Colonic cyst in a cat presenting recurrent constipation and abdominal pain

A 5-year-old domestic short-haired spayed female cat was presented for abdominal pain and suspended defecation. Abdominal radiographs confirmed constipation; abdominal ultrasonography showed a cystic oval structure attached to the colon. The structure exhibited a well-defined wall, composed of three layers. Its content was mildly echogenic and inhomogeneous. Laparotomy was performed and complete resection of the structure, and of part of the colon, was required (end-to-end anastomosis). Histopathology confirmed the structure to be a cystic formation of the colon with some areas of mucosal metaplasia. However the question whether the cystic structure was consistent with an intestinal duplication cyst - which is the most likely type of cyst in this particular case - a Meckel's diverticulum remnant, a vitelline duct cyst or a cystic diverticulum of the colon could not be resolved. Postoperatively, no further other episode of constipation occurred.

Small intestinal strangulation caused by a mesodiverticular band and diverticulum on the mesenteric border of the small intestine in a horse

A 4-year-old Quarter horse stallion was presented for acute abdominal pain. Exploratory celiotomy revealed a mesenteric diverticulum of the jejunum and mesodiverticular band that were associated with small intestinal strangulation. Resection and anastomosis were performed. A second celiotomy was performed due to adhesions. The horse recovered completely and returned to training.

Meckel's diverticulum as a cause of colic: 2 cases with different morphological features

Persistent Meckel's diverticulum is an uncommon embryonic developmental anomaly of the distal small intestine created by a portion of the vitelline duct adjacent to intestine that remains patent. This portion can form a diverticulum (Meckel's diverticulum) or a fibrous band, called vitelloumbilical band, and can be associated with colic after local impaction or strangulation of the small intestine around the remnant. This report describes two cases of Meckel's diverticulum with different morphological features in older horses. This congenital disorder should be considered as a reason for abdominal pain, even in the older horse, and should be included in the differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain and recurrent moderate colic.

Multiple persistent vitelline duct cysts in a dog

Persistent vitelline duct remnants, with the exception of Meckel's diverticulum in pigs and horses, are rare in animals. During an ovariohysterectomy of an 8-month-old Labrador Retriever, multiple fibrous nodules with cystic centers were found attached to the ileal serosa and in a mesodiverticular band attached to the abdominal wall. Histologic and ultrastructural evaluation revealed that the cysts were composed of well-differentiated intestine with mucosa, submucosa, and muscularis layers surrounded by a thick layer of fibrous connective tissue. The morphology and arrangement of lesions were consistent with multiple persistent vitelline duct cysts, a distinct condition related to Meckel's diverticulum. This case in a dog represents a unique presentation of this congenital anomaly in domestic animals.

Congenital diverticulum of the ileum in a rat

A congenital diverticulum of the ileum (Meckel's diverticulum), approximately 10 mm long, was detected in a rat and examined histologically. The histological findings were basically the same as in the ileum. Although Meckel's diverticulum is uncommon in the rat, the present report demonstrated the possibility of discovering new cases.

Postnatal development of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues in chickens

The postnatal development of chicken mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues of the eyes, lungs, and intestines were investigated with monoclonal antibodies specific for either all leucocytes, B lymphocytes, mononuclear phagocytes, IgM, IgG, or IgA. Attention has been paid to the relation of lymphoid infiltrates with their surrounding mucosae, the segregation into B-cell and T-cell areas, development of germinal centers, and secretory immunoglobulins. Abundant secretory IgM and IgA was detected in the epithelium of the Harderian glands in the orbits, even though they lacked large leucocyte infiltrates with germinal centers. Lymphoid tissues in the mucosae of lungs and intestines developed separate B-cell and T-cell areas. The proventriculus, Meckel's diverticulum, and Peyer's patches generally contained germinal centers from 12 weeks of age on. Because chickens as young as 2 weeks old had germinal centers in bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue and cecal tonsils, these areas were probably highly stimulated by antigens. Isotype-specific monoclonal antibodies were used to detect IgM-, IgG-, and IgA-bearing follicular cells in the same germinal center.

Small intestinal strangulation caused by Meckel's diverticulum in a horse

Necropsy of a 12-year-old Quarter Horse mare revealed a blind-end segment of intestine originating from the antimesenteric border of the ileum. The blind-end segment had looped around and strangulated the ileum and 3.5 m of the jejunum.

Position of Meckel's diverticulum in broiler-type chickens

In each of three trials broiler-type chickens were used to determine whether Meckel's diverticulum resides in a constant position along the intestinal tract. Chickens were provided a basal diet ad libitum through 49 (Trials 2 and 3) or 52 days of age (Trial 1). Body weight and total intestine length as well as the lengths of the intestine from the gizzard to Meckel's diverticulum (GMD) and from Meckel's diverticulum (MD) to the cecal openings (MDC) were then recorded. When intestine length was expressed as a percentage of body weight, significant differences were noted between sexes. However, no significant differences were observed between sexes for either GMD or MDC relative to total intestinal length. Results of this study indicate that MD resides in a constant position along the length of the intestinal tract. This constancy of position supports the use of MD as a boundary point of the intestine.

Mesodiverticular bands as a cause of small intestinal strangulation and volvulus in the horse

Volvulus of the jejunum and ileum in three horses was associated with intestinal strangulation in a mesenteric rent. The rent was in the jejunal mesentery at its point of attachment with an anomaly that was classified as a mesodiverticular band. The band also was attached to the dorsolateral surface of the jejunum, thus forming one side of a triangular hernial sac that was completed on the other side by the adjacent jejunal mesentery. Incarceration of a loop of small intestine in the hernial sac preceded rupture of the jejunal mesentery and subsequent intestinal strangulation. Surgical correction was successful in two horses and involved resection of the gangrenous intestine, then jejunocecal anastomosis. The third horse was euthanatized when intestinal rupture and peritonitis were found on exploratory laparotomy. Two mesodiverticular bands attached to the distal jejunum were incidental necropsy findings in a fourth horse.
