Abstract
Some concepts of clinical and epidemiological statistics such as frequency, incidence and prevalence are illustrated, and their limits and significance determined. Two methods of actuarial type suitable to hospital casuistics are exposed, one for the study of the possible association of two morbid conditions and the other one for the determination of survival rates.

Abstract
The survival rate has been studied in a group of patients with cancer of the larynx. The expected survival (i. e. the survival that would be observed in patients of the same age exposed to the simple mortality of the general population) has been compared with the observed survival: so abolishing the source of error due to the different age composition. A total improvement of the survival with age has been noted for all the categories of patients; such improvement seems to be more relevant for older subjects.
