spirolide C was successfully quantified in these complex samples at concentration levels from 0.05 to 90.4 microg/mL (prior to dilution to have samples fall within the dynamic range of the method) without extensive sample preparation steps. The versatility of the MALDI triple quadrupole method was also exhibited for the identification of unknown spirolide analogues. Through the use of dedicated linked scan functions such as precursor ion and neutral loss scans, several spirolide compounds were tentatively identified directly from the crude extract, without the usual time-consuming chromatographic preseparation steps. Moreover, high-quality CID spectra were obtained for low-abundant spirolides present in the phytoplankton samples.

Abstract
Trifloxystrobin, a strobilurin fungicide, has been widely applied to control fungal diseases in various crops, especially in rice cultivation. However, its residual profile in rice paddy that was highly linked to its ecological risk still remains poorly understood. To elucidate the fate and primary metabolism of trifloxystrobin in rice paddy, a simple and efficient analytical method was developed using the DisQuE extraction kit combined with GC-μECD and GC-EI-MS/MS analyses. As a result, methodological recoveries of trifloxystrobin fortified in paddy water, soil and rice straw ranging from 0.005 to 2 mg kg(-1) (mg L(-1) for water) were acquired from 87.6% to 109.1% with relative standard deviation (RSD) from 1.9% to 9.5% (n=5), and the limit of detection (LOD, signal to noise (S/N)=3) and the limit of quantification (LOQ, S/N=10) were 6.3×10(-4) mg L(-1) and 2.09×10(-3) mg L(-1), respectively, which indicates the favorable accuracy, precision and sensitivity of the method for effective monitoring of the trace amounts of residual trifloxystrobin in the rice paddy. Furthermore, dissipation of residual trifloxystrobin was in accordance with the first-order rate equation, showing the half-lives from 0.7 to 7.5 days, illustrating that trifloxystrobin generally degraded in a rapid rate in the rice paddy. Additionally, trifloxystrobin acid identified as the primary metabolite of trifloxystrobin in the rice paddy via GC-EI-MS/MS analysis was found to be dominantly accumulated in the paddy water and maintained up to 2.41 mg L(-1) within 14 days, suggesting that long-term and frequent application of this fungicide may pose a high risk towards aquatic organisms in surrounding aqueous ecosystems through paddy drainage. Taken together, our data serve as a useful tool for monitoring residual trifloxystrobin in rice paddy ecosystem and also provide a basis for in-depth understanding of environmental behavior and ecological risk posed by this fungicide.

Abstract
To explain some of the possible origins of an odor episode which took place in a drinking water supply in the region of Paris (France), the chlorination reaction in water of phenylalanine was studied. This amino acid was chosen for first experiments because of its physical and chemical particular properties. Changes in the different byproducts formed were followed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) over a period of time. N-chlorophenylalanine (mono-N-chlorinated amino acid) and then phenylacetaldehyde were the major products formed for the lower chlorine to nitrogen molar ratios. For Cl/N molar ratios of 1 and beyond, phenylacetonitrile and N-chlorophenylacetaldimine appeared and increased with the chlorination level. N-chlorophenylacetaldimine was quantified by using its difference of stability in various organic solvents. Our attention was first directed to the monochlorinated derivative but further examination indicated that it could not be responsible for odor troubles: it dissociated before reaching the consumer's tap and it was produced at consistently low yields under conditions relevant to drinking water treatment. On the contrary, chloroaldimine appeared to be a very odorous and water-stable product: it strongly smells of swimming pool with a floral background. The odor detection threshold is about 3 microg x L(-1) and it can persist for more than one week at 18 degrees C. It is now suspected of being a source of off-flavor concerns among consumers.

Abstract
We reported previously that okadaic acid (OA) and dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX1) were responsible for diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) incidents due to consuming cultivated mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) in coastal cities near the East China Sea in May 2011. Pectenotoxin-2 (PTX2) and its seco acids were also present in these mussels. Causative species of microalgae were not identified because detailed information on the location of the contaminated shellfish was not recorded. In order to explore potential causes for these poisoning events, the lipophilic toxin profiles in picked cells of Dinophysis and in shellfish samples collected from two mariculture zones in the East China Sea were analyzed in the present study. Single-cell isolates (100 cells total for each location) of Dinophysis were collected from the aquaculture zones of Gouqi Island (Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province) and Qingchuan Bay (Ningde City, Fujian Province) in July and September 2013, respectively, for lipophilic toxin profiling. Shellfish samples collected over the course of a year from the Gouqi Island aquaculture zone and mussels (M. galloprovincialis) collected four times from the Qingchuan Bay aquaculture zone were tested for lipophilic toxins by LC-MS/MS. The Dinophysis cells isolated from both sampling sites were identified under the light microscope as Dinophysis caudata. Average quota of PTX2, the predominant toxin in D. caudata isolated from the coastal waters of Gouqi Island and Qingchuan Bay, was 0.58 and 2.8 pg/cell, respectively. Only trace amounts of OA and DTX1 were detected in D. caudata. PTX2, PTX2sa, 7-epi-PTX2sa, OA, and/or DTX1 were found in samples of mussels (M. galloprovincialis and Mytilus coruscus) collected in the Gouqi Island aquaculture zone from the end of May to the beginning of July 2013. PTX2, PTX2sa, and 7-epi-PTX2sa were also detected in oyster (Crassostrea gigas) during that period, but almost no OA and DTX1 were present. Gymnodimine (GYM) was detected in almost all mussel (M. coruscus) samples, with the highest levels occurring in winter. Trace amounts of pectenotoxins (PTXs) and OAs were also found in mussels (M. galloprovincialis) collected from Qingchuan Bay. D. caudata is suggested as an important source of PTXs in shellfish cultivated in the East China Sea. This is the first report of toxin profiles for single-cell isolates of Dinophysis in the East China Sea.

Abstract
Cyclic imines constitute a quite recently discovered group of marine biotoxins that act on neural receptors and that bioaccumulate in seafood. They are grouped together due to the imino group functioning as their common pharmacore, responsible for acute neurotoxicity in mice. Cyclic imines (CIs) have not been linked yet to human poisoning and are not regulated in the European Union (EU), although the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) requires more data to perform conclusive risk assessment for consumers. Several commercial samples of bivalves including raw and processed samples from eight countries (Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Ireland, Norway, The Netherlands and Denmark) were obtained over 2 years. Emerging cyclic imine concentrations in all the samples were analysed on a LC-3200QTRAP and LC-HRMS QExactive mass spectrometer. In shellfish, two CIs, pinnatoxin G (PnTX-G) and 13-desmethylspirolide C (SPX-1) were found at low concentrations (0.1-12µg/kg PnTX-G and 26-66µg/kg SPX-1), while gymnodimines and pteriatoxins were not detected in commercial (raw and processed) samples. In summary, SPX-1 (n: 47) and PnTX-G (n: 96) were detected in 9.4% and 4.2% of the samples, respectively, at concentrations higher than the limit of quantification (LOQ), and in 7.3% and 31.2% of the samples at concentrations lower than the LOQ (25µg/kg for SPX-1 and 3µg/kg for PnTX-G), respectively. For the detected cyclic imines, the average exposure and the 95th percentile were calculated. The results obtained indicate that it is unlikely that a potential health risk exists through the seafood diet for CIs in the EU. However, further information about CIs is necessary in order to perform a conclusive risk assessment.

Abstract
A new combinational fungicide formulation trifloxystrobin 25%+tebuconazole 50% (Nativo 75WG), introduced as a part of resistance management strategy, was studied for dissipation behaviour on apple fruits. Nativo 75WG was sprayed twice at the rate of 400 g and 800 g a.i. ha(-1) equal to trifloxystrobin application rate of 100 and 200 g a.i. ha(-1) and tebuconazole at application rate of 200 and 400 g a.i. ha(-1) at four different locations in the Northwest Himalayan region of India. The fruit samples collected at 10d interval and soil samples taken at harvest time were analyzed after second spray. The residual concentrations of trifloxystrobin, its acid metabolite CGA 321113 and tebuconazole were measured. Residues of both fungicides were determined by using gas chromatograph, Agilent 6890N having electron capture detector. The mean initial deposits of trifloxystrobin at four locations were found to be in the range of 0.333-0.387 mg kg(-1) and 0.512-0.714 mg kg(-1) at the application rate of 100 and 200 g a.i. ha(-1), and half-life were found between 19.38-24.93 d and 19.84-28.86 d at the respective doses. The Σ-trifloxystrobin and tebuconazole residues were below determination limit in 40 d apple fruits and soil samples. Initial deposits of trifloxystrobin and tebuconazole were below their Codex MRLs at the respective single doses. The half life value of the tebuconazole deposits ranged between 19.38-25.99 d and 19.84-28.86 d at the respective single and double dose. The study thus suggests 1d pre harvest interval for safe consumption of apple fruit after the application of Nativo 75 WG at single dose.

Abstract
Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) are complex to manage due to their intermittent nature and their severe impact on the economy and human health. The conditions which promote HAB have not yet been fully explained, though climate change and anthropogenic intervention are pointed as significant factors. The rise of water temperature, the opening of new sea canals and the introduction of ship ballast waters all contribute to the dispersion and establishment of toxin-producing invasive species that promote the settling of emergent toxins in the food-chain. Tetrodotoxin, ciguatoxin, palytoxin and cyclic imines are commonly reported in warm waters but have also caused poisoning incidents in temperate zones. There is evidence that monitoring for these toxins exclusively in bivalves is simplistic and underestimates the risk to public health, since new vectors have been reported for these toxins and as well for regulated toxins such as PSTs and DSTs. In order to avoid public health impacts, there is a need for adequate monitoring programs, a need for establishing appropriate legislation, and a need for optimizing effective methods of analysis. In this review, we will compile evidence concerning emergent marine toxins and provide data that may indicate the need to restructure the current monitoring programs of HAB.

Abstract
To investigate the prevalence of lipophilic marine biotoxins in shellfish from the Chinese market, we used hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to measure levels of okadaic acid (OA), azaspiracid (AZA1), pectenotoxin (PTX2), gymnodimine (GYM), and spirolide (SPX1). We collected and analyzed 291 shellfish samples from main production sites along a wide latitudinal transect along the Chinese coastline from December 2008 to December 2009. Results revealed a patchy distribution of the five toxins and highlighted the specific geographical distribution and seasonal and species variation of the putative toxigenic organisms. All five lipophilic marine biotoxins were found in shellfish samples. The highest concentrations of OA, AZA1, PTX2, GYM, and SPX1 were 37.3, 5.90, 16.4, 14.4, and 8.97 μg/kg, respectively. These values were much lower than the legislation limits for lipophilic shellfish toxins. However, the value might be significantly underestimated for the limited detection toxins. Also, these toxins were found in most coastal areas of China and were present in almost all seasons of the year. Thus, these five toxins represent a potential threat to human health. Consequently, studies should be conducted and measures should be taken to ensure the safety of the harvested product.

Abstract
The protective effect of ebselen (PZ 51), an anti-inflammatory agent, on paracetamol-induced (1 mM) cytotoxicity in hepatocytes freshly isolated from beta-naphthoflavone-pretreated rats was studied. At a concentration of 50 microM added simultaneously with paracetamol, ebselen prevented paracetamol-induced leakage of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) almost completely and lipid peroxidation (LPO) and depletion of glutathione (GSH) substantially. These protective effects were even more pronounced at 100 microM concentration of ebselen. When added to the hepatocytes 1 hr before paracetamol, 50 microM of ebselen also prevented LDH leakage, LPO and GSH depletion. Reverse addition of paracetamol and ebselen did not result in protection. Simultaneous incubation of 100 microM ebselen and paracetamol inhibited GSH conjugation of paracetamol by more than 50%, however, without any effect on glucuronidation and sulfation of paracetamol. Ebselen was shown not to react directly with paracetamol nor to inhibit cytochrome P450 activity measured as 7-ethoxycoumarin O-deethylase (ECD) activity in the hepatocytes. At mixing, synthetic ebselen selenol and synthetic N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI) were shown to form paracetamol and ebselen diselenide. No indication was found for the formation of an ebselen-paracetamol conjugate upon reacting synthetic NAPQI and synthetic ebselen selenol. Reduction of NAPQI, the reactive metabolite of paracetamol, by ebselen selenol is discussed in terms of the mechanism of cytoprotection.
