Parotid salivary duct stenosis following caudal maxillectomy

Parotid salivary duct dilation was diagnosed in a 9-year-old male dog. The dog had undergone caudal maxillectomy on the ipsilateral side 2-years prior to presentation. Treatment consisted of parotid salivary duct excision and superficial parotidectomy that lead to the resolution of clinical signs. Transient facial neuropraxia was observed immediately after surgery and resolved spontaneously after 2-weeks. Parotid salivary duct dilation should be considered as a chronic postoperative complication following caudal maxillectomy.

Parotid Duct Sialolithiasis in a Dog

Computed tomography was used to evaluate a 7-year-old English bulldog with a history of facial swelling and to aid in the diagnosis of parotid duct sialolithiasis. Removal of the sialolith with repair of the duct was not possible because of ductal fibrosis. Histological evaluation revealed glandular atrophy and fibrosis with lymphoplasmacytic inflammation. The parotid duct was ulcerated and fibrotic, with a mixed inflammatory infiltrate. Surgical excision of the parotid duct and salivary gland was curative.

Chronic sialolithiasis in a Trakehner mare

An 11-year-old Trakehner mare was presented with a firm moveable mass over the left maxilla. Radiography revealed a discrete opaque ovoid mass. Sialolithiasis of left parotid duct was diagnosed. The sialolith was excised by using a transoral approach and found to contain an organic nidus. The mare recovered without complications.

Parotid duct dilation in two dogs

Two cases of parotid duct dilation are described; the clinical signs on initial examination were a tubular swelling over the lateral aspect of the face with an associated intraoral submucosal distension. Surgical exploration confirmed that the distended structure was the dilated parotid duct and intraoral marsupialisation resulted in no recurrence postsurgery.

Parotid salivary duct mucocoele and sialolithiasis following parotid duct transposition

An 11-year-old, female neutered English springer spaniel presented with recurrent episodes of mucopurulent discharge from the right eye, 17 months after parotid duct transposition, culminating in the development of a swelling over the infraorbital area. A diagnosis of parotid duct obstruction with resulting rupture of the duct and sialocele was made. On exploratory surgery, three sialoliths were removed from various sites within the duct. Surgical repair of the duct restored normal saliva flow.

Transendoscopic laser treatment of guttural pouch tympanites in eight foals

Guttural pouch tympanites was diagnosed in eight foals with respiratory stridor and tympanic swelling in the parotid region. Three foals were treated by transendoscopic neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser fenestration of the median septum between the guttural pouches. One foal died of pneumonia, and the other two foals recovered completely, although the fenestration later closed in one foal. Five foals were treated by creating a salpingopharyngeal fistula using transendoscopic laser irradiation; complete resolution of the tympanites occurred. Transendoscopic laser surgery in standing foals may be a reasonable alternative to conventional surgery and general anesthesia for correction of guttural pouch tympanites.

Reconstruction of the parotid duct in a horse using an interposition polytetrafluoroethylene tube graft

A Thoroughbred gelding was referred for treatment of a parotid duct fistula. This had developed after the referring veterinarian had excised a portion of the duct, and ligated the proximal end, as a means of treating a recurring sialocoele. This report describes the successful surgical reconstruction of the excised 15 cm portion of the parotid duct using an interposition polytetrafluoroethylene tube graft.

Unilateral parotid hypersialism in a dachshund

Hypersialism as an apparently primary condition is recorded in a young miniature long-haired dachshund. The condition was unilateral and cure was effected by ligation of the parotid salivary duct.

Case report: cystic dilatation of the parotid duct of a goat

Cystic dilatation of the parotid duct of a goat was diagnosed by exploratory surgery and analysis of cyst contents. The cyst and its associated salivary gland were surgically removed. This case is compared with the more common salivary mucocele.
